Wonder what the traumatic effect is going to be on kids because of social distancing and wearing masks at school. No data yet, of course, but it has to have an effect.

Can't have it both ways. Kids will have emotional problems if they do not attend school. Kids will have emotional problems if they attend with social distancing and cannot interact with peers and must wear a mask.

Prediction: this virus isn't going to be solely contained in Clark County.

I think kids will handle it either way. They are pretty resiliant. It's not going too bad in Scotland and the cases they have had in schools have been more from outside school than inside them.

Missing school is 'worse than virus for children'

Children are more likely to be harmed by not returning to school next month than if they catch coronavirus, the UK's chief medical adviser says.

Prof Chris Whitty said "the chances of children dying from Covid-19 are incredibly small" - but missing lessons "damages children in the long run".

Millions of pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are due to return to school within weeks.

Prof Whitty also said Covid-19 would be a challenge for at least nine months.

He said it was unlikely there would be a vaccine in 2020 but there was a "reasonable chance" of a successful jab being ready for the following winter in 2021-22.

The government has said all pupils, in all year groups, in England will be expected to return to class full-time in September. Schools have already reopened in Scotland.

Prof Whitty, who is also England's chief medical officer, said "many more [children] were likely to be harmed by not going than harmed by going" to school.

"There's also very clear evidence from the UK and around the world that children much less commonly get a severe illness and end up having to be hospitalised if they get symptomatic Covid," he added.

Continued at link above.

Below is a report about Scottish schools. Some cases reported but appeared to be outside school transmissions.

Advice 'may change' on face coverings in schools

All makes sense but they leave out the entire subject of children transmitting the virus to others.

Baby brother at home...
Mom, dad, grandpa, siblings...
Friends...
Neighbors...
Their dentist...
Doctor...
Teachers and staff...
In stores.....
Babysitter...
Repair person...
Friendly postman...
ECT....

So yes, most kids likely could go to school and walk around without hardly any symptoms and end up perfectly fine but unless they are in a bubble at boarding school they will spread the virus out to their communities.

Opinion only.

The cases in Scottish schools have mainly been contracted outside school so from family or social gatherings. I don't really think they even know how kids catch or transmit it because a lot are asymptomatic.

The plasma EUA is being done to save lies. If you don't have Covid, you wouldn't need it. The vaccine is different, as a lot of people are anti vax anyway. But anyone with an underlying condition, ( my OH for instance and me as a shielder) would jump at it before winter TYVM.
Of course I meant save lives not lies.

Right to Try

This was briefly mentioned at the PC today.

From the link.

The Right to Try Act, or the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act, was signed into law May 30, 2018. This law is another way for patients who have been diagnosed with life-threatening diseases or conditions who have tried all approved treatment options and who are unable to participate in a clinical trial to access certain unapproved treatments.

Clinical trials provide information about whether a product is safe to use and can effectively treat or prevent a disease. People may have many reasons for participating in clinical trials. In addition to contributing to medical knowledge, some people participate in clinical trials because there is no treatment for their disease, treatments they tried have not worked, or they are not able to tolerate the current treatments.

For patients with serious or immediately life-threatening diseases or conditions, the FDA remains committed to enhancing access to promising investigational medicines for those unable to access investigational medical products through clinical trials. This is the mission of our expanded access program. The agency is dedicated to these purposes, and it has been for more than three decades.

Building on our long-standing efforts to help patients and families who are facing life-threatening diseases or conditions, the FDA is providing information for patients on the Right to Try Act. FDA’s role in implementation of the Right to Try Act is largely focused on those obligations outlined in the law, which is limited to receipt and posting of certain information submitted regarding Right to Try use.

The Right to Try Act permits/allows eligible patients to have access to eligible investigational drugs.

An eligible patient is a patient who has:

  • Been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease or condition
  • Exhausted approved treatment options and is unable to participate in a clinical trial involving the eligible investigational drug (this must be certified by a physician who is in good standing with their licensing organization or board and who will not be compensated directly by the manufacturer for certifying)
  • And has provided, or their legally authorized representative has provided, written informed consent regarding the eligible investigational drug to the treating physician
An eligible investigational drug is an investigational drug:

  • For which a Phase 1 clinical trial has been completed
  • That has not been approved or licensed by the FDA for any use
  • For which an application has been filed with the FDA or is under investigation in a clinical trial that is intended to form the primary basis of a claim of effectiveness in support of FDA approval and is the subject of an active investigational new drug application submitted to the FDA
  • Whose active development or production is ongoing, and that has not been discontinued by the manufacturer or placed on clinical hold by the FDA
If you are interested in Right to Try, you should discuss this pathway with your licensed physician. Companies who develop and make drugs and biologics, also known as sponsors, can provide information about whether their drug/biologic is considered an eligible investigational drug under Right to Try and if they are able to provide the drug/biologic under the Right to Try Act. Ultimately, sponsors developing drugs for life-threatening diseases or conditions are responsible for determining whether to make their products available to patients who qualify for access under the Right to Try Act.

