I have been listening recently, to the speeches and sermons of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. So much of what he said is (sadly) as applicable today as it was sixty years ago. I can’t help but wish the world had a leader like him right now - one with his wisdom, compassion and integrity.
Dr. King is one of my heros since I was a young girl. He was magical - imagine if we had someone like him right now that could inspire and guide us.

Fetal coronavirus infection is possible, study suggests

A small study strengthens evidence that a pregnant woman infected with the coronavirus might be able to spread it to her fetus.

Researchers from Italy said Thursday that they studied 31 women with COVID-19 who delivered babies in March and April. They found signs of the virus in several samples of umbilical cord blood, the placenta and, in one case, breast milk.

It merits more study, especially of women who are infected earlier in their pregnancies than these women.

Dr. Ashley Roman, a pregnancy specialist at NYU Langone Health, said she and colleagues also detected viral particles on the fetal side of the placenta in several of the 11 cases they examined. The new report adds evidence that in-womb transmission is possible, but it seems rare and to not cause serious problems in the infants, she said.

"The most important thing that pregnant women need to know is it's important to socially distance. It's important to wear a mask, wash their hands," Roman said. "Women don't need to be cut off from society entirely, but they should be concerned about the impact of getting COVID on their own health during pregnancy."

In the beginning of all of this, people were laughing about the baby-boom we would see. That certainly went away...

Pregnant women are feeling such anxiety and depression right now. Who wouldn't.

Some countries are recommending two year delays on getting pregnant. What a new world....

Oh, mine too! I think, if he was here with us today, the world would be a kinder and more tolerant place.

Some of the headlines mention return to school as being needed for the proper socialization of children,
But I just wonder about the fear children hold about this return.
The building is no longer safe.
Yet some of those very same people/institutions are fine with home schooling during non-pandemic times. They can't have it both ways, I don't think. jmo

Younger children may not fully understand, but I am certain there will be a fear among middle and high school students.

My son's wedding is next week. It will be outdoors in their back yard. Seating will be 6 feet apart. There will be the groom, bride, their combined 4 children, groom's parents, bride's parents, the minister and his wife (my FIL and MIL).

After the ceremony we will have a professionally made cake, hopefully the baker will wear mask and gloves. I was going to bring some finger food but couldn't think of anything safe that everyone wouldn't be handling. I thought about fresh veggies, dip, cheese and crackers all in individual containers for each person but I don't have that many containers and I don't want to shop for them. Too many unmasked shoppers in the stores.

I've decided to make ham and cheeses sandwiches wrapped in individual ziplock baggies, 2 per guest. I bought a variety of chips which will also go in individual baggies. Two 12 packs of pop will also be in the cooler. I'll wear masks and gloves while preparing and packaging everything. I'll clean all pop cans with clorox wipes before putting them in the cooler. I'm thinking maybe I should put napkins inside each baggie with food so we won't be touching all napkins in a stack.

I know it doesn't sound fancy but these are crazy times. My mama's heart feels good knowing they are focused on their love for each other and their marriage instead of a fancy wedding. I'm super excited!

Did I miss anything? Any way for Covid to sneak past my safety measures? Mom and Dad are in their 80s, I want to be super careful.

It sounds absolutely lovely @Tillicum. My husband and I were married in my mother’s back yard almost 54 years ago with just cake and punch, close family and close friends. It was perfect. You are doing the rest so carefully. It may have been suggested, but maybe have a “distancing wrangler” and maybe some cute signs posted to make sure people stay apart...excitement can mess up the best laid plans. All the best to the bride and groom. Enjoy this memorable wedding.

A family member in another state just put their child on an airplane to go visit somebody in another state. Their reasoning? Because the child was bored and needed to have some fun and get away.

