Tampa Bay hospitals brace for a possible surge in patients

Elective surgeries have resumed and doctors say patients who have put off routine care are starting to show up again — all while the state sees record-breaking increases in COVID-19 infections that don’t appear to be slowing down.https://www.tampabay.com/news/healt...itals-brace-for-a-possible-surge-in-patients/

Most of those admitted in recent weeks that do have the virus have been young compared to earlier on in the pandemic. The average age among coronavirus cases in Hillsborough was 48 six weeks ago, for example. Now it’s 37.

Parkland Hospital in Dallas is opening its 4th unit to treat COVID-19 patients

More at link
DALLAS - For the first time in five days, Dallas County did not have a record number of new coronavirus cases.

But cases are still high and hospitalizations continue to rise.

Parkland Hospital is getting ready to open another unit just to treat COVID-19 patients.

The head of nursing at Parkland Hospital, Kathy Doherty, said they have been busy for months, but the last two weeks have taken things to another level.

I remember when I was a kid and did something unwise, sometimes my excuse was “So-and-so did it.” My Mom would say “If so-and-so jumped off a cliff, would you follow them? Just because other people do something, doesn’t mean you should do it.“

Sooooo...If people think the protests were dangerous, why are they using protests as a reason that it’s OK to have huge crowds at rallies or celebrating the 4th on the Mall, Mt Rushmore, etc. You can’t have it both ways. Most children outgrow that kind of whiny logic.

JMO
I am saying the press cannot have it both ways. If they are going to print headlines declaring that the protests did not spread the virus, then they cannot now warn us that a 4th of July celebration will do so. JMO

This was in Michigan when anti-lockdown measure protestors (some were even armed) stormed the US Capitol. This kind of point scoring is getting tedious, don't you think?

I actually agree. It's definitely not being a responsible person to scream into anyone's face during a pandemic. These people are not being responsible when they put others at risk by not maintaining social distance and keeping their masks on while interacting with others. Large gatherings (or super spreader events) of any kind really should be actively discouraged, especially if they are indoors. That includes 4th of July parades, party conventions and so on.

However, JMO, there's a surely a substantial difference between protesting because you want that damned haircut or don't want to be inconvenienced by face covering, and protesting against police brutality, the murder of black citizens and ongoing systemic racial injustice. Surely. Some people are fed up and don't want to be oppressed, killed or discriminated against any longer. For many it's a daily fight to be treated equally and not just gunned down for jogging in the wrong neighborhood, or carrying a toy gun, or being in your own house sleeping during a no knock raid on the wrong house.

Civil disobedience and protest has been in the fabric of the nation since it's very beginnings. If one is going to take a huge risk during a deadly pandemic at least let it be in order to stand against social and racial injustice rather than over 'needing' a manicure or a tan at the beach, or that social drink with one's mates. MOO.

Our devastating news today, was that our governor has shut down for the next 3 weeks, along with other businesses, indoor restaurant dining.
* we are currently extraordinarily fortunate that at the current time, San Diego was exempted.
I am so depressed and concerned for my fellow small business owners.
I don't yet have the numbers for how many will have to shut down, but, I'm confident to say several hundred thousands of businesses at least.

This truly is devastating.
Most self-employed people are not qualified to collect unemployment. Nor, our the insurance companies covering any of their loses from Covid-19.
For us, as a small restaurant, we pay $570.00 per month to Farmer's Insurance. I imagine many of these people do too.
Yet, no coverage for any of this.
Along with that, orders were given to do this immediately.
Restaurant foods are perishable. Our bill last week alone was $2,225.00 for foods.
90% of this food is perishable.

This is a very terrible day for more families and hard working people then I can even wrap my head around.
I am truly worried and scared.

Pfizer "new school" vaccine is showing promise, although some who got the vaccine experienced side effects. I guess a silver lining about having such high infection rates is there won't be any issues in testing the vaccines in phase 3 trials-there will be plenty of people to test them on and compare the results to placebos.

"The vaccine generated antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, and some of these antibodies were neutralizing, meaning that they appear to prevent the virus from functioning. Levels of neutralizing antibodies were 1.8 to 2.8 times the level of that in the recovered patients."
Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech shows positive results - STAT

To be fair, how many protests were there, actually , in response to the lockdown. There were two, very short ones, that got a lot of airtime. But not many overall.

And certainly nothing like the last 30 days of nationwide marches which are still going on and overwhelming our police departments and city resources.

I don't understand why some cities are having parades, rodeos, and fireworks and some cities have cancelled everything.

It doesn't have to do with Covid rate here. It seems just random and hit or miss.
Or, who is paying attention to science and doctors and who isn't.

Well, our air conditioner went out- needs to be replaced: tech came out- wore a mask at my request. Said he gets tested often because he meets with the public as part of his job and his latest test last week was negative. He was outside most of the time but came in, sat the kitchen table. I washed down the table and chair he sat on and washed my hands thoroughly. I think what i did was reasonable-- I cannot see making him use hand sanitizer and all of that.

Had a friend with lichen planis... she had a hell of a time, and had a mouthwash so I expect it was the same stuff.

So let me ask though, this is a "shocking amount" because it is different than what it was last time? It doesn't seem like an outlandish price for such a specialized use, so was wondering.. Do you think it was because of Covid?

I have an inhaler that is over $500 for 3 months... and my doc thinks mine will go up too since pulmonary docs may prescribe it pre-actively for their pulmonary patients...

I will have to search in my files to find what I paid for the drug last time. In my opinion, lots of medicine prices will be going up as a result of the pandemic.

I wonder how they choose between two 26 year old mothers ...
Probably based on whether either of them has comorbid conditions that make it less likely that treatment will be effective (i.e. if one already has compromised lungs or heart, it might be harder for them to be weaned off the ventilator than someone with umcompromised lungs/heart, so you allocate the resources you have to the one most likely to survive/recover).

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

This Field of Dreams thing is so damned stupid. It really was a huge dream of mine to go. But it is not worth risking lives. There’s no way in hell it’s actually going to happen, IMO, so it’s dumb to get people’s hopes up. This will just make for some super depressed and upset kids and adults when it gets cancelled. And if it doesn’t, then it’s going to result in some dead baseball fans, and probably some I know since this is pretty close to me.

I’m just venting. I don’t want to see anything about this on FB because then I will know which of my friends are going to risk their lives for this.

ETA - this is a good example of some of us being upset about any idiotic mass gathering, not just rallies and 4th of July celebrations. And this one is way off yet. I’m still against it.

I watched several live streams too. While many of them did wear masks, they pulled them down when they stood in front of the cops faces they were screaming their vulgarities at. One only needs to look at the pic you posted up thread to see what I mean. I'm disappointed that they weren't required to stand at least 6 feet back from cops while they screamed their fool heads off.
You mean the armed protesters who stormed capitals and screamed in the faces of LE? Yeah, that sucked.

I think some area leaders are just smarter than others. That’s what seems to be the case in my area.
