Dozens exposed, 9 test positive in COVID-19 cluster in Oneida County

“The church and the coach of the football team, which practices at the Northern Community Sports Complex in Holland Patent, have refused to cooperate with the county’s investigation, Ellis said. Instead of providing health department workers with a list of names, they referred them to their lawyers, she said.

The nine cases include six people in family A, the parents, three children and an adult child who gives music lessons both for a nonprofit agency and at the church. The other cases include a co-worker of the music teacher, her spouse and a child from a third family who caught it from carpooling, according to the diagram.

Those patients did many activities during which they could potentially have spread the coronavirus, including a birthday party, a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles office, visiting a doctor’s office, having a sleepover, going to school and going to soccer practice.

Adult one and his wife also took a trip to New York City after he was symptomatic, leaving the children with a babysitter, who has since tested negative, Ellis said.”

I believe there are some state laws that criminalize HIV spread. Why not coronavirus?

I am saying that Dr. Fauci's comments are internally inconsistent. He specifically says “We’re not talking about shutting down anything,” and then goes on to recite a litany of conditions and behaviors that effectively "shut down" everything I listed. I assume he and I have different definitions of "anything" when it comes to shut downs.

Yes, likely different definitions. I think Dr Fauci prefers behaviour modification and limits, over shutting down.

Unfortunately, it seems that behaviour modification and limits, during a pandemic, is something that is a big struggle for many - without adequate ongoing govt financial support.
Hence all the shut downs, for attempted disease control, which are likely even more economically damaging.

IMO

I’ve been hearing the same. And I tell them “yes I personally know people who have died.”

An aside: My surgical nurse neighbor is currently isolated due to work exposure early this week.

That still doesn’t stop the “flu kills more” or “it’s not that many” ...

My main culprit is my MIL who now refuses to wear a mask and is pushing every boundary. (She seriously thinks she will get a holiday invite?! Ha!)

anyway I just sent her this as a reminder that it is still a problem in her community. She shops st the grocery right next door...
For some reason, she believes she’s too special to get it. I mean she’s 70+ with hypertension, high cholesterol, surely she’s immune.

Update: 57 coronavirus cases reported at Countryside Manor; one new death in county

back to lurking... thanks everyone for all your info and thoughts.
I know someone who is on a ventilator right now. I've known her my whole life. If she dies, this will be the second death in the tiny village I grew up in. I don’t recall ever having flu deaths there, much less multiple ones within weeks of each other. I fear that's what is coming, though.

Hope Hicks, one of President Donald Trump's closest advisers, has tested positive for the coronavirus, ABC News has confirmed.

Hicks, who serves as counselor to the president and is among a tight group of advisers to the president, tested positive this week after traveling with the president on Tuesday to and from the first presidential debate on Air Force One.

Hicks was also on Marine One, the president's helicopter, when it left the White House to fly to Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday.

"The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously," White House spokesperson Judd Deere told ABC News Thursday night. "White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling."

Now this reminds me of something I saw the other day, check this out (note some aren’t wearing masks):

The “talking heads” are sitting so closely and talking in such an animated fashion (sans masks) I worry for their safety. At least the tourists in the ferry were out of doors.

I’ve seen more mask slackers lately myself usually in the form of wearing the mask below their nose. What will things look like as we go into the winter? It worries me we will have mask fatigue.

But the masks will keep our noses warm. Extra bonus, no one will see how red our noses are, plus the masks will catch all the drips. Ewh.

On the other hand, they'll probably freeze to our faces.

Maybe we need to start talking about some winter mask ideas.

I am so glad you brought up the “nose” thing, I have been meaning to do so myself. You may have seen my above posts re: the latest mutation in Israel that supposedly has a higher “virus load” in the naso...

All these months it has been bugging the crap out of me seeing all these “exposed noses” on TV...I haven’t looked into or heard about what the deal is exactly with exposed noses wrt to aerosol transmission or respiratory droplets...anyone? @10ofRods @dixiegirl1035

I’m personally looking forward to being able to wear a scarf. Over my mask (s). Otherwise I’d prefer to hibernate all winter at home. It’s going to be bad imo.

I think mask fatigue is setting in already. A friend of mine (NY state) said just this week that he is getting really tired of wearing a mask. I said that I hoped he would settle into it and keep it up because this thing is not over by a long shot.

IMO

Lots of scenarios about current situations, but what is the solution? How do we (US) get past the virus? Do we go back an shut down? What should be our masks expectations? Do we wait for a vaccine, which now could be late 2021? Should we criminalize certain behaviors which are spreading the virus? What? What are we to do?

Natick schools to fine families $300 for lying on COVID-19 health forms
More at link
After students were found partying, Natick Public Schools are issuing new fines in attempt to keep students safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Fines of $300 will be given to families from Natick Public Schools who don’t truthfully fill out a daily health form saying their children don’t have COVID-19 symptoms or haven’t come into contact with anyone that might have the virus, the Tauton Daily Gazette reported.

(Eta: As in talkin to you, and gesture as in, “I hear ya gf, and also...”.
And yes I agree it could be bad, on many levels, as I’ve already stated. Jmo)

Back in July my son got married. We social distanced outdoors and wore masks when closer than 6 feet. Looking back a month later I thought about how no one came down with Covid and we would've been safe without the social distancing and masks. I still wouldn't take the risk but how many after 7 months are thinking the same thing but willing to take the risk now?

I just look on the bright side with the mask thing. There are really cute and/or pretty ones out there and I enjoy matching them to my outfits. My attitude rubs off on others to a degree.

Interesting article about this subject ... and if you read it in total you will see that it is based on the pandemic lasting through 2021 and perhaps beyond.

“The future will very much depend on how much social mixing resumes, and what kind of prevention we do,” says Joseph Wu, a disease modeller at the University of Hong Kong. Recent models and evidence from successful lockdowns suggest that behavioural changes can reduce the spread of COVID-19 if most, but not necessarily all, people comply.

Early evidence suggests that personal behavioural changes, such as hand-washing and wearing masks, are persisting beyond strict lockdown, helping to stem the tide of infections.

The team concluded that if 50–65% of people are cautious in public, then stepping down social-distancing measures every 80 days could help to prevent further infection peaks over the next two years. “We’re going to need to change the culture of how we interact with other people”

The team concluded that contact tracing must be rapid and extensive — tracing 80% of contacts within a few days — to control an outbreak.

The pandemic’s course next year will depend greatly on the arrival of a vaccine, and on how long the immune system stays protective after vaccination or recovery from infection.

How the pandemic might play out in 2021 and beyond

Your masks are beautiful, JE. I saw pics you posted on the mask thread.

There was an article yesterday where young Koreans are buying up designer masks. This designer sold 500 in one week. He usually designs and makes tuxedos, but decided to start designing and making masks as well - in the hopes that the younger set would leave the surgical masks for the more vulnerable older people.
