CNN: Restaurant dining linked to Covid-19 risk in CDC study - CNN

Adults who tested positive for Covid-19 were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant in the 14 days before becoming ill than those who tested negative, according to a new study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Link to full CDC study:

Community and Close Contact Exposures Associated with COVID-19 ...

Quoted summary section:
What is already known about the topic?

Community and close contact exposures contribute to the spread of COVID-19.

What is added by this report?

Findings from a case-control investigation of symptomatic outpatients from 11 U.S. health care facilities found that close contact with persons with known COVID-19 or going to locations that offer on-site eating and drinking options were associated with COVID-19 positivity. Adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than were those with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results.

What are the implications for public health practice?

Eating and drinking on-site at locations that offer such options might be important risk factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Efforts to reduce possible exposures where mask use and social distancing are difficult to maintain, such as when eating and drinking, should be considered to protect customers, employees, and communities.

I bet that they will just fly down to Florida. And social distance, wear masks, and after the winter, they will fly back to Canada, and quarantine for 2 weeks.

It doesn't seem so at this point. Perhaps when the first snow falls things will change. The health risks are too high, they can't get insurance, and there is a general distrust of the whole situation in Florida.

Air Canada promoting ‘leisure’ travel to U.S. despite advisories warning against non-essential trips

I have a Colorado (Aussie) friend who is still going to go in their RV to Texas for the winter. Despite Texas still being in bad circumstances.

It surprised the heck out of me that they are still going. She absolutely knows how bad things are, posts about it a lot. But is still leaving their warm, insulated home in Colorado to RV in Texas.

I think they usually go to the Galveston area, and I dont think it is quite as bad there.

I guess we are starting to get a vaccination plan together, at least in the hardest hit city.

Mass vaccination sites are set to open across the City of Melbourne as the Andrews government looks at upskilling health workers to ensure there are enough staff to administer a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Australian College of Nursing is lobbying the federal government for funding to train an additional 10,000 immunisers and upskill a further 50,000 to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine.

If all goes to plan, vulnerable Australians and frontline healthcare workers will be able to access 3.8 million doses of the vaccine from January and February.

Australia remains awesome. Yeah. We aren't down to the granular level of having nationwide personnel to administer a vaccine...or even testing.

If your vaccine was calculated to the the AZ (Oxford) vaccine, it may be delayed a bit - but there are others. If Australia is ready for rapid implementation (which should always be the first step), they will have their choice of vetted vaccines. Cost may go up higher than anticipated but at this point would be insignificant compared to the alternatives.

Yes, they will close. We get -40C (-40F) in this part of N. Ontario. People would die if they stayed in their summer homes. The need for winter housing has created a crisis.
Wow, I had no idea. Every six months you have to move from one to the other - year after year. Sounds like a dire situation. :(

Really, people can "Social Distance" just as easily in Florida. Shop contactless, use Instacart. Many of the older Canadians who served in the military during WW II use VA health care in Florida. Allied forces eligibility.

Hehe, well it's not something I would do, but yes, one million retired Canicks do this every year.
Lots of them in Asia too. Rent and the cost of living is low.

Not good news. Las Vegas... And we are to believe the economy is improving???

The entertainment mecca of the Strip, which attracted 49.5 million people in 2019 from around the world is neglected and deserted.

The daytime pool parties and nightclubs are just a memory. Shows are closed. Even Vegas’s ubiquitous strip joints are no more. The reality is that some casinos may never reopen. The Las Vegas Business Bureau estimates 40 per cent of restaurants may permanently fail.

Big Ten presidents reportedly to discuss starting football

I thought these two articles belong together- "College big ten presidents will discuss starting football, maybe in October"

You can come to your own conclusions

"The New York Times has been tracking COVID at colleges and universities nationwide, and they're reporting more than 51,000 cases at more than 1,000 schools."

The actual NY Times article (which can be accessed by signing up for a free account) states that 88,000 cases and 60 deaths have occurred among 1,600 colleges and universities since the pandemic began.
Most of the deaths are staff who passed away in Spring, and not students.

The sign-up-free article also has an interactive map of the schools they have been tracking and the case numbers at each college/university.

I found myself laughing at the idea of the statue of Liberty wearing a mask- and then i put my hand over my mouth at the awfulness and sadness of the situation. When you see those before and after photos of Vegas before the Pandemic and after-- it really would be better for Vegas to stop pretending they can have anything that approximates normal--- it will be at least a year or longer- when a vaccine finally becomes available that Vegas can go back to being itself.

Yes, an economist thinks this about Las Vegas:

He says an economic recovery will take, at best, 18 months, and at the longest 36 months after a vaccine comes on the market.
The more realistic time is two years and will depend on the world, national, and regional economic health.

Who said the economy of Las Vegas was improving?

I understood that post as Trino speaking of reports about the general economy, while pointing out the situation in Las Vegas as an example of improvement not happening (everywhere)?

U.S. economy is improving ...
The U.S. labor market and broader economy made some gains this week ....
However, the economy is nowhere near to rounding the corner to recovery.
U.S. economy is improving, weeks before the election.

It is pretty sad and depressing but the upside is that it is clear people are staying away because they know it is not safe to be in crowds, casinos and other venues in Vegas.
