I wonder about the training of the test-givers. They've hired so many new people to do it, I don't think the requirements for hire are very high (probably a month of training). I'm sure sometimes it's nurses, or there's a nurse nearby, but it takes a while to really get the idea of how the nasal anatomy works in different people and not everyone's nose is the same. Needs to be enough swabbing, not just a little.

In Virginia the test are administered by licenses medical personnel, per Board of Pharmacy and Medicine regulations. (LOL, Virginia is know for requiring a license for everything and a nice fee for the state coffers.)

Virginia used the NG medical core to assist with NHs, many companies provide testing for businesses many of these are self administered, CVS is self administered. I'm not confident in the reliability of self administered. Not sure I could stick a swab up my nose and do a good job.

I think the test with medical professionals would be more accurate. A large food manufacturer in my town had a large outbreak. They use a company with self administered to test 400 employees. Many of the employees did not reach deep into the nasal cavity with the nasal swab, resulting in only a few positives. Over the next week, many became symptomatic and tested postive at the doctors office.

Hopefully they put some aside for the future. Utilities in Nevada would be around $300 including internet (but not phone). Two phones in a family...$150-200 month.

Also UI is taxable, so take away 10%.

But for many, you rightfully point out, this was an increase in funds (especially if they checked the "do not withhold tax" which virtually every person apparently did!

$1800 a week is good income. Hopefully all of these people saved (I know they didn't; they rented RV's, stayed in hotels, came to the beach, went to casinos, etc. etc).

Costco had lines literally around the building. Flat screens, new laptops, were flying out of there. It was like Christmas on steroids!

Smart people, saved and scrimped. I am not saying that people are not having hard times, but it was a bit unrealistic, given the extra funding for UI.

Even if both parents are on UI now, without the extra $600 a week, a family of four, with income of even $600 a week. That is $2400 a month, not even close to eligibility for SNAP benefits. The drama!

I think that people are still a ways off from being destitute. When the unemployment insurance benefit extensions run out, that is when we will see some real problems.

Typical. "We don't like the results, we can conclude this study.". People have felt "depressed and on edge", for the last 7 days? How about for the last 4 months?!

Although, the news seems a bit slanted on the negativity. I was watching a segment on a family who had both parents on unemployment benefits, in Nevada, so, even without factoring in their weekly benefit amount, they were getting $1200 a week, if we assume even a lower WBA of $300 a week, that is $1800 a week this family was receiving. They lived in a 2 bedroom apt, rent, probably $1500 a month.

Anyway, the segment was how they couldn't pay their rent or buy food....I am like, on $1800 a week?! Seriously?!

In Virginia our largest eviction population is low income in government housing. A large population receive SSI, SSDA, SSA, or have zero income.

These folks income did not change, their rents were very low, some even 15.00 per month and they did not pay one dime of rent. And yes, they received 1200. Plus 500. Per child stimulus checks and in VA food stamps were increased to the maximum regardless of income AND the school systems sent food cards for 388.00 per child regardless of income.

Not seeing why they didn't pay rent and now we have millions in rental assistance to assist them..

Unemployment in Virginia is 388.00 per week plus the 600.00 per week stimulus stipend. That's 988.00 per week, that not a shabby income for a weekly income.

Granted rent in Virginia, even in our metropolitan areas don't compare with NYC, LA or mega cities.

The State of Fl. total cases would be even more if our Gov. didn't shut down state run testing sites from July 30-Aug. 5 due to the incoming
tropical storm/Hurricane.
So watch for the cases to bump back up to 10-11,000 new cases per day after all testing sites
are re-opened.

Virginia positive case increase was low the last several days, when I looked at number of test it was down by over 6k, for a state that test 10k per day.

We may see increases in all the east coast states over the next week.

@10ofRods
I’m truly stumped at the fact that this has to be experiential for anyone to understand.

Yeah - I am too, to some extent. It's been 40 years of teaching - and well, it's a lack of prior education and working with numbers, if you ask me. American students' scores have decreased steadily since around 1963. When I graduated HS in 1973, they were already calling us stupid-in-math (teachers used words like that, back before the self-esteem movement).

What was interesting to me, going to a university where half the students were from outside California, is that a whole freakin' lot of students weren't stupid-in-math. They'd already taken a year or two of calculus!

Me: what's calculus??

It's the same today. I work with one of the best stat professors I've ever seen. I try really hard to go back to basics using real, human examples.

I think the emotional weight of speaking about death-in-general, about parental and grandparental death, and...invisible "germs" that cause illness is too much for a lot of sheltered and fairly uneducated young people. The non-Hispanic students are of course no better and some of the Hispanic kids come from families of nurses (they are often striving to be doctors), and LVN's.

We also have to cover climate change, past extinction and near-extinction events, and other pandemics. And it won't just be in my class - geology, geography, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, psychology, political science, and their two favorite subjects: psychology and sociology.

All those classes make them feel uncomfortable and grim, for one reason or another.

Two Knox County doctors have filed suit, claiming the county, its health department and its health board relied on 'faulty data' to issue Knox County's mask mandate.