Greece ready to reimpose coronavirus restrictions: Live updates

15:52 GMT - Brazilian press group files criminal complaint against Bolsonaro
The Brazilian Press Association has filed a criminal complaint to the Supreme Court against President Jair Bolsonaro after he took off his mask in a televised interview in which he announced he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Bolsonaro made his announcement on Tuesday. Brazilian broadcasters pulled journalists off the job after they were exposed to Bolsonaro in the interview, quarantining them until they test negative for the disease.

In its complaint, the press association alleged that Bolsonaro had committed at least two crimes related to putting someone's life or health at imminent risk and failing to prevent the spread of an infectious disease.

This sounds lovely. I'm sure everyone will be pleased with the sandwiches. Such wonderful memories you will make.

Wishing the best to your son and his new bride.

Maybe not in UK, but they sure can here where I live. PLENTY of capacity and it won't take much to remind people - once people know tickets are being issued, they will and have in the past modified their behavior. Unpaid fines to the state result in some consequences to people (in fact, it would be easy in California to simply link it to driver's license/ID process, as we do with many minor offenses)

OTOH, if it is a criminal matter, it does go on people's permanent records, affects their credit, etc. I would think that those places that are already doing this very successfully with a mere $50 ticket can be emulated throughout most of California.

In fact Texas is doing just this and I do believe they know what they're doing and that it will work nicely for them. We don't have statewide police (just the Highway Patrol) but each county has a Sheriff and all of the Sheriffs must follow certain state guidelines or face some difficulties with both licensing and funding.

It's actually really easy to do. Intermittent reinforcement (negative consequences) work really well. Just come watch one CHP car sit on the side of the road - you'll see the effect on speeding immediately and it will last for several miles (and then, there will be another CHP car within much of the commuter area of our SoCal freeways).

Heck, even a flashing light with a digital sign that says WE ARE WATCHING YOU SPEED works very well. People don't like tickets, they don't like getting caught. Sure, the actual antisocial/sociopathic types don't obey - and that's who end up getting tickets. We all cheer when it happens - as it does, daily.

"Mask police" don't even have to be fully uniformed police officers. They can be like parking enforcement - lowest paid cadets. And it gives those cadets a job and a future in government work (not necessarily as uniformed LE).

Thanks for the CA and TX info... I didn't know that TX did not have State police.

hmmm... lets see if DeSantis sets up such a "Mask Police".

Do you think that's why protesters are getting Covid? I'm sorry, I'm missing a comment somewhere.

That's the part that caught my eye too - although having a can of wipes atop the cooler would be a good clue. I don't know how it would work if just one person did all the reaching in, due to the fact that that person would have to get closer than 6 feet to the recipient.

I suppose it could be handled very gallantly by having one person go get the beverage of choice, put it on one end of the serving table then step away while the recipient grabbed their soda. No one is going to be fussed about such a system. I know that the 10 year old in our family would love that job (masked) and would swiftly dance away from the table, cans deposited, so that the Old People can be safe. 10 year old would also be very happy to have their own hand sanitizer station at their seat, I'm sure.
According to my sister, her Panera brings out her pick up coffee on a serving tray - she wears a mask too - and gloves - I always assume those gloves go in the trash after each coffee is poured/served - something like that may work for the party?

Sad. I saw 119 earlier, then they revised it upwards.

I wonder how many non-covids died because of lack of ICU beds and other strains on the health care system? It will probably be a couple of years before all the numbers are crunched and a cogent report issued, but I bet it's a lot. jmo

The schools are outdated in terms of "socializing children" anyway. There's absolutely no data that shows children who attend schools are "better socialized." I see no differences, personally, between the homeschooled and the public schooled except, as I said yesterday, the homeschooled kids perform consistently at a higher standard, for whatever reason. Some of it is probably self-selection.

They are very good at leading groups, being in groups, behaving in a social manner, following rules, etc. They have plenty of friends, they are normal.

Kids raised in various parts of the world do very different amounts of schooling than in the US - perhaps we should seek new models.

Probably better if we don't get all the kids and their parents sick at any rate.
