Two Americans are facing $1,000 fines each after violating Canada's Quarantine Act upon their arrival across the border.

David Sippel, 66, and Anne Sippel, 65, of Excelsior, Minnesota, entered Canada at the Fort Frances crossing on June 24 and were instructed to self-quarantine for 14 days, Canada's Global News reported.

The Sippels were seen making stops in the town of Fort Frances, which the Ontario Provincial Police told Global News led to the charges.

The act was invoked in late March in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. It mandates self-isolation for international travelers once they arrive in the country, barring them from public spaces like transportation. Forbes reported that the act was updated in 2005 to address the SARS epidemic by imposing legal penalties on those who break quarantine, including fines and jail time.

To gain admittance to Canada US citizens have been known to state they are enroute to Alaska via driving. Of course, many are attempting to fish in Canada.

Hopefully, with no known underlying conditions, his experiences and death will be a wake-up call for non-believers and will encourage mask wearing, crowd avoidance, and social distancing.
How did he catch it? Does anyone know?

Today’s coronavirus news: Hamilton native and Broadway star Nick Cordero dies of COVID-19; NHL, players strike deal to resume; 124 new cases in Ontario, in Star’s tally

This link indicates he caught it when they went back to NY to move. I guess little was known then and initially it was thought to be pneumonia it seems. Very unlucky.

Here's a link about his fight.

Yet another covid issue .... this pandemic is really affecting so many things.

In April, citing concerns about social distancing and the respiratory danger of wildfire smoke, the U.S. Forest Service suspended a wildfire prevention method called controlled burns in several states. California, which had set aside billions to prepare for wildfires, had many projects put on hold after COVID-19’s economic fallout forced the state to make significant budget cuts.

“There’s a number of questions we don’t have a good answer to,” says Jim Whittington, an independent consultant in wildland fire response. “How well are we going to be able to tap into the national resource ordering system and get people from all over the country? Is travel going to be limited? If they’re coming from a [COVID-19] hot spot, will that be a factor?”

In past years, the U.S. has received firefighting assistance from international firefighting crews and volunteers. This year, it’s unclear whether they will be able to come to the rescue.

Weekly UK deaths and increase % from previous week. 1st May had the highest number of weekly deaths at a daily average of 1,128.
Date deaths % inc per week
1 May 7900 40
8 May 3739 14
15May 2857 9
22May 2395 7
29May 1768 5
5 Jun 2100 5.5
12Jun 1520 3.7
19Jun 974 2.3
26Jun 953 2.2
3 Jul 717 1.7

Week to Sunday we had 670 deaths, a 1.5% increase.
So UK daily average is at 95 down to 2 digits. Our peak (1st May) was more than 1,000 per day.

Let's hope the openings don't stop these reductions.
Do you have a link for that? I'd like to look at UK numbers a bit closer. Thanks!

I can't find anything definitive about how he caught the virus, so perhaps they don't know exactly how that happened ... though he is not the only Broadway personality who contracted the virus. Or died from it.

Other Broadway actors who have been infected with coronavirus include Danny Burstein, Tony Shalhoub, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Gavin Creel, Aaron Tveit and Laura Bell Bundy. The Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally died in March due to complications from the virus.

That is really, really not good. The ripples from the spread of this disease are seemingly endless. "Live with it," indeed. Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

My brother told me when they first closed all businesses in April that it was the wrong move. He said ‘when it’s your time, it’s your time’. I did not agree with that at all and still don’t. Who wants to watch a loved one suffer in ICU and if they recover have damaged lungs forever? My brother is a mean person.
My brother said something similar and has been saying it for the past three months. He let his 20 year old daughter traipse all over the state of California with her friends for the past two weeks. She came home on Thursday and started to get sick on Friday. Was tested on Saturday. Ended up at the ER yesterday morning with a fever of 105F that wouldn’t go down with anything. She was having seizures. She was perfectly healthy before this. The doctors got her fever back down to 102 and sent her home. Anyway he is now singing a very different tune. He is scared out of his mind for his daughter and laments that he let her travel. Seemed it was easy to discount the disease when it didn’t affect him personally. Not so when it’s his daughter laying in bed with her eyes rolling to the back of her head. I only pray she comes through this without any further complications and that neither he nor his wife are infected. We shall know soon.

Coronavirus: India scientists warn on 'unrealistic' vaccine aims - BBC News

Award-winning Russian doctor dies
Russian media this morning are reporting the death with coronavirus on Friday of a senior doctor who in 2014 was awarded the title Russia's Best GP.

Elena Minakova, 57, worked at the Pavlovsk district hospital in the Voronezh region in central Russia. She was also a specialist in cardiology and pulmonology, but had been treating coronavirus patients during the pandemic.

Regional governor Alexander Gusev paid tribute to Minakova, saying she had died "like a hero".

"Many people are grateful to her for helping them conquer this horrible disease," he said. "But unfortunately Elena Vasilyevna could not win her own battle with it."

There were reports in the earlier stages of the pandemic that Russia was facing shortages of PPE and that there were high infection rates among medical staff. A website memorialising healthcare workers

currently lists 555 deaths, but Russian authorities insist they have the crisis under control.

I don't see the relevance as we accept reports coming out of China. Turkey is a US ally, also part of NATO and hosts a USAF base, so they are trusted in that regard. The initial speaker in the article is the Acting Turkish WHO head also.

True. So I don't accept anything anything at face value out of China. No one I know does, either. And ditto for any authoritarian government's assertions about pandemic numbers - such as Turkey, ally or not. Dictators love to use a blend of unrealistic optimism alongside vilification of the "other". It works really well on some of the citizenry and helps puff them up in front of other countries.

Reminds me of China.

Exactly. Always question the pandemic numbers, especially when the free press is vilified.

India becomes world's third highest country for coronavirus cases as hospitals 'turn patients away'

India now has the world’s third-highest tally of coronavirus cases, overtaking Russia as its total jumped to more than 697,000.

The health ministry reported more than 23,000 new cases on Monday, down slightly from a record increase of almost 25,000 the day before but continuing a trend of adding at least 20,000 cases a day since Thursday.

It comes as India's healthcare system showed growing signs of strain from the pandemic, with a spate of incidents across the country of Covid-19 patients dying after being turned away from multiple hospitals.

That is super sad. My friends and family run the gamut from "Covid Deniers" to "Covid Psycho". Both are extreme.

I think that people need to be cautious. And I am on the fence about school attendance for children. There are no real solutions for anyone.

One of those was me! I did Australia and Iceland, too. I started my applications in early June.

Have you heard back from any of them yet? How long does it usually take?

CoVid is certainly upsetting the firefighting drill. We are expecting an exceptionally hot and dry year, so we may be facing serious fires. Normally, Canada sends firefighters to assist around the world where and when needed, and they are deployed as quickly as possible. How is that going to work with the need to also protect all firefighters from the possibility of becoming infected?

I haven't found anything that indicates Canadian firefighters won't continue to support other nations in their firefighting efforts, but it's possible that other nations will be reluctant to ask for help. Although the firefighters may be asking for help, the bureaucratic system may not allow for it.

Here is the Chief's Letter of Intent for Wildland Fire - 2020 out of Washington. It looks like they are basically saying they will wing it this summer. I comprehend that they can't publish policies without knowing what conditions lie ahead, but it still makes me feel anxious to see that there really isn't a solid plan.
