Coronavirus in Louisiana: Near-record number of cases reported with more than 2,600

The Louisiana Dept. of Health reported 2,642 more coronavirus cases, 25 more deaths and 75 more hospitalizations in its daily noon update Friday.

Friday's reported case total, according to an Advocate | Times-Picayune analysis, is one of the largest single-day case totals, excluding backlogs, on record. The record is 2,726 on April 2.

Only 12 days since the start of the pandemic have there been increases in hospitalizations of 75 or more. None of those days were more recent than April 6, the analysis shows.

Tourists shouldn’t BE GOING anywhere (not shouting at you
:))
I don’t get that side of it either.
It’s amazing we’ve survived as a species this long *eyeroll*

Tourists will not come here if the bars and beaches are closed and they have to wear masks. Similar to the mayor in the movie "Jaws" who refused to lose tourist dollars.

A document circulated throughout the federal government by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday, based on data from the previous two weeks, lists Miami-Dade as an “area of concern.”

Concerns about Miami-Dade appear in a July 9 document compiled by the CDC and distributed to other agencies in the federal government involved in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The 33-page document includes detailed charts on case counts, testing results and even the spread of malicious rumors related to the disease.

The document was provided to Yahoo News by an individual who received it as part of their professional responsibilities, and who asked for anonymity in order not to jeopardize their employment.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and its suburbs, is by far the biggest metropolitan area in Florida, with 2.7 million residents. Miami itself is the state’s second-largest city after Jacksonville, which is set to host the Republican National Convention next month. Some have questioned the wisdom of holding a large gathering in a state where the pandemic has been raging out of control.

President Trump, who last year switched his primary residence from his New York City penthouse to his Palm Beach golf resort, will be visiting South Florida today. His arrival there, for fundraising and other events, will be shadowed by a warning from Dr. Anthony Fauci of the White House coronavirus task force that Florida had “jumped over a couple of checkpoints” in reopening.

Miami is a new coronavirus hot spot, internal CDC document says

The US is in the middle of "a very serious problem," Fauci says

Following an increase in Covid-19 cases in Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order on Friday requiring a face covering to be worn in all indoor public spaces across the state, and most notably, requiring businesses to refuse service or entry to anyone not wearing a covering, the governor announced in a release.

Violating the order — which goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. local time on Monday — could carry a $500 penalty.

Businesses are required to post signs instructing customers to wear a mask, and there are exemptions for people with medical conditions and children under the age of 5, as well as for when people are eating and drinking at a restaurant.

That's not New York, and it's a story from June 23rd for another State. Bogus headline? And, no doubt, the protesters in SC weren't masked.

and the story states (bbm):

Experts have debated whether protests can add to the spread of the virus, with a study published in the National Bureau of Economic Research finding they had little effect on the recent spike in cases -- even though many were seen gathering in close proximity, with some yelling and shouting. The study did add that it was possible the protests caused an increase in the spread of COVID-19 among those who attended.

I'll take deBlasio's word over Fox News.

Wasn’t DeBlasio the one telling contact tracers not to ask if people attended protests?

Wasn’t DeBlasio the one telling contact tracers not to ask if people attended protests?

It's explained here to set this story straight (article is from June 14 and we are still talking about this!?!?!)::

The hundreds of contact tracing workers hired by the city under de Blasio’s new “test and trace” campaign have been instructed not to ask anyone who’s tested positive for COVID-19 whether they recently attended a demonstration, City Hall confirmed to THE CITY.

“No person will be asked proactively if they attended a protest,” Avery Cohen, a spokesperson for de Blasio, wrote in an emailed response to questions by THE CITY.

Instead, test-and-trace workers ask COVID-positive individuals general questions to help them “recall ‘contacts’ and individuals they may have exposed,” Cohen said. Among the initial questions: “Do you live with anyone in your home?”

Tracers then ask about “close contacts” — defined as being within six feet of another person for at least 10 minutes.

It’s up to tested individuals to volunteer whether any of those close contacts occurred during protests. “If a person wants to proactively offer that information, there is an opportunity for them to do so,” Cohen wrote.

NYC COVID-19 Contact Tracers Not Asking About George Floyd Protest Participation, Despite Fears of New Virus Wave

The three-day average percentage of New Yorkers whose COVID-19 test turned out positive has dropped dramatically, from 69% on March 31 to an all-time low of 2% as of June 8.

How are people like this sleeping at night
:(:(
I just don’t get it. I really don’t

You know, I feel the same. I don’t understand at all.
Is it ignorance? Can’t be, because there’s so.much.evidence out there proving Covid19 is deadly.
Stupidity? But he must have brains to be in the role he’s in (well, one would hope...).
I just don’t know. Some people will continue to live like there’s no virus, sticking their fingers in their ears and singing, “lalala, I can’t heeeeaaar you” right up until the moment they’re being hooked up to a ventilator.

As I read it, they absolutely did tell them not to ask if they attended a protest. How convenient.

Our numbers in NE TN have been very low compared to rest of country. However, steadily rising now. 76% increase in my county in past 7 days. Presser by mayor this afternoon, praying he mandates masks in public.
I see maybe 25% with masks when I do weekly shopping and I do that very early in morning. My little neighborhood had a large yardsale 2 weekends back, I never left my own yard but I did not see even one mask. The local NASCAR speedway is hosting the All Star race this week, on 15th, allowing 30,000 fans.

I truly feel like I live in the land of idiots

They didn't ask people in Orlando either, or any other city or state I am sure. Why the attacks on NYC all the time from a select few here, especially towards deBlasio and Cuomo, when there are other mayors and Governors that aren't even acknowledging the virus. SMH. How convenient.

Part of it is a disconnect between what people see on the news, and what they see with their own eyes. For a couple of news cycles, this week, Arizona was the absolute worst place on Earth in terms of the virus. Where this starts to break down, locally, is when people look around and don't see a surging apocalypse. We hear of people testing positive, but recovering in a day. We hear friends who actually work in health care intimate the headlines are a bit extreme. We don't hear ambulances, or get invited to funerals. I'm not trying to downplay anything, or question other people's fears or beliefs - I'm just suggesting that when one reads the news, and then looks outside, it seems like they are talking about a different place.

OT- I went in for my second Shingrex jab. (shingles vaccine) I didn't have ANY issues at all.....until.....night before last I felt some strange bumps under my skin near the injection site. There were loads of them! 8 to be exact. Then the itching started. Then they all came to the surface and guess what? I had a rare reaction of a chicken pox rash that forms around the injection site! Just like chicken pox...so the vaccine activated that virus. It only forms around the injection site if it happens. So interesting to me!! LOL...luckily I have calamine lotion.

TY for the list as a reminder what I am missing though.

My “how convenient” wasn’t directed at you. It’s convenient for DeBlasio to say there is no increase in Covid caused by protesters when he has directed contact tracers not to even ask.

I hope this testing fiasco isn’t an indication of what’s going to happen if and when there’s a vaccine: people who can’t them, due to limited supply and other issues.

I read one man decided to get in line and sleep in his car until the next day to get the test...so there's a hint for the rest of us.

That is such a shame. All that work and economic pain of lockdown all for nothing. Not to mention many of these deaths were entirely preventable.

What an epic fail.

If only there had been some kind of warning or example they could have learned from.....oh wait....
