We do the same in Ohio. Over 20 cases I know of didn't have to be tested again. I do know of a few cases that had to get a negative result before returning to work due to company rules.

We follow CDC guidelines at Ohio universities as well. No testing necessary after meeting CDC guidelines. You don't need a negative test to return to class or work.

While you are looking that up, I'll bore everyone by telling them how the Public Health systems works here (Ontario/Canada) and similarly throughout the other provinces.

The province is divided into regions, each with an office of the Public Health Unit. This organisation is at arms length from your doctor, or the hospitals, and works only with Public Health issues. They manage contagious disease, vaccination programs, restaurant inspections, well baby checkups, drug addition, research, health education, injury prevention, lab services, etc. It is publicly funded, although it offers some services for a fee.

If I were to have a positive Covid test, this information, being a reportable disease, would be given to the Public Health Unit. Within one day, they would follow up by providing instructions for self care, isolation, and support. An officer will also immediately begin contact tracing and testing. The unit will also supervise the quarantine period by calling/checking several times a day to make sure you are at home and that your symptoms haven't worsened.

At the end of the quarantine period, they would require another Covid test. Early in the pandemic, two negative tests were required before you were considered recovered, but now it might be only one.

The case data which they collect about you, (test results, age, sex, how you contacted Covid ) is reported to Health Canada, the federal arm of the Public Health system.

The Public Health Office is a Crown agency, an arms length agency of the federal government. It was established following the Influenza epidemic of 1918.

Us, too. If you have tested positive for covid, a negative test is required before you can come out of isolation.

If you are in self-isolation because you have had a COVID-19 test, you can leave self-isolation once you receive a negative result, however you should avoid contact with others while you are unwell.
If you test negative but have travelled, come into close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 or otherwise been directed to isolate/quarantine by the Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB), you are still required to isolate/quarantine until the end of your designated travel quarantine period, or CDCB advise you that you can be released.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/three-closures-toronto-public-health-1.5740438

Toronto Public Health has ordered three restaurants on King Street West to close to protect the public from COVID-19.

"These closure orders were undertaken based on Toronto Public Health investigations, including contact-tracing data, which has shown that each establishment has not taken the necessary steps to sufficiently protect both the public and employees from the spread of COVID-19," the news release said.

[...]

Once the restaurants comply with public health orders that will allow them to reopen safely, they will be allowed to resume business, she said.

"We look forward to the resolution of these matters and hope that the businesses involved will comply with all the actions required to lift the orders and allow them to return to operation in a safe manner that sustains public health," de Villa said.

Autumn is such a beautiful season, there is still so much to enjoy every day for the rest of 2020.
Absolutely agree. We've spent most of the weekend out in the woods cutting new trails. The leaves are turning and it's so beautiful it practically takes your breath away. I'm thinking about ordering some 'Covid' tents. Maybe have a socially distanced family camp out.

Good on the UK, if they can make this happen. It might be the way forward for everyone for a while.

Boris Johnson's Government is aiming to achieve 10 million tests a day by early next year.

"That level of tests would allow people to lead more normal lives without the need for social distancing," Mr Johnson said when announcing the strategy in early September.

Under the plan, some test results would be available in as little as 20 minutes.

"Theatres and sports venues could test all audience members ... and let in all those with a negative result," the Prime Minister said.

"Workplaces could be opened up to all those who test negative in the morning, to behave in a way that was exactly as in the world before COVID-19."

Crazy or ambitious? The UK's $180 billion plan to live freely — even without a vaccine

I think this is what he calls Operation Moonshot.

I received an email today from my 84 year old cousin on the east coast near D.C. who is en route to her summer cottage in New England and will visit two people on the way. She will be there until mid-October and have six visitors overlapping each other from various states during that time before she closes up the cottage for the winter. She did the same thing in June when she opened it up. On the way home, she hopes to attend her high school class reunion unless it’s canceled “for lack of enough participation.”

My husband talked me out of saying to her “Oh, has the pandemic been canceled on the east coast? It’s still on here in Oregon.” <modsnip> I’m ten years younger and I can’t imagine doing this. She’s very much an almost obsessive creature of habit and has been following this routine with the cottage for decades, so I guess she won’t alter it for a mere pandemic or delegate the job to one of her kids (in their 50’s). I just hope everyone involved stays safe.

Even though my state is more or less open, we still have a mask mandate. Your state didn't keep a mandate? I can't remember if you had one or not. Jmo

Guv wouldn't issue a State-wide, but most jurisdictions instituted mask mandates. We have them at the city and county levels, where we saw no masks. The change seems to be that people are only wearing them because an establishment says so. If one was to ask people "why are you wearing a mask," I suspect very few would sound like Fauci. The people I talk to, out in the world, all say one thing: "I am soooo done with this."

I had to shake my head during the Panther's game today when the coach lifted his face shield to scream at someone, and then put it back down when he was alone.

Amazing story, like reading a disaster novel. Thanks for posting.
We attended the San Antonio rodeo mid-late Feb (scheduled again in 2021). We did not get sick, but it makes me wonder about others. Loads of people. Huge event.

I don't blame her for wanting to get out of DC and head for New England. Beautiful time of year to be there. She must be a very independent and healthy 84 year old.

Just an addem re: San Antonio Rodeo
Scheduled in 5 months Feb 18 - 28 2021. Note that Texas (and San Antonio) have extremely high coronavirus cases. The rodeo events are INDOORS at the ATT Center. Texas ordinance currently limits indoor attendance to 50% of capacity. And, there's an outside part to this event - think state fair with lots of booths, food. How's this gonna work?

2019 attendance:
Rainy and inclement weather caused attendance on the grounds to be down slightly from the previous two years, but it was still a very healthy count of over 1.9 million guests.

My state just has guidelines. Let me look. I'll get you a link if I can find it. :)

Here we go. We use CDC guidelines.

Persons with COVID-19 who have symptoms and were directed to care for themselves at home may discontinue isolation under the following conditions:

  • At least 10 days* have passed since symptom onset and
  • At least 24 hours have passed since resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and
  • Other symptoms have improved.
*A limited number of persons with severe illness may produce replication-competent virus beyond 10 days, that may warrant extending duration of isolation for up to 20 days after symptom onset. Consider consultation with infection control experts.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Thank you, this is helpful. I'm still trying to figure out how this works, so I have a couple more questions. Is it left up to the individual to determine when symptoms have passed, or is a local public health officer involved in the process? Does the Public Health officer have any authority to place a person in isolation, or close an establishment that flaunts the recommendations?

Ita- horrible consequences for these vets & their families. Still uncharted waters legally though. Many details not known. If that severely understaffed, not sure what other options they had? Transfer- but where? Keep separate- but still risk negligent care? Seems between a rock & a hard place. Idk. Needs its own thread!

I agree...needs its own thread. The unchartered waters that hit the Mid Atlantic states is not comparable to any area of the country.

Surely the vaccine will be rolled out by/before February I hope. Even Dr.Fauci estimates end of the year IIRC.

Actually he even said October in this article.

It wasn't just those states though all states had problems. Many countries also had problems. 42% of US deaths and 80% of Canadian deaths.
