You guys should be proud. You've had 904 deaths, compared to TX, at 17,500, with the same population number.

It's really astonishing.

United States Coronavirus: 8,282,670 Cases and 223,580 Deaths - Worldometer

Victoria has actually had 816 deaths. The 904 is for the whole of Australia.
(ETA: Sorry, I see that TX has the population of all of Australia. So yes, your comparison is spot on :) )

The other 7 states, combined, have had 88 deaths.
And three of those 7 states have actually had no covid deaths at all.

No problem! I should have been more clear about what I was comparing. All of Oz head to head with all of TX. :)

No, nothing like that has happened here. If we need food, we go to the grocery store. If we need money, we go to the bank. If we need dog food, we go to the pet store. If we need prescriptions, we go to the pharmacy. If we need fuel, we go to the gas station. If we want to visit friends, we visit friends. Etc. None of our "activities of daily living" have ever been restricted.

We do (in my area) go into "lockdown" periodically during hurricanes, but we have never done that for covid. Not even remotely close.

The entire world has been effected by Covid-19, some more than others. I feel like the elderly and kids have suffered the most and they are the ones who are complaining the least.

Trump strikes coronavirus vaccine deal for CVS, Walgreens to give shots to seniors

The Trump administration on Friday unveiled a deal with CVS and Walgreens to administer a future coronavirus vaccine to nursing home residents and staff free of cost.

Under the plan introduced by the Department of Health and Human Services, trained staff from the two national pharmacy chains would deliver the vaccines to nursing homes and administer the shots. The vaccine would also be available for free to residents in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, adult family homes and residential care homes.

Minnesota and Rallies

The Minnesota Department of Health said it has so far traced 20 cases of Covid-19 back to a rally held by President Trump in Bemidji last month, or to related events.

Of the 20 cases, 16 are among people who attended the rally, including two who are now hospitalized. Four people said they participated in counter-protests that same day, the state department of health told CNN. The state is describing it as an “outbreak.”

That's really great, but disturbing at the same time. Are our nursing homes really so badly managed/staffed that they cannot even vaccinate their own residents and need others to come in and do it for them? If so, by all means have CVS come and do it. But that is one sorry state of affairs. jmo

Does one have to preplan groceries for that 14 day period? How does that work?
Our grocery store will shop for you and deliver. Used to be just for homebound seniors, but the service has now opened up to anyone. There is a small fee, of course.

It's not just needed for quarantine after travel, if you get any symptoms or have been exposed by close contact, you'll have to stay home from that point, not go out and do a big supply run first.

True. The video I posted earlier - by Médecins Sans Frontières - certainly had at least one registered nurse in it, in the one nursing home they were in. As well as aides.

But they did say that they were understaffed and really struggled to cope with the demands of the virus.

The widely diverse response across the world to these outbreaks is so fascinating. An outbreak of 20 cases in China = immediate testing of an entire city of 10 million. An outbreak of 20 cases in the US = crickets.

I hope somebody does a study on the wildly disparate responses of different societies. I would love to know what exactly is behind that. jmo

Good grief.

I hear you. But would you admit your mother or father to a nursing home that could not provide something so simple as a vaccination? That is completely unacceptable, in my view. Our elders deserve much better than that. It's appalling, honestly. jmo

What the....

The US military reported 1202 new cases today.

United States Coronavirus: 8,284,301 Cases and 223,605 Deaths - Worldometer

And Illinois has gone completely off the rails with 5,103 new cases today.

I see those figures! I'm gobsmacked.

Illinois...is a fairly literate place. People surely know what CoVid is. No one I know still lives there though, they've all moved to one of the coasts.

The US military is...well, embarrassing, what with their infections of other nation's armed forces. Tacky, not tactical.

Anyway, the situation in Illinois is very concerning. With about 30% of the population of California, it has about twice as many cases.

(California has managed to get more recorded cases today - but Illinois and other states have more per capita; California's deaths are roughly the same as Illinois's)

Georgia surpasses both states in cases per capita for today. George has 1/4th the population of California - and more deaths).

Sununu puts indoor hockey, skating on ice for two weeks

“The governor’s decision received mixed reaction on social media.

“My kids are forced to stay home from school as a direct result. They don’t play hockey but a kiddo who did was on their bus... now we’re home schooling for 2 weeks,” Kristen Baker Milks posted on Facebook.

Nicole Sullivan said it was a shame.

“This just took away a small slice of normalcy for so many kids in this state. I am so sad for the kids and their programs who followed the rules. My son dresses in the parking lot or at home, wears a mask on and off ice, we fill out an info form every time anyone enters the rink, but here we are because a few people got greedy and couldn’t follow the rules,” Sullivan posted. “Shame on those people for robbing our children of a sport that they love. I truly hope this only lasts two weeks and our kids can return to the ice.”

Laura Condon of Bedford said the fear is overblown.

“Yet no one is actually sick. Enough with the hysteria. Let these youths get back to life and living,” she posted.”

Yeah, I was seriously alarmed to see IL's number. I haven't done the deep dive and don't know what is going on there, but what the actual heck?

I have a sinking feeling that the southern US is soon to follow the north in new cases within the next week or two. Predictions of 100,000 US cases per day is likely an accurate estimate. We're already at 70,000 new cases today.

How many know what exactly goes on in those nursing homes? There are probably some good facilities- but I can tell you about the unacceptable treatment my relatives have received in various facilities. A spokesperson needs to be there 24/7 to be sure things are done and done correctly. A real eye opener.
They don’t pay the aides enough and they don’t have enough staff. It’s about money and not compassion. JMO
