There is not and cannot be a national plan because it would be unconstitutional. The federal government does not have the power to mandate what states do. It's up to the governors and mayors to decide how to handle the pandemic in their respective states and cities. There are counties and cities with NO cases of Covid-19.
The federal government cannot say everyone in public must wear masks. They don't have that power.
Nor can they say businesses can only operate at a percent of their capacity---only cities and states can mandate that.
They can withhold federal funds from schools if schools don't comply with shutting down if that's what they recommend that they do, but they cannot shut down schools. Schools are also funded by city taxes and if a city decides to keep them open, the federal government cannot make them shut down. .
If people are looking for a national plan in the USA, there will never be one, because it would be unconstitutional.

I really wish more people had a basic grasp of constitutional law in the US. This is spot on. Yet we continue to hear the media spin how terrible it is we don’t have a national plan. God forbid the powers that be tried to implement a national plan either. We would hear all about how it’s unconstitutional.

Standing Ovation!!! :D

We have already heard how unconstitutional it was when the President claimed he had absolute power. The media went absolutely crazy over this, yet they are the same people claiming we need a national plan enacted by the federal government. Memories are short.

Still, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters Thursday afternoon that the "Obama-Biden plan that has been referenced was insufficient" and eventually was "superseded by a President Trump-style pandemic preparedness response plan."

"Which was much better, which was much more complete and which was a lot tougher," Trump added Thursday before heading to Pennsylvania on the Marine One helicopter.

"We were — we were given very little when we came into this administration," Trump added Thursday. "... And I think we’re going to have a vaccine by the end of the year, and I think distribution will take place almost simultaneously because we’ve geared up the military."
Right. And no one can find this response plan to which she refers. It's been two months and no one has found it yet.

I would certainly like to know what this response plan says we are supposed to be doing to manage covid.

ETA: If it's unconstitutional to have a national plan, why does the press secretary say they have one?

Today is my first time going out to have a cup of coffee since way back in very early March.
I never used to be nervous just going out for coffee. How times have changed!
People say the club is taking precautions.
I'm taking my homemade sanitising wipes with me. And a mask for if I start to feel unsafe. And will do the now usual, not touching face etc.
Literally no one is wearing a mask here, country New South Wales, Australia.
Saw only one person wearing one when I went for one of my rare ventures out last week.
Outing was to check my PO Box and pick up a click and collect from Big W, my lovely new purple fitted sheet.

We've had less than 12 cases in our town, no deaths. No cases for months now. I hope it stays like that.
The closeset death was 45km away, that lady was on one of the cruise ships and died in a Sydney hospital.
I just heard on the radio about a church, I presume it's in Sydney, where a lady tested positive. She had gone to Mass three days running.
I hope you enjoy it! Sounds like fun. Our club had to close down again because of some positive staff. All we can do is golf.

Thanks :)
Still a couple of hours away. I'm so used to turning down invitations that my first thought was to say no LOL.
Got to get over my fears, and the way the cases seem to be spreading in Sydney, I have a feeling it won't be long before everything that just opened here a couple of weeks ago will be closed down again.

I hope it was a really good cup of coffee! Glad you braved it and it all sounds v safe

I haven’t caught up but wanted to share something that shocked me - I was at Home Depot this morning picking up charcoal and tomato plants and there was a tent with a sign that said Florida Department of Health Covid testing - no notice, no news Announcing it - just there- I did not stand in line but peeked in and there were 3 inside the tent getting tested and several others in line and at the table - I have to go back and return a chainsaw as I’m not nearly as brave as our @PayrollNerd with her pole saw and if I’m alone I will do the test.

I think there are a number of Home Depot locations with testing taking place in tents in the parking lot. There’s one near me in Palm Beach County.

Grocery shopping this morning. Sign at the door stating that masks are mandatory, must cover nose, mouth and chin. It's a municipal bylaw. Two men did their shopping wearing their mask under their nose. And they were not shopping alone, when the store policy is one person per household. People can be such jerks sometimes.

