A whole lot of states are going backwards. 2 months ago, 28 states had their Rt down to <1.

Today that number is only 7 states.

Yes, Fl. Governor is downplaying the severity of the cases. He minimizes everything covid-related. His daily pressers are simply a monologue of him reading statistics and then patting himself on the back saying how the state is doing so much better than predicted.
HUH???
Today Fl. reported the deadliest day yet for Covid deaths- 134
Active cases now- 291,629
Total deaths to date- 4515
9194 new cases overnight

It's on a runaway path here and our Governor
and Federal leaders are just standing by and watching.
Our local leaders may have to close things down again, if it happens.
Florida reports 134 new coronavirus-related deaths, marking state’s deadliest day of pandemic

I watched him heckled during a press briefing by a man who shouted about how he has failed the state and caused death and “shame on you!”

Guy Fieri restaurant at Choctaw Casino closed 3 days after opening because of COVID-19 spread

—-

Guy Fieri talks food, fame and philanthropy

“But wait, there's more … Fieri co-created the Restaurant Employee Relief Fund to aid restaurant workers left jobless by the pandemic.

So far, he has helped raise nearly $24 million.

"I started sending out personal video messages to all the CEOs that had any connection to the restaurant association: Pepsi, Coke, Cargill, Keurig, Dr. Pepper, you name it," Fieri said. "I'm standing right here and I'm doing it. My wife, my kids are sitting here having dinner and they're like, 'You're really losin' it.'

"And so anyhow, the next morning we have a conference call. And they said, 'Pepsi just sent us a million bucks.' I'm not kiddin' ya, I had to pull over to the side of the road!"

So far, 40,000 restaurant employees have been given $500 grants.“

I know this guy is like car crash tv...I just can’t look away but damn he does a lot of good shizzle too...

WHO warns coronavirus crisis could worsen: Live updates

12:37 GMT - Sri Lanka shuts schools again
Just one week after Sri Lanka started easing restrictions, the government ordered the closure of schools across the nation due to a surge in new cases.

"Based on the direction of health authorities, it is decided to close schools this week," the education ministry said in a statement, adding that private colleges were also encouraged to shut their doors.

"We will review the situation next week."

Which countries will use this knowledge as they plan the next step for school children?

My hairdresser is SO good with the hygeine of her salon. Sterilises all surfaces between clients. No overlapping of clients. She is likely not making a huge profit, but her intention is to stay in business and not catch the virus. She has two little children and wants the best for them. It is a very safe and secure feeling being attended by her.

Would you be willing to pay more, knowing the extra time that is involved for each client?

I wonder if folks would pay more for restaurant meals too. Would they be satisfied with smaller plates? I've had restaurant meals served to me that were so huge they'd feed my family of six. Restaurants have to adapt or die. Is this one way they will need to adapt?

Yeah he really brought it. I knew he would. He’s actually been involved with a lot of good programs, a lot of these famous chefs are, programs like No Kid Hungry, etc.

DDD (& GGG) is actually one of my favorite shows; I watch it every day and record every episode lol...I’ve been wondering, and we’ve talked about this, what will the future of Food TV be, al though that seems like the least of our problems right now.

I was very sad to learn just now that Chef Floyd from Top Chef Masters passed away.

Top Chef Masters Winner Floyd Cardoz Passes Away After Testing Positive for Coronavirus

eta: I’ve actually been checking on certain celebrity chef’s restaurants periodically to see who has been able to stay open.

eta2: and of course every day now is like an episode of “Chopped”, as we already talked about. Pandemic Basket!

eta3: I haven’t had a morsel of restaurant food since Feb/March. Can’t wait for the day...

Very true. Beauty salons are a very risky proposition IMO. In Ontario, the City of Kingston had an outbreak tied to a nail salon. I don't think hair salons are any safer. My Covid hair is pretty horrendous but I'm not ready to go to the salon yet. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/kingston-ontatio-salon-covid19-outbreak-1.5631049

looks like this nail salon may not have been following proper precautions- nail salons
and hair salons are risky if precautions arent followed

Something is definitely wrong with the testing in some states.

some states? Could you tell me what states have optimal test/results as a whole. I live in Dallas and cars line up for six hours in 107 degree heat. Their test results don't arrive until up to two weeks later. I hear similar stories from almost every state. The exception are the very connected/rich and even then they aren't always successful.

Even though our portion sizes are ridiculous, Americans would likely start rioting all over again if you tried to reduce portion sizes.

Louisiana attorney general tests positive for coronavirus ahead of Pence visit to state

Louisiana's Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) announced Tuesday morning that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and would as a result not meet Vice President Mike Pence when he arrives in the state later in the day.

The Louisiana Advocate reported that Landry emailed employees at the state Department of Justice informing them of his diagnosis, and explained that he was self-quarantining.

"Out of an overabundance of caution with the Vice President coming to our state, I was tested for Cornavirus," he wrote, according to the Advocate. "Though experiencing no symptoms, I tested positive for COVID-19."

The vice president is scheduled to host a joint press conference with Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) as well as meet with officials from Louisiana State University (LSU) to hear about the school's plans for reopening in the fall. The school announced plans to hold some classes on-campus in the fall despite the health crisis. Capacity in classrooms and other campus buildings will be limited.

"Just landed in the Bayou State. Today I'll be visiting @LSU to discuss reopening schools as well as the State Emergency Operations Center to deliver our message to the people of Louisiana: We will make sure you have what you need when you need it to combat the Coronavirus," Pence tweeted at midday Tuesday.

