MOO not only is he NOT helping, he is making things worse than they have to be.
Yes and as I posted a few days ago I feel we are doomed in FL - I am just hoping I don’t bring it home to my at risk family- the hoops players in my way home from work have been joined by baseball players and a group of kids with coaches who are running sprints together - no one social distancing and no masks - we have a mandatory mask order in place and three clients came in without them today - I can’t win

UCSD Health looks at differences between the flu and Covid, including some of the issues w/ blood clots in Coronavirus patients:

UC San Diego Health
@UCSDHealth

While both flu & #COVID19 attack respiratory systems, the flu does not produce similar clotting. Right now, no one knows why. Dr. Robert Owens, MD, critical care specialist: COVID-19 patients w/ severe illness spend much longer in bed than flu patients.

Just an update on BC Canada. ( with previous well controlled numbers) As we had expected, with tourist season in full swing we are experiencing an upswing in Covid infections,,,many in the age 20 to 39 age group. It started in Kelowna as I had previously mentioned,,,,but we are into the third generation of that now ..those people having returned to the bc lower mainland, Vancouver island or Alberta spreading the virus.....So our report today indicates 102 new cases in BC in the past three days,,,,,the majority in the BC interior where I live, and associated with bars, restaurants, hotels, resorts and rented houseboats.
The bad news with this is that our Health Minister indicates we are now sitting on the cusp of a virtual explosion if people do not smarten up and limit their number of contacts. They don’t want to close things down again as she says this will just drive people underground leading to outbreaks they can’t identify or control. So....the month of August is going to be interesting indeed.

Also a number of days ago, an outbreak break occurred in the Nicu Unit at a Vancouver Hospital, and I believe Kelowna Hospital also has staff infections.

Another interesting tidbit from our federal news is that there are a record number of Americans requesting to immigrate to Canada. Some are apparently already here and applying for work permits and citizenship intending not to return back to the USA.

Someone ( @margarita25 ?) was asking if Dr. Campbell had commented....In this update he speaks to the US/CDC changing up the way that the disease is reported now.

He also speaks to England's counting in that they don't have a cut off date after which a patient who has tested positive dies.

He also covers a new 20 minute at home antibody test which is showing 98.8% sensitivity (misses 1.2% of actual positive cases giving a false negative) and a 98.4% specificity (give a false positive in 1.6% of cases of people who are actually negative)

“The death of a 9-month-old baby from Clay County is one of the youngest reported in the U.S. in the pandemic.

The child had no underlying health conditions and was not hospitalized. State Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm described it as an "isolated incident related to this infant's very specific situation."“

[...]

“"An infant death is devastating," said Kris Ehresmann, state infectious disease director, "and thankfully there have not been a lot of infant deaths in the country, but we want to make sure that we're understanding as much as we can about ... the changes that occurred with this infant in terms of the progression of their illness."“

[...]

BBM:
“Even so, health officials have warned that COVID-19 can pose risks to younger people, including breathing and other health complications. The state has reported pediatric cases of COVID-19 that required hospital admissions and intensive care, as well as at least 13 cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. The condition affects multiple organs and appears tied to earlier SARS-CoV-2 infections.“

[...]

“Cases among children and young adults have fueled the increase in the outbreak in the state over the past month. Total cases in Minnesota have increased 87% since June 1, but 144% among people 29 and younger in that same time period.“

(thank you @ArianeEmory , copied over to MIS-C thread)

Dang! Here we go again.

Covid-19: Experts criticise claim that remdesivir cuts death rates
Published 14 July 2020 in the British Medical Journal

Experts have criticised pharmaceutical firm Gilead Sciences after it released data suggesting that its antiviral drug remdesivir can reduce death rates for patients with covid-19. They say the research is intrinsically flawed and that the claimed benefits are overhyped and inappropriately promoted in press releases.

The California based company said intravenous remdesivir reduced mortality by 62% compared with standard treatment in the SIMPLE trial of 1132 mainly US patients. Its data showed that 7.6% of covid-19 patients treated with the drug died compared with 12.5% of control patients.

Crucially, however, the study compared treatment and non-treatment groups in different cohorts treated in different conditions. The remdesivir patients were compared with a historical group of more than 800 patients on the “standard of care” of other drugs and oxygen.

Experts were quick to dismiss the significance of the results.

Martin Landray, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Oxford and the lead research of the RECOVERY trial comparing treatments for covid-19, said, “What has been reported is an association—the results of comparing two rather different groups of patients. It’s impossible to draw any conclusions about the true effects of remdesivir on survival. For that we need robust evidence from large randomised controlled trials—and we simply don’t have that yet.”