The full text of the Right to Try Act, Public Law 115-176, can be found on US Congress’s website: Public Law 115-176.

The Las Vegas Strip is now a "hotspot" in more ways than one. Where before it was considered a top tourist destination, Las Vegas is gaining a new reputation as ground zero for COVID superspreader events.

According to the Harvard Global Health COVID-19 tracker, Nevada currently has the third-highest concentration of coronavirus cases in the nation. The vast majority of those cases are in Clark County, which houses Las Vegas—meaning the bulk of the state's 65,150 cases and 1,197 deaths have taken place within city limits.

A new study published by the nonprofit news outlet ProPublica looked at anonymized cell phone records of 26,000 individuals in Las Vegas and found that within four days' time, at least 8,000 of those cell phones had dispersed to all but one state in the continental U.S. Though the study didn't specifically track whether those travelers were infected with coronavirus, it stands to reason that the city's major outbreak combined with excessive travel could spell disaster for the rest of the nation.

In a recent interview with NPR hosts Ari Shapiro and Will Stone, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak maintained that the reopening of the Las Vegas Strip was rolled out safely. Yet NPR analysts concluded that the city might face a hospital shortage if it continues on its current path. "With testing still turning up lots of infections, Las Vegas is on shaky footing. Nevada's rate of new cases relative to its population rivals hard-hit Southern states," said Stone.

I wish Laughlin could secede from Clark County. We are so desperate to get back, but all the limitations sound like they've sucked the fun right out.

Same. That is the problem. An app might work better, that sends an alert that the user has been identified as being in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19 and to schedule a test as soon as possible.

I don't know, but what is happening now isn't working.
Maybe a Covid alert could pop up and you would have to answer the call or it wouldn’t stop beeping. Something to get the recipient’s attention because people dying of it isn’t obviously doing it.

That would be a yeah no from me.
If they have my name and phone number, they can probably find my address easily enough.
I would give my “secondary” email which I give to questionable requests or to used vehicle sales people.

CNN's Dr. Elmer Huerta volunteered for a coronavirus vaccine trial. Here's why - CNN

Not enough Blacks and Latinos are participating in US vaccine trials to fight Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. CNN en Español Medical Correspondent Dr. Elmer Huerta hopes to change their minds.

<snipped>

In fact, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins gave the trial a "C" grade for recruiting minorities.
"From the first week I saw the numbers, and they were not as encouraging as I would have liked," Collins told CNN.
The vaccine could be delayed if the trials don't recruit enough minorities. That's why Huerta, a longtime public health advocate, volunteered for the Phase III trial.

"When you have a clinical trial, it's extremely important for all the races and ethnicities to be represented because sometimes there are differences in toxicity and effectiveness of a medication or vaccine," Huerta said.

‘How is this possible? What are the odds?’ The Graveson family, on what the coronavirus has done to them — The Washington Post

“We were taking aggressive measures to social distance, but I must have picked it up at the grocery store or somewhere. “

“We were so careful. I wasn’t allowed to see friends, even though I asked my parents like a thousand times a day. We wore masks. We quarantined more than any family I know. “
——-
That is super scary. How in the heck did they get it? Off a package? Through a mask at the store? Aggressive measures and still got it. Makes no sense. I don’t know if I can hibernate for a year.

Virginia family discuss what coronavirus has done to it

Same article, family, no paywall. Interesting, and very similar story to the young girl from Montana. Young, healthy teens, at death's door. And no direct link to how this family became infected.

Curious.

That is the most frightening thing: you think you are doing everything right-- and then despite all those measures you take- you wind up getting Covid-- never really knowing how you got it---- it is so scary

Things in Victoria keep on improving. They are very close to the 100 mark of new daily cases. Took a little time, but the lockdown is working.

Today's increase of 116 new cases follows 208 new cases on Sunday and 182 on Saturday.
It is the lowest daily increase in cases since July 5, when 74 new cases were reported.
Victoria records lowest number of new coronavirus cases in more than seven weeks

One of the things we saw when school first opened was students starting classes probably not knowing they had been exposed elsewhere.
Yep. IMO-that will happen in Iowa as well with both students and staff.

Late Iowa news today: IDPH confirms first child death from COVID-19
This child passd away in June, but info. not released until now because of autopsy and extensive other tests.
Indianola confirms additional COVID-19 case in schools It sounds like this school doesn't start until Monday or Tues. of this week so that is good and the positive teacher exposed other staff on a teacher work day. What is not good is if they don't have enough substitute teachers, they will allow quarantined teachers to come back if they are screened and asymptomatic. Let's hope they have enough subs!
