Coronavirus: Thousands of COVID-19 survivors could be diagnosed with sepsis, charity warns

People are being warned to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of sepsis after a study found that as many as 20,000 COVID-19 survivors could be diagnosed with the condition within a year.

One in five people who receive hospital treatment for the coronavirus are at risk, according to the UK Sepsis Trust.

Sepsis is triggered when the body overreacts to an infection, causing the immune system to turn on itself - leading to tissue damage, organ failure and potentially death.

If spotted quickly, it can be treated with antibiotics before it turns into septic shock and damages vital organs.

Dr Ron Daniels, founder of the UK Sepsis Trust, says everyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 - even those who only suffered mild symptoms - should know how to spot the condition.

There are six signs to look out for, and they spell out the word sepsis:

• S for slurred speech and confusion
• E for extreme pain in the muscles or joints
• P for passing no urine in a day
• S for severe breathlessness
• I for "it feels like I'm going to die"
• S for skin that is mottled or discoloured

The UK Sepsis Trust wants the government to invest in a national awareness campaign, as it warns a sharp rise in cases could kill many people and cost the NHS more than £1bn in patient care.

Big day for me. First hair cut since Feb! A hairdresser my mum has been with for 20+ years came to my house in my working-from-home lunch break today. She had a mask and sterilised kit. Snip snip snip and my shoulder length straggles were gone. I think I'm now kind of channeling Tyne Daly but I quite like it, feels fresh. Mr HKP says it's given me a big lift, mood wise. He thinks its because it's good to start feeling less restricted by Covid. He could be right.

52 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Tuesday DHEC update
"On Tuesday afternoon, DHEC said it recorded 1573 new confirmed cases and 52 new confirmed deaths.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 83,720 probable cases to 389, confirmed deaths to 1,505, and 60 probable deaths.

The state had been experiencing a lower numbers of cases and positive tests in recent days compared to the past several weeks."

I did nothing but harm myself with immune boosters and some vitamins. First off, Vit C is terrible for my interstitial cystitis. Second, I didn't know I had an autoimmune disease and that the last thing I needed was to be boosting my already overactive immune response. I also took a prescription D for too long and suffered some pretty ugly skin issues. I am now much more careful about what I take. We think of vitamins as completely harmless and natural when they really aren't. I do take a couple of things now, but only after careful consideration with my doctor and research on my part.

I thought it was the lack of vitamin D that causes skin issues.

I thought a lot of that had to do with the US government's basically giving companies incentives to move. I can't exactly blame China or the Chinese people. I mean they want to make a living just like us. And those people working for slave wages over there are just trying to survive. We can all make choices ourselves to buy more that's made in America. Though at this point it's incredibly hard to do with many things.

All that to say I do get the sentiment of what you are saying and can understand. I just hate to see the mostly innocent people of China blamed for wanting to get ahead.

I think I incorrectly stated South Carolina instead of North Carolina. But yes, IIRC it had to do with the free trade agreement. Regardless I disagree with our industries moving to China in droves like they did at the expense of our country’s economy . Yes, China’s government is corrupt, not its people. Jmo

One billion dollars has gone to Moderna... And all these companies are "advertising their progress"... It's a fierce competitive race, and I fear things will be pushed too too fast. I wouldn't be surprised if we get some whistle blower stuff down the road.

With the recommended supplements in regards to building the immune system for covid, I feel relatively comfortable with my B,C,D, and NAC.... Even with Zinc, I read that you don't take it unless you start to get symptoms.

But can you explain more about how the C messed with you. I am not sure what the interstitial cystitis with the C. And what did the D do with your skin? Can you share how much C you took, or how much you feel is dangerous.. Sometimes I do feel something is "eating" at my stomach...but not sure what it is (Now that I am forbidden to ever ever take nsaids again!!). Going to gastro doc for colonoscopy followup tomorrow so will probably ask her too... I just think I have not done enough research with C.

Latest CDC numbers on the rate of deaths with COVID-19 per population as of July 27, 2020 set forth below.

