Australia has wisely resisted the temptation to compare their own CoVid management with what's happening in the US. The Australian crisis is due to community spread from unknown sources. That makes it impossible to contact trace in order to suppress the spread. That is indeed a public health crisis.

There ought to be a different term for the situation in the US so that countries don't minimize their need to stop community spread just because their numbers are better than those in the US.

Yes, we don't even begin to compare what is going on elsewhere with what is happening here. We understand that our country's 278 covid deaths are nothing compared to other places. But they are a big deal to us. Each and every death is someone's loved relative.

Believe it or not, there has even been talk of a stage five plan, if the stage four lockdown doesn't settle things down. If we have to starve the virus further, I think we will.

I think the leadership in the US just ruffled some Aussie feathers by trying to distract what is going on in most places in the US with the comparitively small issue we have in the one Aussie state of Victoria.

It's insane

There is a motorcycle rally this week, with people who are coming from all over the United States, and they will travel back.

Americans are moving around too much and taking coronavirus with them, expert says - CNN

This is the problem. People are going everywhere. There is a motorcycle rally this week, with people who are coming from all over the United States, and they will travel back.

The out of control travel just continues to create more community spread.
That's because they are allowed right? Only some states have closed their borders.

This link has info about which states are doing what and whether they are open, closed, pausing or re-opening etc.

According to the CDC, child vaccination rates are way down across the country.

Pediatricians are really worried that the drop in vaccinations could set the stage for more disease outbreaks.

Don't have a link, heard it on the radio this morning.
I have a link that says they were already down in the world in 2019 even before Covid and have fallen since. :-(

That's not good.

One projection shows N.C. could need second shutdown in October, state's top health official weighs in

“The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation released a grim forecast this week, projecting nearly 300,000 Americans could be dead from the coronavirus by Dec. 1 and 22 states might require further stay-at-home orders or restrictions on nonessential businesses in the next four months.

The research showed North Carolina might need another lockdown in October, while South Carolina might need one this month.”

Right. The state I live in, Montana, relies on summer tourism for a bulk of income. And Montana has had the lowest Covid rates, aside from Wyoming and Alaska.

Our governor has allowed unlimited access and travel from anywhere, no quarantine, no questions, it has been an absolute free for all. I talked to a gal the other day who is a housekeeper at the Marriott here. I "assumed" the place would be empty, I mean, seriously, who is going to travel during a pandemic?! The place has been booked solid, she says that she has never been busier. Even though they are not cleaning rooms for people every day. But these folks stay one or two nights, and leave. So the rooms have to be cleaned again.

They are hiring. So, there is that.

I have to say it amazes me the way the seemingly-necessary lockdowns keep being delayed. I guess they are waiting for the summer fun and income to be over?

I think most schools have counselors. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Jmo
As a former teacher, I can tell you that subject teachers are not trained in suicide prevention and/or drug overdoses. Specialized school personnel are involved in suicide and drugs. Counselor are for academics and perhaps problems, but they mostly refer such cases to proper personnel.
IMO rather than send kids to schools where they could be at risk for COVID-19, it would be beneficial to have a hot line for kids, similar to that of adults. How many kids are candidates for suicide and drug overdose vs. the student population getting ill or dying from COVID-19?

I don't know the answer to your last question, honestly. I'm going by what the CDC reported as far as upward trends in the overdoses and suicides. I can verify my own county has the same issue at least with overdoses. I'm not sure, but I think a good chunk of the problem could be kids having parents that aren't overly concerned for their welfare as far as getting them counseling and help. It truly is a shame we've fallen from grace to the point that educators seem to care more about children than their parents. Jmo

ok, with all of our technology why can't they come up with tests that are actually accurate? I thought this problem was just in the US-- apparently not, although i think it is worse here in the US

I think its more noticeable in the US because we run so many tests. I wonder how many companies are manufacturing inaccurate tests?

I wonder what companies recieved the lucrative contracts. They should have gone to established companies who already make medical supplies, 3M, Baxter, but I have no doubt a bunch of new "carpet baggers" jumped in as well. Those are probably the bad apples.

This is actually month old news. They were originally highlighted as faulty and taken out of use mid July.

Safety fears see 750,000 Covid test kits recalled

Details from above link.

"The government said it was a "precautionary measure" and the risk to safety was low.

It comes weeks after the health secretary said Randox kits should not be used until further notice.

In mid-July, Matt Hancock said the swabs in some kits were "not up to standard".

The Department for Health and Social Care said results from Randox tests were unaffected.

A spokeswoman said: "We have high safety standards for all coronavirus tests. Following the pausing of Randox kits on 15 July, Randox have now recalled all test kits as a precautionary measure." "

Let's be honest: As a country we are doing everything wrong- if we want to stop the spread of this evil virus and get some control-- we are doing everything right if the goal is to spread the virus far and wide---