Mainstream media were quick to report that the drug had been linked to a significant reduction in death rates. Within hours of the announcement on 10 July, Gilead’s share price rose 3%. The company has said that it will charge health systems in developed countries around £1900 (€2090; $2400) for a five day course of remdesivir.
[...]
The decision to make it available to NHS patients was prompted by a report in the New England Journal of Medicine suggesting that remdesivir shortened the time to recovery by about four days.2 However, that data also proved controversial because the trial was stopped early and provided only preliminary results. In addition, it emerged that the primary clinical outcome had been changed after patients were randomised.

On the same day the NEJM study was published, the Lancet reported randomised, double blind, placebo controlled data from Chinese medics that suggested remdesivir showed no significant benefits in speeding recovery from covid-19 or reducing mortality.3

Our PM in a presser right now:

All through this crisis we have maintained discipline, ensured that the target is clear, the actions are measured.

There is an understanding in the community that this virus will do what it wants. Our control is in how we react to that.

We have been focussed on providing practical solutions to practical problems.

Important principle is that we have been working together. Right across the country we are concerned for the people of Victoria and NSW.

We continue to calibrate our actions, we will make changes where required, we will respond to circumstances as best we can, these are complex issues.

There is no one thing that will remove us from this danger. We will always address both the virus and the economy.
We don't go through challenges with our heads looking down. We are an innovative, adaptive people. Not as a survivor, but as emerging on the other side in the best way.

30 billion dollars has been provided to support the people and their jobs. This has been effective. It has saved businesses and livelihoods. It has been the game changer for them.

We shall continue JobKeeper (monetary) support to March 2021. It will be provided where most needed, with a reduction to $600 per week for each employee (who needs to be retained, but the employer has insufficient funds to do so). But, you can also earn $300 each week and still get the JobKeeper payment.
This protects our social security system. Keeps unemployment lines down. We wont crush our social security system.

We expect to see less businesses on JobKeeper as they are making their way out of this crisis. (Personal comment, some are. Two of my clients are doing very well and their employees jobs are safe.)

At least 53 Florida hospitals are out of ICU beds

“As of Monday afternoon, 9,508 people are hospitalized in the state of Florida due to coronavirus related illness, according to data released by Florida’s Agency for Healthcare administration (ACHA).

There are now 53 hospitals in Florida without any ICU beds, according to the ACHA. That number is up from 50 this morning.

Statewide, Florida stands at 18.12% capacity for “available adult ICU hospital beds."

Earlier today, Miami-Dade County's Covid-19 dashboard showed ICU capacity in the county was at 130.20%, up from 127% on Sunday. And as of Monday, 513 Covid-19 ICU admissions were recorded. The ICU bed capacity in the county is 394, according to county data.”

Do some people have preexisting immunity to the coronavirus?

Dr. Rajkumar says immune response is more complex than just an antibody count. Studies suggest people who have not been exposed to the coronavirus have T cells that fight COVID-19. It's possible the preexisting immunity comes from exposure to other coronaviruses.

Ongoing Oxford vaccine findings .... (as per TV report)

Results show strongest protection requires a double dose.
Not sure how long the antibodies produced remain in the body.

Crosspost from the Coronavirus testing thread:
Had my test this morning. The doctor's office was super crowded (well, the parking lot was, lol). Results took longer than 15 minutes, more like an hour. They told us to go home and wait for a call. We both tested NEGATIVE! :D:D

All of my co-workers tested negative as well. I'll continue to work from home until I get the CVS test results, hopefully by Thursday. The other secretary in the office is okay with that. This Covid scare may be the kick in the pants I need to start eating better consistently and to finally give up some bad habits.

THANK YOU to everyone who cheered me on and offered me hope and good advice over the last few days. I appreciate it all so much! :)

Yay!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) Congrats!!

I've been amazed as so many who can't wear a mask due to health conditions, but manage to go out to eat in restaurants and hanging out in our bars. FB is amazing...

I've seen women discussing in mom's groups how to claim they can't wear a mask to avoid it. They think they need to fight and refuse to wear masks now because it will only get worse with forced vaccinations and the mark of the beast. *eyeroll* So incredibly selfish that they can't wear a damn mask to spare someone's life or the hospitals burden and risking of the lives of doctors and nurses. Nope. They need to take a stand against trying to prevent the spread of infectious disease.
