I think that all the protests from the beginning of June have fueled these outbreaks and there is no stopping them now. It cannot be a coincidence either that Houston is suffering from such a large outbreak, after the massive funeral gathering in June. We can only hope for these cases to be less lethal but with the uptick in hospitalisations, it's unfortunately not looking like that. I hope that all that has been learnt treating patients since March can now help these states.
Absolutely. It makes me laugh how they think this is the governments fault or something... nothing to do with the worldwide protests 3 weeks ago nah?

Im in London and most people here seem to be getting on with their lives again tbh. I’m seeing very little people wear masks compared to March/April time. We can’t put our lives on hold for a vaccine that may never even come can we?

Arizona could be the new Coronavirus capital of the world

The hardest part for those working in the hospital is that nurses are getting sick at a very high rate putting more strain on the physicians.

Dr. Mottl continued, "They are out at least a week or ten days and now they are starting to come back, but we don't know for sure if they will have long lasting immunity or if its only temporary."

Doctor Theresa Cullen of the Pima County Health Department says there were multiple factors that lead to the rise of the virus in Arizona: the state opened rapidly and saw holidays like Memorial Day and Father's Day that most likely contributed.

It seems as though the virus is beginning to spiral out of control in the US. How can things like school and Disney World consider opening up? Putting kids in this position is just wrong.

Arizona, Florida and Texas have a serious problem and leaders that don’t seem to understand how bad the situation is. Missouri, Alabama and South Carolina are not as bad but seem to be following the same path. Only three states have the virus mostly under control. The rest need to pay attention and may need a bit more social distancing.

America’s COVID warning system.

In Arizona here...still a lot of people STILL with their head in the sand with this...while our governor is a worthless, no, worse than worthless leader, the people themselves...will not stop social gatherings, be it in a bar or a home party. And I for one am tired of trying to protect me and mine while they are out being reckless for all...

What would your solution be? I'm seriously interested in exactly what you would enact if the Governor put you in charge. A comprehensive plan.

Ivy League rules out playing all sports this fall

The Ivy League has ruled out playing all sports this fall, executive director Robin Harris told ESPN on Wednesday, marking the first Division I conference to say it will not hold sports this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

No decision has been made about winter or spring sports or whether fall sports could be played in the spring of 2021.
This really saddens me. I'm not saying it's a bad decision. But there's nothing I enjoy more than watching a college football game on a Saturday night with my two sons. I'm selfishly hoping for a way that some college football can be played. As my favorite and late author Robert Parker used to say "to me, it's the most important thing that doesn't matter". He was talking about the Red Sox but his sentiment was right on.

Night all. Be safe.

The US is going to need health care workers from abroad, but how that is going to work under the current administration...yeah, right...

The good news is the virus is not a disaster in every state. When New York City was overwhelmed, heath care workers from other states traveled to New York to help. I suspect we will see heath care workers from other states heading to Houston and Phoenix soon.

Over 61,000 positive cases today which is the highest the U.S. has seen since the pandemic began and I am sure it will get worse.

No, I agree that you can't put your lives on hold for a vaccine that may never even come, but you can put your lives in hold to eradicate the virus from your nation. Half measures don't work.

Did we take any steps towards controlling the outbreak today?

As some of us remember from March, any actions taken today, won't be reflected in the results for at least another 3-5 weeks.

Well, today we did learn about something which will not improve, and may actually further exacerbate, the outbreak in about 5 weeks from now. 'Cause in 5 weeks, Schools are going to be opened, with guidelines that are still under constant change and adjustment, to make them more & more lenient.

Texas doctors rank activities posing greatest risks for contracting coronavirus

The Texas Medical Association recently announced that it was withdrawing as an advertiser from the Texas Republican Party’s state convention in Houston later this month following a surge in cases in the city.

“Since we are no longer advertising at the event, we urge the party to use our $5,000 to buy masks for people who come to the convention without one.”
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner directs city to explore legal options for canceling in-person GOP convention

The gathering, set to happen July 16-18, is expected to draw roughly 6,000 attendees to the George R. Brown Convention Center as Harris County continues to be the state's biggest hot spot for the new coronavirus. Party leaders announced Tuesday that elected officials are moving their in-person speeches to videos that will be played for attendees at the convention.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a virtual City Council meeting that he has asked the city's legal department to work with the Houston First Corporation, which operates the convention center to review the contract with the state party.
Shut 'er down!

I would go back to March and stay at home directives. Masks in public. Schools closed. Bars and churches closed. No events. No state parks open. Sorry it's going to hit the economy, but it's better than millions dead. It's very obvious things opened too soon. Gotta backtrack now.

Only if every single person locked themselves away for two weeks and that will never happen. You’ve got to have everyone comply or the virus will just leak back out again. The only thing we can all try to do is keep the R down, until enough of us catch the virus and develop a kind of immunity OR we find a vaccine. That’s really our only options. We can’t hide away for what could be years! It’s just not possible. :/

You think every single person would comply? Of course they wouldn’t. What about hospital workers, grocery store workers, they can and will still be infecting people without even knowing it. And that’s not even including regular folk who just don’t follow the rules anyway.

“JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — At least 26 legislators and 10 others who work at Mississippi’s Capitol have tested positive for the coronavirus, a public health official said Wednesday, as the governor implored residents to take precautions amid a rapid rise in confirmed cases statewide.

The 174-member Legislature ended its annual session July 1, and many people in the Capitol did not wear masks or maintain distance between themselves and others during the last few weeks...”

[...]

“The number of people infected at the Capitol could actually be higher....”

COVID hits more legislators amid rapid spread in Mississippi

Agree 100%. That's the only way to save our lives and the economy (eventually). Will America lock down again though? It doesn't look like it. We will open up even more, we will kill each other by not wearing a mask, we won't be humble or kind to each other, many more Americans will die until Covid runs out of American hosts. Sad sad situation here. Tragic.

Two weeks is possible. Even a month.

Where I live, the group of "essential workers" was so large. And things had to stay open for them (daycares). Grocery stores turned into significant vectors for everyone.

It would need to be an actual "everyone stock up and stay home" (and then somehow, even more reduced numbers in grocery stores). Maybe we could have off some of the transmission by not allowing indoor grocery sales (have produce and essentials on the sidewalk? How are we to do that?)

No moving house or office, no non-essential travel and have a system to register essential travel before doing it (the way some other nations did).

I guess we'd have to close all the recreational areas again, too. Poor Madera County, after Yosemite reopened...

We also have to forego some major work vectors like fruit picking (fewer workers, more spacing = more fruit getting wasted, because it takes longer and the picking period for so many fruits is a short one...), meat packing plants should be forced to change working conditions, etc.

It can be done, though. And in some nations it was clear to everyone that it had to be done and they did it.