We have a constitution, too.

And our states are responsible for their own decisions. Hence the closing of some states to other states. No-one told them to do that. It is their own directive.

However, what we are doing right .... all state leaders have been consulting together in National Cabinet (phone call meetings/online meetings/physical meetings when it is safe) where they plan strategy, work out their differences, and get on the same page.

This provides good cohesive leadership for us all to follow. It helps us reach a mutual goal that is good for the country.

Please remember that Australia is geographically as big as the US. People from different areas think in different ways, approach things in different ways, BUT cohesive leadership from all states are pulling the nation's approach together.

President of Iran claims country has 25 million COVID-19 infections

President of Iran claims country has 25 million COVID-19 infections

Iran's president has claimed his country has 25 million coronavirus infections, far higher than the official toll of 271,000.

President Hassan Rouhani made the claim during a televised speech, saying another 35 million Iranians are at risk of getting COVID-19.

His office says the figures are an estimate based on health ministry research.

Iran has re-imposed restrictions in the capital Tehran which bans religious and cultural functions, while also closing schools, cafes, and other public spaces.
The middle eastern nation has nearly 14,000 coronavirus deaths.

Before the latest surge here in Victoria, Australia, schools were open. When there was a case in a school, that school would close for deep cleaning, and close contacts of the infected person/s were isolated. Now in Melbourne schools are closed again for lockdown #2, except for Years 11 & 12 (final two years of high school) and specialist school students when school returns this week after holidays. As in Lockdown #1, students of essential workers can go to school, all others will be remote learning.

The biggest school cluster was at Al-Taqwa College (which remains closed), I can’t find the latest numbers but as of 4 days ago when this article was written this cluster was at 147 cases, which includes staff, students and close contacts.

As Melbourne college's COVID-19 cluster nears 150, parents question if schools should be open
I just got the plan for my son's school reopening. They are due to reopen exactly one month from today. Of course, I'm in FL and we all can see how that's going, so who knows what things will look like in a month.

Some recent developments:

BBM:
[...]

“Early data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in the spring found that infants made up less than 1% of cases nationally.

Although children are believed to be at a lower risk for the virus, infants "may be at higher risk for severe illness," the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns.“

Global report: WHO reports record daily increase of coronavirus cases

Iran’s president says an estimated 25 million people in the country could be infected with the coronavirus, way above the country’s official rate, as the World Health Organization reported a record daily increase of new cases of more 270,000.

Hassan Rouhani told a summit of the country’s coronavirus taskforce on Saturday that the health ministry estimated about 25 million Iranians might have contracted the virus and warned up to 35 million more might become infected in the months ahead.

The method by which the figure was derived was not disclosed, but the estimate gave an insight into the scale of the outbreak in the worst-hit country in the Middle East, with 270,000 confirmed cases and at least 13,979 deaths.

Thanks. I feel ours will close again after a brief time open.
I also go to U3A classes there but last term was cancelled. This term is supposed to start on July 27 but from what I've heard it doesn't sound like it will be happening. There goes my social life. But have to think of not just me, it's keeping everyone safe.

I hope you enjoy it! Sounds like fun. Our club had to close down again because of some positive staff. All we can do is golf.

Young Covid-19 survivors warn they're still suffering - CNN

“Their stories are a warning from millennials to millennials: Don't play the odds with coronavirus because this disease could permanently damage your body.“
Interesting. I was going to visit my parents 5 miles away today for the first time since March. I felt too tired to drive safely and had to bail out, hard explaining that to your mum without worrying her. Tomorrow I'll prob feel fine again. It's horrible these youngsters are going through it, I worry for my son - not aware of anything lingering with him, other than taste/smell.

This is especially interesting, because in the early days we weren’t getting much information from them, meanwhile we saw so many of their leaders and political figures dropping like flies.
