Texas, Arizona brace for increase in coronavirus deaths with refrigerated trucks for makeshift morgue

One Texas county says the morgue is already full. Several other Texas counties including Travis and Cameron are securing refrigerated trailers in anticipation of increasing coronavirus deaths

The medical examiner’s office in Maricopa County in Arizona, home to Phoenix, said it’s moving toward acquiring coolers and staffing because it’s currently near capacity for body storage.

So, so sad. How can you even think about a body being placed in a refrigerated trailer? OMG

Totally depressed today. I will get over it, but right now it's overcast with rain. I'm reading so much negative coronavirus news. OMG. Then, had an argument with son (who was right, by the way - just difficult to handle when you thought you were helping). Son argument will disappear. Rain will abate. The virus is not stopping. Definitely need positive virus news.

Missouri and Wisconsin both set records today.

Sorry to hear you're in a bad place today, Trino.:(

The Pandemic Could Get Much, Much Worse. We Must Act Now.
A comprehensive shutdown may be required in much of the country.

By John M. Barry

Mr. Barry is the author of “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History.”

When you mix science and politics, you get politics. With the coronavirus, the United States has proved politics hasn’t worked. If we are to fully reopen both the economy and schools safely — which can be done — we have to return to science.

To understand just how bad things are in the United States and, more important, what can be done about it requires comparison. At this writing, Italy, once the poster child of coronavirus devastation and with a population twice that of Texas, has recently averaged about 200 new cases a day when Texas has had over 9,000. Germany, with a population four times that of Florida, has had fewer than 400 new cases a day. On Sunday, Florida reported over 15,300, the highest single-day total of any state.

WHY????Coronavirus Live Updates: Trump Administration Walks Back Rule That Would Have Stripped Some Foreign Student Visas
The administration orders hospitals to bypass the C.D.C. with key virus data, alarming health experts.
The Trump administration has ordered hospitals to bypass the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and, beginning on Wednesday, send all coronavirus patient information to a central database in Washington — a move that has alarmed public health experts who fear the data will be distorted for political gain.

The new instructions are contained in a little-noticed document posted this week on the Department of Health and Human Services’ website, Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports. From now on, H.H.S., and not the C.D.C., will collect daily reports about the patients that each hospital is treating, how many beds and ventilators are available, and other information vital to tracking the pandemic.

some states? Could you tell me what states have optimal test/results as a whole. I live in Dallas and cars line up for six hours in 107 degree heat. Their test results don't arrive until up to two weeks later. I hear similar stories from almost every state. The exception are the very connected/rich and even then they aren't always successful.
I did a quick search of the forum and obviously a lot comes up on the subject but Massachusetts is one state that does free tests in their Stop the Spread initiative and South Carolina has 20 mobile testing Machines. NJ and NY don't seen to have any problems and neither does Indiana or Iowa. Sweden appears to be coping and UK was sending out self tests up to 100k per day at one time. If you use the search function you can find the posts. Anyway, it doesn't seem like all states are having problems IMO.

Yeah, Indiana is good on testing. We have 200 testing sites.

It's the second story on the page.

Yes, I can't find it in the document linked. It's 13 or 15 pages. Do you know what page it's on in the document?

This is a strange situation:

Argentina is trying to solve a medical mystery after 57 sailors were infected with the coronavirus after 35 days at sea, despite the entire crew testing negative before leaving port.

The Echizen Maru fishing trawler returned to port after some of its crew began exhibiting symptoms typical of COVID-19, the health ministry for the southern Tierra del Fuego province said Monday.

According to the ministry, 57 sailors, out of 61 crew members, were diagnosed with the virus after undergoing a new test

I found the article. I'm asking where it is in the reference document that is cited in the article. Even if you remember roughly how far it is in the cited document, it will be helpful. Thanks. :)

Respectfully disagree. I think OVERALL testing in the U.S. is abysmal. No need to respond, we can agree to disagree. There is way too much important information every single day to digest which I'll choose to focus on. Thanks for taking time to do a quick search.

Below is great news! (Thanks @anneg!) They’re moving fast on these vaccines and 30,000 people are in the trial? Wow. Impressive.

Don’t despair. Get off this thread for awhile. Reading it constantly would depress anyone. Watch a comedy or an interesting show unrelated to death and illness.

I’m telling you, Trino, this too shall pass. You’re doing everything you can to try to stay safe until it does and that’s all anyone can do.

Brighter days are ahead. And we are strong enough to weather the storm until we get there!
