I support the stiff penalty for recklessly spreading covid and wonder if it should apply to more situations than just the border.

We are having people here copping fines at the moment.

Two guys who tried to sneak into my state from Victoria yesterday ... $1,060 fine each.
People in Victoria's locked down hot spots trying to get the address fraudulently changed on their drivers license ... I heard on TV news they were given fines, I think they said $1,000 each.

I don't think they have even tested positive for covid, they are just flouting the safety rules.

There were two key reasons back early on...
One, Healthcare professionals needed every possible mask possible...thus the massive making of home made masks.
Two, in earliest medical reports, they did not realize how airborne this coronavirus was.
We have had to learn so much along the way--so we have to be fair about some criticisms.

I remember feeling retched when I heard more patients were dying ON respirators than not... and that was because we truly did not understand the "storm", and did not understand the Ace-Inhibitors and Oxygen issues that gradually just shut down body organs...

Thank goodness the medical establishment has learned the devastating effects of ventilators and they are trying not to put patients on them unless absolutely
necessary.

Is it true that for every 1 positive test there is 10 more cases undetected?? Because when you read about 50,000 cases confirmed in just 1 day, then the real numbers are astronomical. Surely there can be no containment at this point. Or even contact tracing?? It is out of our control X

Geez ... we don't let UK people or anyone else into our country at the moment - no quarantine rights either - yet they are allowing us into the UK. (Not that we are allowed to travel outside of our country right now.)

So, I am not sure that it is a reciprocal quarantine issue.

Though I notice your link said that other countries may be added after the UK discusses things with their international partners.
Sorry I thought you were asking about Canada. Canada has reciprocal 14 day quarantine according to the FCO link I gave. Australia and NZ are on the allowed list but I don't know if it is reciprocal.

I have not heard of that stat. If no link it is considered rumour.

I wonder why Canada is not on the list. Perhaps the UK has excluded all of North America, just in case?
And, from what I can see, all of South America is not there either. (No surprise there.)

Canada made it onto the list of countries allowed into the EU.

"There are no travel bans for individuals travelling to the UK but there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine that travellers must abide by once they land in the UK."

Oops, dup @SA

You know what the worst part of this is? Knowing that we the people have the power to contain the spread, but too many people act out their defiance and stupidity- so the virus is in fact out of control and getting worse by the day- at this rate, at some point the entire country will be on a really tight lockdown--- this virus MUST BE CONTAINED because our medical system will not be able to handle it if it gets much worse. Eventually, it won't be "some states" having out of control virus, but the entire country.

Florida Has New Kid Infection Numbers For Schools To Consider

According to Florida’s DOH data released in today’s report:

26,398 Floridians between the ages of 15-24 are infected with COVID-19.

5,136 Floridians between the ages of 5-14 are infected with COVID-19.

2,571 Floridians between the ages of 0-4 are infected with COVID-19.

The state is not breaking down those numbers by county which, ironically, is making it difficult for school officials to support the DeSantis administration’s push to open schools in full. While local officials may be privy to data that isn’t easily accessible by the public, the Florida Dept. of Health is only reporting the median age of infection on a county-by county basis.

Statewide, nearly 500 children and young adults between the ages of 0 and 24 have been so sick with COVID-19 related issues that they have been hospitalized.

The largest age group of 33,909 infected are aged 25-34. 6% of those infected in the 25-34 age group have been hospitalized.

My friend's daughter mentioned that when the kids return to school in September, she will hold off sending them back till a few weeks after term begins. Wait and see what happens to the others.

I wish that they'd find a new and more accurate phrase for "shut the economy down". This phrase isn't even true. Much of the economy is continuing through tighter physical distancing. Telling everyone that they are shutting the economy down creates fear instead of co-operation. It's a last resort instead of a logical, forward thinking way to deal with CoVid.

The fastest way to get people back to work is to clean up CoVid, so why aren't they rephrasing it? "Shut Down Covid" instead of "Shut Down the Economy"!

Stop covid or save the economy? We can do both.

In the UK we have about a third (10million) of our workers furloughed if you count both direct and self employed.

HMRC coronavirus (COVID-19) statistics

32 million is our regularly employed amount. Therefore this has been a third of the workforce being unproductive. It has to affect the economy enormously.

CNN have reported them exact numbers for days! I'm not in the habit of spreading rumours. X

If you test positive and are told to stay home and quarantine - yet you go to a restaurant/bar/gathering - and you don’t tell people.
Man dies of coronavirus after posting his regrets for not social distancing

he tested positive after he went to the party: what happened was that he knew was exposed to someone with virus at a BBQ- but he decided to go to a party anyway; he developed symptoms, was tested, and died 3 days later. The bad part of course is that he knew he was exposed but went to a party anyway and i can assure you he is one of many who have done this---spreading the virus all over the place.

The algorithms are more complicated than just 1 to 10....
There is no containment right now...

The only thing we can do is to test, test, and retest. If asymtomatic people or people who want to hide low symptoms don't come forward to get tested, the doom is doomier.

America’s COVID warning system

I just love this site. You can see the % of tests positive... The higher the numbers, the greater the spread will be.

Florida has obviously been terrible, and the tests are still hard to get in many locations... infection rate is over 16% positive as of today.

The percentage positive present a telling story of where the virus is still moving.... Its not all based on heavy population...... it is an insidious little virus just continuing to move around the country...

Appear to have done the right things:
NY (1.1%) NJ (1.4%) ME (1.9%) MA (2.4) NH (2.3)

Appeare to have done the Wrong Things
GA (14%). TX (14.7%) AZ (23.8%) FL (16.8%)
CA is only 6.5%....significantly lower than the other four. But with such a high population, the actual CA numbers are really bad too.

But I am hearing from friends/relatives in some of the middle states and they are FINALLY getting creeped out too. And more and more so worried about children.
OH (5.5%) OK (6.0%) IN (4.9%)

And two bordering low population states: Go figure.....
ID (12.5%) MT (1.4%)

magical thinking- he did say he thought it would disappear soon- early on in the pandemic he said there were 15 cases and the virus "is going to go away".

Magical thinking?
Hmmm.
Now it all makes sense.

Edited to add-
And this was back in March
Math and I are not friends, but guessing the numbers are higher now
