UNC wanted online and didn’t think the students would adhere to the necessary precautions or follow the code of conduct - but the board of governors (elected by North Carolina lawmakers) decided that all of its universities would open for in-person classes for the fall semester.
:(

It's so frustrating that, once the U.S. decided not to pursue virus eradication, that a plan wasn't put in place to deal with this massive chasm between people that will take their chances in public and people who are comfortable in isolation. Here is another case - if the campus was "open," classrooms would be full, yet the administration is coming from a different place. It seems like we are way beyond the point of saying "young people need to take this seriously!" Otherwise I see an endless cycle of open a school, close when one person tests positive and then broadcast images of kids at a massive house party. And this applies to everything. It's exhausting reading the same stories, with the expectation that it will be different "next time."

1 out of 460,000 would be a miracle. This ain't over yet.
:(
I agree. It just seems weird they just want to put out this info about 1 positive case from a week ago. Is that all they are contact tracing ATM ?

One out of 460,000 so far.
Who wasn't asymptomatic AND got tested AND admitted where he spent a great deal of time, exposing who knows how many others.

How many out of 460,000 who were asymptomatic or who were symptomatic but didn't get tested, or who got tested but didn't admit to being in a place for a substantial period of time, exposing who knows how many others? How many?
Any cases will end up being traced though as they would pass it on so it would end up being discovered IMO.

I don't think the U.S. is doing contract tracing. There are too many. My husband was exposed and the only reason he knows is because the person who exposed him called him to say so. He didn't have to. How would they even trace who was in that bar for 5ish hours, and then the people from the bar were with how many others? So the "contract tracing" is this article, in the hope that all the people in that bar just happen to read it.

Good news for those in Maryland....

Governor Larry Hogan - Official Website for the Governor of Maryland

State of Maryland Applies for Additional $300 Per Week In Federal Unemployment Benefits
Lost Wages Assistance Program, Expected To Begin in Late September, Provides Benefits Retroactive to August 1

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that Maryland has submitted an application to the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) grant, which will provide an additional $300 per week to Marylanders who are unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Maryland is doing much better on our health metrics than most of the rest of the country, we are doing much better on our economic recovery than most of the rest of the country, and we want to do whatever it takes to keep it that way,” said Governor Hogan. “But far too many Marylanders are still struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic. With this critical funding, we can help those struggling Marylanders weather this storm, get back on their feet, and recover.”

Once FEMA reviews and approves the state’s grant application, the Maryland Department of Labor’s Division of Unemployment Insurance will coordinate with the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) and FEMA to program, implement, and distribute LWA funds, which is expected to begin in late September.

“Our department is grateful for the opportunity to apply for federal funding from FEMA to provide additional financial support to unemployed Marylanders as our state continues to recover from the impact of COVID-19,” said Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Tiffany P. Robinson. “While it will take some time to work with the federal administration to implement this new program, all claimants will receive benefit payments retroactive to their earliest date of eligibility within the new program.”

(ETA I don't know how US bars do it. In the UK, patrons have to provide their contact details to get served. )

I am just basing it on the fact that Sturges has put that info out about the time the infected person was at the bar so that people know. This is where SD are according to RT live. 3rd highest RT number in the country.

Rt is the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If it’s above 1.0, COVID-19 will spread quickly. If it’s below 1.0, infections will slow. Learn More.

We adjust positive tests for the number of tests done. Then, we calculate an implied infection curve. This uses a known distribution of how much time passes between infection and a confirmed positive report."

292 students, 14 teachers quarantined in Martin County

Just one week into the new school year, more than 300 students and teachers combined have been quarantined in Martin County because of possible cases of COVID-19 in classrooms.

Superintendent Laurie Gaylord and other officials presented new information to school board members on Tuesday, suggesting that some parents are irresponsibly sending their children to class when they shouldn't.

I'm drawing a blank on inserting a quote. So sorry. Edit! Figured it out! Yay me!

It seems to be "hit and miss". Our county has a rigorous Contact Tracing program, and every single Covid case is assigned a case manager. Contacts are followed up with phone calls. And several people have been served orders of isolation and quarantine by the sheriffs office. If a specific spot, restaurant has been identified as a "hot spot", the newspaper has that information on the front page.

So, it could be that we have less cases, or that the team here has put a priority on Contact Tracing, that is why we have less cases.

I'm glad they did. But there is an enormous difference between "contract tracing" and giving reporters information in the hopes that people see them. I'm discouraged but unsurprised. There is no way to contract trace the number of people in Sturgis last week.

I love that. I wish it was everywhere!

What happens if there’s no vaccine?

Gah!

I think that's something that should be contemplated regularly - so that people will be more welcoming of a vaccine if/when it comes.

What happens if a coronavirus vaccine is never developed? It has happened before

I predict life would be very different for people who are at higher risk

The 'plan' is that people go about wearing masks, stay several feet apart from those outside their personal bubble, wash their hands regularly, not touching their face, sneeze and cough into their elbows, etc. This is the advice that has been in place for months, this is the bridge that crosses the chasm between isolation and hospitals turning sick people away.

They are also not closing schools because 'one person tests positive' but because of exponential growth amongst a group of people. It seems to me the news articles explain these things quite clearly.

The US is contact tracing in every state.

The Health Dept contacts each positive person.

It is up to the Covid positive person to give the names and if available the phone number or any information to the contract traced.

Could it be the person did not, for whatever reason give the state health dept contact tracer your husband's information? I know some have not wished to give out the information for privacy reasons.

MOO...

He was not contacted. This happened weeks ago and I asked him yesterday. so SOME states are contact tracing. Florida, at least in my area, is not. I do think they are attempting it at schools, and that may not be the health department but the school doing that, but other than that . . .

Our schools start next Monday.