NYC mayor's fund raises more than $50 million for Covid-19 emergency relief

The mayor’s fund to advance New York City has raised $54.5 million for Covid-19 emergency relief. Over 9,000 donors contributed to this fund to help frontline workers and vulnerable New Yorkers, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The funds will also assist in saving businesses, aid immigrants and support youth.

The Restaurant Revitalization Program will be part of the fund, which will support 1,000 unemployed and underemployed restaurant workers, and approximately 100 restaurants.

The city also is creating micro-grants to directly support survivors of domestic violence, adding that “the pandemic has brought new horrors for those who shelter in place with an abusive partner”, an official said.

The immigrant emergency relief fund has so far provided 13,000 households across 180 zip codes representing 41,000 New Yorkers with one time emergency financial relief.

This is wonderful. They've identified those who are vulnerable, and have a practical way to support them. At times, it feels like evil is prevailing, but this restores my confidence that good people can raise the bar of human kindness.

Speaking of "collateral damage" from COVID, I have a story to share.
Went back to work in June. It's a popular tourist attraction in Kentucky, mostly outdoor presentations.

In an effort to keep our visitors "safer" we spray down the bleacher seats after each show, using a backpack sprayer. The thing is heavy (app 30 lbs) and unwieldy.

Two weeks ago, it was my turn to do the sanitizing.

As I was finishing the final row of benches, I stepped back and tripped over something stored on the ground.

Ended up with a fractured wrist, bruised ribs and a cut/goose egg over my eye.

Here's what the headline should read: COVID causes woman to lose use of right arm for 6 weeks.

If our visitors stay well with the help of masks and social distancing guidelines, I'll feel like it was a small sacrifice! ;):(:D
Ouch! I hope you heal quickly. Sounds like something I would do. Minus the trip hazard :D

IMO people need $$, not a vacation, and they need it now, not an income tax deduction. Sorry about the travel industry, but it's suffering right along with retail. Even car sales are hurting. People need to survive, pay day to day expenses, support their children. A vacation IMO is the last thing they would think of doing, especially when expenses loom over their heads.

Yes, indeed. It's rather like the "let them eat cake" response. It's a solution that shows insensitivity to and incomprehension of the realities of life for those with financial needs.

Nothing should surprise us anymore about this evil virus--- nothing.

Yes, soooo many different possible effects...it’s more like what isn’t this virus capable of doing...

I might have been  to admit it, but now that I know someone else is a major DDD fan, I'm not :D I can watch DDD for hours when there are marathons. I've seen every episode dozens of times and never grow tired of it. Not a fan or GGG or any of his cooking shows, but GF is outstanding as host of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

I want to go to this much better place of which the admiral speaks.

Three U.S. states account for about one-fifth of the world's new coronavirus cases

About one in five new cases of coronavirus reported around the world came from just three U.S. states -- Florida, Texas and California, a new NBC News tally revealed Tuesday.

The staggering new sums emerged on the same day that Admiral Brett Giroir, the Assistant Secretary of Health, insisted on "Today" that “we’re turning the corner on the current outbreak.”

“We are all very concerned about the outbreak,” Giroir said. “About half the cases are in four states, Texas, California, Florida, and Arizona. But we are in a much different place now than we were several months ago, a much better place.”

I would be willing to pay more. I don't know if it's helpful, but we now have two kinds of workers - ones who can stay home/modify their work conditions to continue to earn but stay safe. Right now, that includes a lot of people. People who work in the courts, for example, are doing some of their work from home and rotating when they go in. Teachers are teaching from home. Bookkeepers are working from home. Logistics people. Etc. We've been watching streaming live performances and "tipping" musicians. Etsy sales of handcrafted items are up.

SO, all of us who work from home aren't spending money on gas (or for some of us, eating lunch out). We aren't spontaneously shopping retail. I know no one who is doing things like buying greeting cards.

If I thought it was safe, I'd pay more for restaurants and I'd get my nails done. We're in an upsurge in cases in my county (it's really dramatic) but as soon as that's over, I definitely would pay more - but only for truly safe conditions (I wish it was easier to discuss with business owners - but it's proving difficult - we're changing our pharmacy to online, due to issues at the small local one - and I worry that they will eventually go out of business if they don't change their practices).

BUT, the other group of people (the vast number of newly unemployed who are about to go off unemployment) are in a totally opposite situation. I think the reshaping of small businesses will reflect that. All of us will go out to eat least - for some it will be mainly fast food/cheap food. For others, wanting a restaurant experience, it will be less frequent but yes, we're willing to pay more (in fact, the first restaurant we are thinking of going to - and the one I'm recommending on TripAdvisor and to friends - is a pretty expensive restaurant that has always had outdoor dining, with amazing views, and tables spaced very far apart and of course, now, the staff are wearing masks).

There's a lot of room for business owners to blog, use social media, etc. to promote their ambiance and the measures they've taken. We need to know how businesses really operate - most of us are not willing to blindly entrust our health to a restaurant where procedures are not transparent. That would also help keep government out of having to regulate more heavily.

Banksy: New coronavirus-inspired artwork appears on Tube

Banksy has returned to the London Underground with a piece encouraging people to wear a face mask.

A video posted on his Instagram page shows a man, believed to be the enigmatic artist, disguised as a professional cleaner. He can been seen ordering passengers away as he gets to work, stenciling rats around the inside of a carriage. The artist's name is also daubed across the driver's door of a train. The work, called "If You Don't Mask, You Don't Get", features a number of rats in pandemic-inspired poses and wearing face masks. One rodent stenciled on the Circle Line train appears to be sneezing, while another is shown spraying anti-bacterial gel.
