Normally I wouldn't care either, but in this case, if we intend to eradicate CoVid, enough people will have to accept the vaccination.

I remember lining up at school for the polio vaccine. No one had the choice to "opt" out. Nor did we want to.

When I taught school, we had a nurse that came around to our classrooms with a flu shot trolley. We signed the paperwork, and got a shot. If you didn't want a flu shot, you had to wear a mask at work for six months.

I didn't see any masks.

I can see that Covid vaccinations will be required for schools, workplaces, and likely also in order to travel. It wouldn't surprise me to see borders remain closed until a vaccine is available and then require proof of vaccination in order to visit some countries, or to return to ones own country.

I don't know. I had parents who had a book by Jenny McCarthy, Queen of the "Anti-Vax" movement, they held it like a Bible. And quoted out of it, during IEP meetings. They were convinced that the "reason" their child was in Special Education was due to some vaccine.

Seriously, that whole "Anti-Vax" movement is like a religion. These folks are not going to get a Covid vaccine. And they convert others, out of fear. You need to see these people. There is no rational discussion with these folks.

A report this morning is that the vaccine won't stop Covid but will lessen the effects so how good would it be if it stopped deaths in the elderly.
I haven't been able to see my mum in a nursing home for 2 months due to their lock-down.
A report this morning said that two outbreaks in seperate nursing homes in Melbourne was due to a birthday party and a baby shower. Go figure why those were allowed!

I think I likely wouldn't care who chose not to have a covid jab.
Bit like the flu vaccine ... heaps of people have the jab, heaps of others dont.
You measure the risks you are willing to take for yourself. As long as you are not putting others in jeopardy through your choice. imo
Except they can still give vaccinated people covid if it's not 100% effective. And it won't be. And they will.

That said, I don't think we can force people.

But that is because our parents were more than grateful that polio could be prevented. Our mother's generation all lived through outbreaks and there were not many communities who did not have at least one person in those awful leg calipers.

I have had anti-vaxxers publish the contraindications leaflet to prove how harmful they could be, but if you read any of those leaflets on any medication, they list every possible thing that could go wrong. Aspirin has risks, however small.

According to Bill Gates, this is the number of people who will have to accept the vaccination in order to eradicate COVID-19

Bill Gates: If 30-60% of Americans take coronavirus vaccine, 'exponential spread' will stop
I need to point out that in the headline, Gates is talking about stopping 'exponential growth'. That's not equivalent to eradication.

Exponential growth is when the daily case count doubles then triples then quadruples, etc day by day.

If you bring the growth down so that the same number of people are infected every day, day after day for weeks, months, that's the end of exponential growth, but it still means new people are being infected all the time, and people are dying as well.

Fewer than half of Americans say they will get a coronavirus vaccine

Less than half of Americans say they will get a coronavirus vaccine when one becomes available, a new survey reveals.
Low rates of willingness to get a potential COVID-19-blocking shot is of concern to public health experts as the US continues to push to reopen, despite more than 30,000 cases being diagnosed a day.

Top US infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci has warned: 'We have our work cut out for us,' during an American Society for Microbiology meeting.

'Society is not just jumping around waiting to get a vaccine. It's not,' he acknowledged.

'We have got to change that.'

Public health experts see willingness to get vaccinated as particularly pressing as they brace for the potential of a second wave of coronavirus as the US heads into flu season and children return to school.
...
The higher people's incomes were, the more likely they were to plan on getting a COVID-19 shot, with 55 percent of those making over $100,00 planning on getting vaccinated.

Forty-five percent of people making between $50,000 and $99,000 a year said that they planned to get the shot, while just 37 percent of those who made less than $50,000 said they would.

Similarly, vaccine confidence increased with education. Fifty-six percent of people who had a college degree or higher planned to get vaccinated.

"But the country has hope, he said, because he thinks that by 2021, once the Food and Drug Administration approves an effective vaccine, "it will bring the pandemic to an end." He added that even if only 30 to 60% of the population willingly receive a vaccine, that could be enough to slow and eventually stop the spread."

Jimmy Fallon was talking the other night about how Halloween candy is coming early this year...

He quipped about how it’s already Halloween because we are frightened and wearing masks.

Many of us are probably stuffing our faces with candy too!

@Herat joked in the early days about his/her candy stash in the “candy shed”. I wonder how that’s holding up. Herat also made the funniest post about dealing with packages. I’d like to read that again for a good laugh.

Eta / here it, from Feb. 28th:
Coronavirus COVID-19 *Global Health Emergency* #8

Eta2: It’s still really funny, but not as funny as is was back in February, considering our current reality. No way I would’ve imagined this back in Feb.

Yes, I think he means that stopping the exponential spread will stop the pandemic, ie the WHO, or whoever, will declare the pandemic is over. I'm just pointing out that the word 'eradicate' has a specific meaning ie smallpox was eradicated, but not measles, TB, malaria, colds and flu, and so forth.

Today didn't turn out to be as great as I thought it would.

I could see countries requiring their citizens get the vaccination before travelling and insisting that travellers from other countries have the vaccination before entering. That is what happened with smallpox, innoculations for immigrants and refugees to countries which had eradicated it, post WW2.

Anti-vaxxers protest against coronavirus vaccine

Anti-vaxxers protest against coronavirus vaccine

Scott Morrison has said will make a coronavirus vaccine 'as mandatory as possible'.

The government on Tuesday signed a deal to bring Oxford University's vaccine to Australia as soon as it is approved, which could be at the end of this year.

As the news broke, thousands of anti-vaxxers bombarded politicians with online abuse and said they would refuse to take it.

But in an interview on Melbourne radio station 3AW, Mr Morrison said he would make the jab compulsory.
Asked if he was prepared for a backlash from anti-vaxxers, the Prime Minister said: 'I'm used to that, I was the minister that established no jab, no play.

What a fibber. That was Malcom Turnbull.