Note that the CDC reports counts for New York City and New York state separately, so data for New York State shows deaths for the State excluding data for NYC.

The numbers continue to show how much worse the New York City metro area has been compared to the rest of the country.

The rate for New York City continues to possibly be the worst death rate for any location in the world. New York City's death rate is:

more than 8 times the death rate of Georgia--which started opening back up 3 months ago;

more than 20 times the death rate of South Dakota--which never really closed;

more than 10 times the death rate in Florida, which has been called a COVID hot spot since all the way back to mid-June;

more than 15 times the death rate in Texas, another state that has been called a hot spot since all the way back to mid-June; and

about 6 times the death rate in Arizona, which was called “the new national hotspot for COVID-19” back on June 14th.

The greater NYC metro region including NJ, CT, MA, and RI continues to be way way out ahead of everywhere else in the country in deaths per population.

Interesting. The total deaths in NYC are just so awful. And they say the patient 0 was from Italy not China. I just feel that eventually they are going to have some real mutation research that will tell us more of why it was so so deadly in NYC.

In the beginning when it seemed health authorities were not endorsing face coverings, I already thought otherwise, that at the very least it would be helpful to me—personally—as it would help keep me from touching my mouth. And it really does help me in that regard.

It’s a bad holdover habit I have from being a nail biter for most of my life, which is embarrassing to admit. Finally quit, but I still find I fidget with my hands by touching my nails a lot or touching them to my lips.

I’m glad the messaging finally feels like they are fully endorsing masks now, but wish they would have been more clear from the beginning. They’ve been wearing them in Japan and other Asian countries, after all, for years and years. It’s not a new concept.. Why was it hard for the science experts here in the US to think of the idea of homemade, non-ppe cloth masks—why not right at the start?

I just think that standard nursing and health care training was so strong on when and when not to wear masks. A couple of my friends who were nurses were also firm in the beginning that you only wear a mask if you are the carrier. I just think the whole profession had to unravel that thinking. But oh how it would have been better earlier. I wish I new the precise moment that it went political. I really did not catch on to that issue early. When I was first going into a couple of stores very early in the am, everyone was wearing masks.... I just don't know when it really changed to be such a stupid controversy.....

Human trial for coronavirus vaccine launched by Moderna enters Phase 3

Dr. Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and chairman of Moderna Therapeutics, said the biotech firm would become the first U.S. company to enter Phase III of a clinical trial for a potential coronavirusvaccine.

Moderna is one of the top contenders in the global race to develop a vaccine to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“The plan is to start enrolling this morning, and this will continue over the next couple of months. We have a very strong demand of folks who volunteered to participate,” Afeyan told ABC News' chief anchor George Stephanopoulos Monday on "Good Morning America."

The blind trial is expected to include 30,000 volunteers. Half of the volunteers will receive Moderna’s vaccine and the other half will receive a placebo of sodium and water. Afeyan said countries will work to identify the most vulnerable people to ensure they receive a vaccine first.

Volunteers are needed for this vaccine trial and future clinical trials. People 18 years of age and older who are interested in participating in a trial can visit the Coronavirus Prevention Networkor ClinicalTrials.gov, with a search identifier NCT04470427 for specific locations.

I was actually thinking of ways to visit with friends and family members when it's too cold outdoors to sit around the deck or yard while staying at least 6 feet apart. I'm considering getting a 10 x 20 back yard shed then put a dividing wall in the center with plexiglass or clear plastic sheeting starting at 4 feet from the floor. Separate door on each 10 x 10 room. Electric heater or wood stove on each side. After the pandemic is over we can store mowers, generator and large tools on one side and I can make a she shed on the other At least this is how I'll present it to Hubby.

I'm a bit late to the party but this sounds like a fantastic idea. Makes me think of confessional with the partition concept, but you could make it really homey and comfortable. Soft chairs, coffeemaking facilities, windows on each side for fresh air and sunlight.
