Why am I not surprised

One of our previous Prime Ministers is causing a bit of controversy today. "Elderly covid people could just be left to die naturally." While the rest of the nation resumes normal life.

Pope Francis holds first public audience since March

Francis has been holding his regular Wednesday audience online since March.

Pope Francis called for solidarity in battling Covid-19.

"The current pandemic has highlighted our interdependence: we are all linked to each other, for better or for worse. Therefore, to come out of this crisis better than before, we have to do so together, all of us, in solidarity," he said.

Members of the audience wore masks, as did some of the priests in attendance.

My state, as well as Tasmania, are officially covid-free at the moment. Don't blink .. I am sure it won't last too long. We still have the prospect of bringing those 300 international students into the state to resume/start studies ... presumably at the end of the year ready for the next semester, but I really don't know exactly when it will happen. Maybe sooner.

Plus I am sure there are other sources that will sneak their way in.

Why would an online student need a test? Presumably they are not attending in person classes.
Because school systems BEGIN with online classes and gradually go to full time. At least, that's what the University of MN is doing, as are most Minnesota school systems.

My local school system started with 3 options. Physical school attendance, 2 virtual options. I think it depends on your state.

Fauci predicts 'safe and effective' coronavirus vaccine by end of year

"I believe that by the time we get to the end of this calendar year that we will feel comfortable that we do have a safe and effective vaccine," Dr. Anthony Fauci said.

He added that in a number of vaccine trials, there is "enough data that you would really feel comfortable it was safe and effective for the American public."

Fauci also warned about the upcoming flu season compounding the coronavirus pandemic. To help avoid that, he said the U.S. should focus hard now on reducing the spread of the virus.

“What I'd really like to see is a full court press to get us way down as a baseline, so that when you get these cases in the fall, they won't surge up,” he said.

Fauci also said people should be cautious over the coming Labor Day weekend. "We have seen after Fourth of July, we saw after Memorial Day, a surge in cases. Wear a mask. Keep social distancing. Avoid crowds," he advised. "You can avoid those kind of surges. You don't want to be someone who's propagating the outbreak. You want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem."

Man taunts employees after refusing to wear mask inside store

A man was caught on video screaming at employees at a dollar store after refusing to properly wear a face covering.

In the video, an employee can be heard saying, "Put your mask on." The man replies, "No. I can't breathe. I have asthma." The employee says, "Yeah? So do I," and the man responds, "I don't care about you."

The man was carrying a large umbrella and started waving it around as he grew more agitated.

"I don't have no (expletive) virus," he said.

About a minute into the video, the employee threatens to call the police.

"Better call the police," the man said. "Better call Governor Murphy."

[Shoppers] were baffled, shocked, since the man had the mask around his neck.

According to the CDC, people with moderate to severe asthma are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19 and are advised to wear masks in public.

World's largest movie theater chain will reopen another 140 theaters by Friday

AMC said that 70% of its theaters — or 420 total — will be open by this weekend, including the first AMC theater in San Diego, California.

Major theater chains are attempting to reopen during the pandemic, but it’s difficult to entice audiences to return to theaters without a new major blockbuster to sell tickets.

Covid-19 cases in US children have increased 17% over two weeks, report says

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic through Aug. 27, there have been more than 476,000 cases in children, according to an updated report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.

The report looks at publicly reported data from 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

Children represented 9.5% of all cases, and there is an overall rate of 631 cases per 100,000 children in the population. Both of these numbers have increased since the previous report on Aug. 20, when children represented 9.3% of all cases and the overall rate with 583 cases per 100,000 children in the population.

There were 70,330 new child cases reported since Aug. 13— that’s a 17% increase in child cases over two weeks.

Of the nine states that reported testing, children make up between 4% and 13.3% of all tests. Between 2.8% and 17.4% of tested children were positive for Covid-19.

The countries that have put up millions to fund the vaccines either by up front funding or up front purchase will clearly have first dibs. WHO should concentrate on those countries that cannot afford to purchase up front IMO.

There are other avenues for the U.S. to work internationally, see quote below from the Forbes article that was posted.

"The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China," said Judd Deere, a spokesman for the White House.

U.S. Won’t Join Global Coronavirus Vaccine Effort Because It’s Led By The WHO

From the results in Phase II of the Oxford trials, they had a good immune result so I think they have a good idea whether it will work. They have already started phase 3 in Brazil and the US. I am sure it is the same with the other top vaccine candidates too.

It is a question of science and not politics.

Lots of interest in the AstraZeneca trial now in the U.S., and here in Ohio at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center.

Ok so they would test when they go from online to in person, presumably IMO.

Better test before. Who is going to test? My concept of school testing is that it would be done all at one time. I cannot see daily testing in a school situation. Online students can change to hybrid or regular school when they choose.

I agree, it depends on state, and often it depends on the school district itself. In our region of the state, different school districts are offering and implementing different options for students.

I thought he was saying 2021 for a vaccine. Now he says this year. That's good. Maybe by the end of this month we will have a date. Ideally NH countries need it in October to have a chance of vaccinating populations before the winter.

Ok. Can they swop back and forth between online and in person as often as they wish?

Looks like so many districts are having problems with "Online Education". Good grief, this isn't like they didn't have all summer to get this organized! If I was a parent, I would just ditch school and go with Khan Academy.

I was also extremely disturbed reports of teachers who were peering into students homes, via Webcam and contacting the police or CPS based on observations. WTH?! A teacher saw a few BB guns on the wall in a child's room, and the police showed up! BB guns?!

Respectfully I must disagree. I say that as I seriously do have great respect for your insight and contributions to these threads.
I saw the picture of the room in the article and I would have been alarmed also seeing this in the background of a virtual class. Fortunately, it was investigated and resolved as harmless and no official charges/complaints.
I would much rather have engaged teachers during this time, when so much goes on inside of a child's home and they aren't being in school in person for school officials to assess their well being, rather than teachers that overlook or are so disengaged that they don't notice potential dangers.
I really, really worry about children not having school as a safety net. That being said, I'm not in favor of in person classrooms at this point in time either. Such a dilemma
