Michigan State And Notre Dame Suspend In-Person Learning Over COVID-19 Concerns

"The virus is a formidable foe," Jenkins said. "For the past week, it has been winning. Let us as the Fighting Irish join together to contain it."

He said 146 students and one staff member have tested positive for the virus since Aug. 3. None has been hospitalized. He added that seniors living off-campus account for a large share of the cases, and most infections are coming from "off-campus gatherings where neither masks were worn nor physical distancing observed."

University of Notre Dame is closing down for two weeks to try to get the spread under control. Hoping they are successful. Michigan State is pivoting to full remote for the semester. We all have contingency plans, and are ready to make changes as things evolve, if necessary.

It probably doesn't matter anyway. What is anyone going to do about where it first started? Except possibly hate on those people, and maybe even misguidedly on that whole race. There is already plenty of hate in this world without adding more.

The virus is here. It has been here all year. Whatever happened, we all have to deal with it now and work together to find a safe way to go on.

You are beautiful. Unless you're a man, then you are a handsome specimen with impeccable taste.

It will be interesting to see how the free market deals with this, down the road. During the debate about whether or not to play college football, several pundits said that decisions will be made based on the fact that no college president wants to be the first one to have a student die of Covid.

In my opinion, after this semester there will be enormous pressure from parents, students and (some) faculty to get back to normal, regardless of risk. I suspect some institutions will continue to err on the side of caution, while others will go with liability waivers and new ideas in terms of trying to live with the virus as safely as possible. If the colleges that are playing football successfully complete the season, it's going to be fascinating to see how it affects the Big 10 and Pac 12.

One confirmed COVID case, several more possible cases tied to Holy Cross party, officials say
also mass/more at link
The College of the Holy Cross reported this week its public safety officers broke up a large off-campus party Saturday night in Worcester that was attended by at least one COVID-19 positive student.

The school says the number in attendance at the party in an apartment rented by students on College Street exceeded the state limit on the number of people at a gathering, which is currently 25, and that students were not wearing masks or adhering to physical distancing guidelines.
“Needless to say, this is a profoundly disappointing situation,” the school announced in a letter. “The students responsible for the party will be held accountable under our Community Standards process.”

Massachusetts health officials on Wednesday announced that influenza immunization will now be required for all children aged 6 months or older who are attending Massachusetts child care, pre-school, kindergarten, K-12, and colleges and universities, part of a measure to address respiratory illness during the coronavirus pandemic.

UMass says it is ready to handle 10,000 COVID-19 tests per week
More at link
UMass officials, are confident their process will work for up to 10,000 tests per week.

“We’re planning for twice a week for the population on campus,” said Hescock, the UMass executive director of Environmental Health and Safety and Emergency Management. He said about 200 tests had been done Thursday morning, when the staff did demonstrations for media while tests were also being conducted.

The administration’s decision to pull back its initial plan to bring back 7,000 students has not really altered the procedure, but made it more manageable and allowed for twice-weekly testing. The campus student population will number between 1,000 and 1,100, according to Dawn Bond, UMass director of residential life operations.

It is unlikely that the students will die from Covid, the death rate for under 30 is less than 3%. However, the death rate for those over 55, is close to 90%. Especially if you have any underlying conditions.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be teaching now.
Population-level COVID-19 mortality risk for non-elderly individuals overall and for non-elderly individuals without underlying diseases in pandemic epicenters
Covid19 death rate for over age 55 is really 90%? Wow!!!

It goes up exponentially, if you read the statistics. At the granular level, no, 90% of people age 55, who get Covid will not die of Covid. But as you go higher in age groups, the higher percentage of death. The wild card element, is if you have any underlying conditions.

There is a heck of a lot of data in the report but I'm reading in the conclusion section that under 65s have a low rate.

The neutral and absolutely unbiased New York Times (citing another impartial source "a new US intelligence report) tells us that the evil "Chinese commies" hid Coronavirus dangers....wow...the pure, blinding Truth
I believe every single word they say LOL

I think I detect a note of sarcasm- hmmmm

I almost had a panic attack with the 90%! Awful stuff!

I wasn't able to find the 90% death rate in this article. The death rate is high for over 65 but wasn't 90%.
Was it a particular comorbidity that was 90%?

As COVID-19 eviction moratoriums expire, Soledad O'Brien examines toll of pandemic on America's most vulnerable (exclusive)

August 19, 2020, 12:00 PM EDT

Darlene Turner has been living in her Bronx, N.Y., apartment for 34 years, never failing to pay her monthly rent, now $1,022, thanks to a solid job at the Marriott Marquis hotel’s restaurant in Times Square — until now. COVID-19 shut down her hotel and took her job on March 16. Now, after months without income, she faces the latest threat the COVID-19 pandemic has visited on millions of Americans: eviction.

DBM as no source, and not sure if data.

The only information I can find quickly online is that as of July 24, 2020, 80% of deaths from COVID-19 in the U.S. are of people over 65. The percentage in each state ranges from 70% in Texas to 94% in Idaho. In Ohio, where I live, 86% of COVID-19 deaths have been people over 65. So over 65 is clearly the highest risk group, apart from individuals in other age groups who have comorbidities.

I thought I heard on the news tonight that 90% of the deaths in the U.S. were of people over 55. So that would leave 10% of deaths in the U.S. to people under 55. I don't remember what news I was listening to while multi-tasking, so don't have link. Someone please correct me if this is wrong.

If anyone wants to do Indiana's math, I'm guessing we are typical. Attached are total cases, death toll, and age % for cases and deaths.

I'd do it myself but I accidentally took a double dose of melatonin. I'm currently useless.