"Two Knox County doctors have filed suit, claiming the county, its health department and its health board relied on ‘faulty data’ to issue Knox County’s mask mandate.

According to court documents obtained by WVLT News, Dr. Steven J. Smith and Dr. Jason J. Hall filed the suit in Chancery Court on July 24 against Knox County, the Knox County Health Department, its director, Dr. Martha Buchanan, the Knox County Board of Health, and its Chair, Jack Gotcher.

The suit claims the county “relied on faulty data which includes false positives for the support and adoption” of the mandate. The health department said Wednesday that false-positive test results are counted as positive because there is no way to determine which test was correct. This means if a person takes two tests and one is negative and one is positive, the department counts it as positive.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged their rights afforded under the Tennessee constitution were violated by the defendants. Court documents show both Knox County doctors are asking for the ‘nullification, voidance, revocation, or any other relief deemed fit by the Court.”"

Central Massachusetts hotel accused of hosting 300-person wedding this month, despite COVID restrictions

A Massachusetts hotel hosted back-to-back events last weekend that far exceeded the state’s 100-person capacity limit on outdoor events during the pandemic, despite multiple warnings from government officials tipped off to the plans, according to complaints received by state and local officials.

The hotel was the site of a wedding on Saturday that had 240 guests and 70 staff members, according to a summary of allegations against the venue provided by the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards. The Business Journal obtained the summary through a public records request.

Maybe start handing out fines to each attendee? If they knew in advance, just have a hearse parked out front with someone in full PPE handing out DNR bracelets.

I was thinking the same. Fine each attendee. This wasn’t some impromptu backyard gathering

Live presser DeWine.

For more detailed information, see our cookies page.

Governor DeWine did a press briefing using Zoom. He said that the first thing he did when he got back the positive result on the rapid test for COVID-19 on his way to greet the President at the airport near Cleveland was to call his wife, and then he called each of his 7 adult children to let them know before this got out to the media. He was asked by reporters at the zoom press briefing if he has any high risk physical issues, other than being 73. He said he has asthma, and has had asthma most of his life, but it is under control, he uses an inhaler twice a day, in the morning when he gets up, and at night. He was asked if he has any symptoms, but he says none, other than a headache today, but he says in his job he gets a lot of headaches, so this is not unusual. He is waiting for the results of the tests that he and his wife got today, following the rapid test from the White House.

I no longer teach school, when I did, I was "itinerant", meaning I traveled to four schools a day, often 15 schools a week. I wonder how they are going to be able to provide Special Education services. Because that model would definitely be a "Super Speader" if an Itinerant teacher caught Covid.

Hundreds of Victoria protesters to attend anti-mask rally

Hundreds of Victoria protesters to attend anti-mask rally

Natalie Oliveri

...
Hundreds of protesters are vowing to ignore Victoria's coronavirus public health orders to attend an anti-mask rally this weekend.

Police say they will not tolerate the "selfish" behaviour.

The "Freedom Day Celebration" is scheduled for Sunday in Melbourne by organisers who reportedly believe a conspiracy that COVID-19 is a "biochemical" weapon.
More than 400 people have expressed interest in the so-called freedom rally on the steps of Parliament on Sunday.

They are anti-masker, anti-vaccination and anti-business shutdowns, but police say the planned action is a blatant breach of Victoria's Chief Health Officer's directions.

It comes as a new poll has shown that more than half of Australians surveyed believe police should have the power to fine those who spread COVID-19 conspiracy theories.

Sophie Tanno For Mailonline and Reuters

The number of people on a Norwegian cruise ship who have tested positive for the coronavirus has now reached 53.

Following the outbreak on the MS Roald Amundsen, the ship's owner halted all cruises on Monday and Norway closed its ports to cruise ships for two weeks.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health said that during its two journeys last month, a total of 37 crew members and 16 passengers have tested positive. The passengers all registered as living in Norway.

Dr Fauci reveals hired personal security to protect his daughters after receiving death threats | Daily Mail Online

This is so sad- Dr Fauci and his family are being targeted and threatened-- this is so sick and reflects the kind of society we have become---If I were him I would resign and go into hiding with my family: a good man, a brilliant man, who only tells the truth and talks facts ---is the object of hatred----and lies----
Dr. Horacio Arruda, head of public health in Quebec, has been the subject of threats as well. Someone was arrested today.

Another individual is the subject of a police complaint for publishing Dr. Arruda's home address on his Facebook page, leading some of his followers to say they wanted to go "thank the good doctor".

US State Department lifts global 'Do Not Travel' advisory - CNNPolitics

Yay, we can travel. Oh, how many countries are letting United States citizens in?

Wow ... I guess when a country is in a worse situation than most anyone else, the leaders don't care if their citizens travel around and spread the virus.

We have a govt website called smartraveller. I sign up to it and register my travel destinations any time I go overseas. They then email warnings about the countries you have noted that you are travelling to or through.

They have had this banner across their website since March. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

They added this banner the day before yesterday. upload_2020-8-7_8-35-2.png
