The number of younger people in the ICU is of course high right now (and not just in California). A 1 night stay in the hospital, with admission through the ER cost a 29 year old I know $18,000. Was discharged home after about 30 hours, had x-rays, of course, and was on oxygen and sent home with an Rx for home oxygen, which he had to manage to find on his own.

So, here we go. With the increased number of cases, at least in SoCal, we're moving toward surge capacity (some hospitals already there).

The California side of Lake Tahoe is really taking it on the chin:

California Expands Emergency COVID-19 Treatment for Uninsured

All together this means that treatment for emergencies related to COVID-19 will be covered by Medi-Cal, whether you are in the program, in “restricted scope”, uninsured, or the treatment is not covered by your current health insurance

My patient caught Covid-19 twice. So long to herd immunity hopes.

“Wait. I can catch Covid twice?” my 50-year-old patient asked in disbelief. It was the beginning of July, and he had just tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, for a second time — three months after a previous infection.

While there’s still much we don’t understand about immunity to this new illness, a small but growing number of cases like his suggest the answer is “yes.”

Covid-19 may also be much worse the second time around. During his first infection, my patient experienced a mild cough and sore throat. His second infection, in contrast, was marked by a high fever, shortness of breath, and hypoxia, resulting in multiple trips to the hospital.

Recent reports and conversations with physician colleagues suggest my patient is not alone. Two patients in New Jersey, for instance, appear to have contracted Covid-19 a second time almost two months after fully recovering from their first infection.

It is possible, but unlikely, that my patient had a single infection that lasted three months. Some Covid-19 patients (now dubbed “long haulers”) do appear to suffer persistent infections and symptoms.

My patient, however, cleared his infection — he had two negative PCR tests after his first infection — and felt healthy for nearly six weeks.
...
Nooo I just cant even....:(

$18,000 is a whopping expense for most 29 yr olds, for a 1 night stay. Yikes.

How is that paid? Does a patient pay a deposit, and then agree to pay the balance over time? Or does someone have to pay for them at the time of admission? Or do you get the bill when you are discharged?

He got an itemized bill when he left. He is currently negotiating with them (he doesn't have insurance). The ER visit alone was about $3000 plus the tests and treatments were all add-ons, of course.

I think they'll let him make payments. And it probably won't appear on his credit record unless he ceases to do so - they may want a minimum every month. He's still at the stage where he has no energy and just can't handle more than one task per day.

To those on this thread who feel like they are living on "another planet" or in an "alternate reality".......I am right there with you.

More and more of my neighbors have stopped wearing face masks. I put on a mask the second I step out of my driveway. My neighbors are fellow senior citizens. Some are hard of hearing so they get right into your face to have a conversation. These days I am saying, "Sorry you are not wearing a mask" and walk away. Not very friendly, I admit.

Good for you, Chelly. Your action may not seem friendly, but the virus is not friendly. It is quite hateful and selfish and just wants to feed off any host it can find, as viruses do.

Your abruptness may make them think twice about wearing a mask, as it sounds as if you have always been friendly with them previously.

Some might call it 'tough love'.

I'd love for this to be true, but I honestly don't believe ordinary a/c units will function with air entering at 200 deg c (392 f).

ETA: I'm not an HVAC engineer so I could be missing a really simple explanation.

I was wondering the same. All units where I live and work are installed on a concrete pad outside the building. Air is from outside, then is cooled. Then goes through whatever filter is between the unit and the ductwork.

We do not have one, we often wish we did.

So...the filter would have to go on the outside, where the air is first brought in, zap it at a high temp (but very briefly) and then work the A/C system hard to cool it off. When it's hot here, the A/C can't usually get the temps down below 78-80° inside (at work). It's a school, where things are antiquated (although most of the buildings I work in are only about 20 years old).

There was an HVAC expert here on this thread, weeks ago - he gave some reasons why this type of thing wouldn't work without upgrading the motor or whatever it is that sucks the air and pushes it through the ducts.

By the time it's been approved for schools, it'll be 2030.

How anyone could believe the entire world orchestrated a hoax in order to influence US politics is beyond me. jmo

1. Never having left the US to see that there is a whole big world out here who have our own govts (and our own covid issues).
2. Limited vision.
3. Believing that the whole world revolves around the US (we don't).

ETA #4: Denial of the worldwide virus because it is too scary to think otherwise.

White House seeks to discredit Fauci as coronavirus surges

Many of the statements the White House criticizes Fauci for were based on the best available data at the time and were widely echoed by Trump and other officials.

The White House is seeking to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, as President Donald Trump works to marginalize him and his dire warnings about the shortcomings of the U.S. coronavirus response.

In a remarkable broadside by the Trump administration against one of its own, a White House official said Sunday that "several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things." The official gave NBC News a list of nearly a dozen past comments by Fauci that the official said had ultimately proven erroneous...

We also know this happened with some sailors. Was it the Guam group? Trying to remember...

eta / yes it was:

Suspected virus cases at RAAF base after staff visited infected Sydney pub

More than a dozen members of the Australian Defence Force are believed to be lockdown this morning after visiting a Sydney pub at the centre of a new coronavirus outbreak.

There are thought to be at least two suspected cases of COVID-19 at the Royal Australian Air Force base at Wagga Wagga, in the NSW Riverina region, but so far none have been confirmed by health authorities.

It is understood the defence force staff from the base went to the Crossroads Pub at Casula while infected people were visiting the venue.

Hey all. Hope everyone is well. I am still trying to recover from this broken ankle and it is not fun. We finally have the mask order - which is fun when it is 95 degrees outside with humidity at 95 percent!!! Anyone, the virus is spreading like crazy in my neck of the woods. Even though I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home, two of my co-workers have the virus at this time. It is scary.

Also, school is starting around August 10th, How crazy is that???

I am so far behind that I will never catch up!!!

I'm sorry that Dr Fauci seems to be coming under fire for his coronavirus advice. Like Professor Chris Whitty (England's Chief Medical Officer) he has come across as sincere, credible and solely concerned with public health.

One is clearly valued and admired by the leader they represent, while the other appears to be getting framed and shamed.

So much for providing “defense”.

Good to see you back. Take care of that ankle. I hope your friends have a quick recovery. I know masks are not great in the heat but we have to do what we have to do.

Road blocks on borders to stop spread from 'lock down' areas.

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/coronavirus-australia-live-news-schools-return-in-locked-down-melbourne-and-warnings-over-sydney-pub-outbreak/ar-BB16E6IG?ocid=msedgdhp.

Vanload of people fined for trying to enter Queensland

Six people have been fined more than $24,000 after lying on their border forms when trying to enter Queensland.

Police say the group was travelling in a minivan and told officers they'd been working in NSW for the past three weeks.

But authorities say evidence on their phones showed they'd recently been in Victoria.

Queensland's borders remain closed to Victorians after the recent surge in coronavirus cases there, while travellers from other states can enter after signing a declaration and agreeing to be tested if they develop symptoms.

Police say the group had also attempted to cross into Queensland on July 2 and were turned back.

Each person was fined $4,004 and refused entry.
