We did drive through testing here in GA about 2 weeks ago. They never called us. We had to call and get test results at 9 days out from testing and they could only give us some of the test results. That was over a week ago and they never called us about the last test. I still would have expected faster results for the mayor of Atlanta though! But they seriously can't keep doing the tests like this. It's absurd.

Lack of preparedness (even with months of CoVid now existing), lack of planning.

I find that personnel turn-over in bureaucratic agencies (the entire top layer of leadership) is breathtaking. No one stays long in these "leadership" positions, except for the handful of people actually hired for subject matter expertise.

It's awful that you didn't get your results right away - what's the point? To alarm you after the fact?

We need rapid testing so that the right people can quarantine and others can go about their lives.

By having fewer people get CoVid.

That simple. Figure out how other places did that, then do those things.

In scientific terms, get the R0 as low as possible (well below .9) and keep lowering that number until CoVid is gone.

Florida's number is 1.23

Connecticut's number is .75

Dial up their governor and ask, I guess.
But if they already have 23% positive tests they only go away if those people die right? How else do you reduce that? Unless you test everyone and find a load of negatives to reduce the overall perentage and I cannot see that happening. They may be over 20% everywhere in the state.

Me either. I guess the mentality is if we open they will come.

Yes, they will come, and many will return home infected... :( I do wish they would reconsider opening.

Dial up their governor and ask, I guess. (Not you personally, although you could surely try - but the governor of Florida needs to reach out to some other governors and actual expertise in health at this time).
What's really stunning is that we are well aware of what those places did to contain the outbreak.

We seem to be having trouble with the "then do those things" part.

Obesity tied to more severe coronavirus illness, doctors say

Obesity can lend itself to a greater severity of illness from COVID-19, due to comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure and a weaker immune system, doctors say.

“It’s of vital importance that people control weight as a way to prevent heart disease and all the other issues, like those present before, and on top of that prevent them from getting sick from coronavirus," Dr. Bob Posner, an internal medicine doctor in Fairfax County, Va., told Fox News.

The difference could mean getting hooked up to a ventilator versus developing a cough, he said.

Abdominal visceral fat acts as a kind of activator to the cytokine storm, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, with the Jefferson Medical Center of West Virginia University, told Fox News. He explained that the inner lining of blood vessels are "very reactive" to the cytokine storm, and obesity creates a higher susceptibility of illness.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is still "knee-deep" in the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, as officials continue to announce record-breaking surges of new cases in some parts of the country. Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In that sense, Cucuzzella views the ongoing pandemic as a marathon, saying, “We have this window now where you can get your health more restored.”

“Get rid of sugar and processed carbohydrates,” Cucuzzella said, advocating for a balanced low carbohydrate approach, comprised of high-fiber carbohydrates, optimal protein and healthy fats. “Eat a diet rich in quality animal products and fresh, non-starchy vegetables and eggs.”

It's a problem for sure. I feel bad for communities who have worked so hard to get control of their infections only to get reinfected because people want to go to Disney and bring covid home with them.

That has to be frustrating.

The parents are going to feel like they're in a whirlwind. Local school authorities will have to figure out what to do each time one person has CoVid Symptoms - obviously take them (student or teacher) out of school and get them tested - but do they quarantine all who had contact (they should) until results come back? (By which time, some other kid will also have sniffles).

Oof.

Too bad we don't have testing capacity to just have a quick test for each student and teacher on the first two days of the week.

Not to mention that 22 million children in the US rely on free lunches in the schools. For half of them...that's the only food they will probably get to eat in a day. My daughter is a SPED teacher in a very poor district in VA and has had to drive to students homes with food during Covid. Heartbreaking.

WTH is up with FL? Are they purposely trying to get to the top of the most-worst list??? I do not understand what is happening.

I think those of us that are out and about have given up trying to explain. What I don't understand is looking at massive crowds everywhere that's open and thinking that every single one of those people is wrong, stupid, ignorant, selfish, uninformed, or whatever other broad brush is used to tar them. I'm sure, someday, books will be written and classes will be taught about this disconnect.

I guess I would ask "if not now, when?"

No offense taken by this US citizen. I don’t blame the Canadians at all.

It is a crime how the pandemic is being handled by US leadership and in many US states (mine included).
I’m Canadian and I’m frightened enough of this virus. My heart just breaks for my American friends on this site. It must be absolutely terrifying for you.
Yikes. I don't like quite so much self praise. I would caution those lofty comments and also point out that Canadians did a horrible job of protecting our vulnerable seniors.

It ain't over yet.

I also don’t much like like the self praise. Especially since he had to be almost dragged back from swanning around the world when Covid first broke out. I don’t think it’s over with in Canada either. I think if we aren’t super careful a huge wave could hit late summer or fall.

It will definitely be interesting to see how this all plays out. I've been following along with my various Disney groups and people are very upset about lack of park reservation availability. From what I've read, the parks are opening at 20-30% capacity. If they opened more spots I feel certain they could fill them immediately. And it's not just locals that are coming - if what I've seen in my groups is any indication, people are coming from all over.

Cast member previews were yesterday and today, annual passholder previews are tomorrow and Friday, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom re-open on Saturday, Hollywood Studios and Epcot open on July 15. Face masks are required for ages 2+.

Don't forget that the NBA teams are also arriving to Disney this week as well. Yay Orlando!

I have 2 1/2 months left on a Disneyland Annual Pass, so I'm also following what's going on. I think Disney got pretty pissed that Governor Newsom showed some restraint in issuing guidelines under which amusement parks could reopen. They figured by setting the park's Birthday of 7/17 as the opening date, it would be full speed ahead.

There's a real battle going on between those who want the CA parks to stay closed until the virus is under control here in CA, and others who either don't care, or take the attitude that it's going to be awhile before it's under control, and well....can't wait forever to hit up Disneyland.

Disneyland is very much a locals park, even though it does attract an out of town crowd too. Disney World is the opposite, very much an out of town crowd, and they rely a lot on Hotel revenue. So it's more likely that tourists will bring back the virus to their hometowns after leaving Orlando.

Houston in-person GOP Convention canceled by mayor.

The Houston Health Department's health authority, Dr. David Persse, sent a letter to Turner and the Houston First Corporation's president on Tuesday, warning that the convention is a "clear and present danger to the health and well-being of convention attendees, workers, local hotel and restaurant owners and Houstonians because of the surging pandemic."

Turner during Wednesday's city council meeting called it "a letter that as the mayor of Houston that I simply cannot ignore or overlook."

"It is not prudent, it is not wise, and it is not in the public health safety of this city, the delegates, the employees and others, for this convention -- the state Republican convention to move forward, and we will exercise the provisions of the contract to cancel this convention," Turner said of the planned gathering.

Ivy League rules out playing all sports this fall

The Ivy League has ruled out playing all sports this fall, executive director Robin Harris told ESPN on Wednesday, marking the first Division I conference to say it will not hold sports this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

No decision has been made about winter or spring sports or whether fall sports could be played in the spring of 2021.
