Re Thanksgiving
The day before TDay is also the busiest travel day in the US iirc.
Numerous news vids this morning about already crowded airports, people not changing plans and doing their thing are too depressing to watch (many people take this as a vacation week so are already on the move)
“I gottttttta see my family”. Yah me too. On a more long term basis. The selfishness .. i just can’t comprehend it.
I personally know of about a dozen people, from 3 different families, who are travelling by plane or car, to other states to celebrate Thanksgiving.

In each case, their stated reason was: they already paid for the accommodations and can't get a refund.

And, since they'll be with family members, and the virus is already "everywhere" it doesn't matter WHERE they go, even if it's Florida! LOL

I have a question: does anyone know how long it would take a vaccine for this virus to become effective. I have never had any vaccine so I don't know if this particular vaccine would act like, for example, the flu vaccine as far as how long it takes to become effective.

Oh my gosh. Most of the hotel chain only require 24-48 hour cancellation notice.
And you if you can’t get your money back for the flight - you get a credit that you can use later. For up to a year later. You know, for when it’s not so dangerous?

Unless everyone is staying at a Airbnb that the owners don’t allow cancellations?
Even with a week or two notice?

And.....it’s not like Covid suddenly appeared.

I think they’re going because they are Covid nonbelievers and aren’t going to change a dang thing about their life.

People are just burned out on Covid it seems like. They just seem to have minimized it, and normalized it, to the point that "It is just "flu"." Has become the new mantra around here.....RSBM
I think that's exactly right. Despite the surging volume of cases, I don't see the panic factor in my community. It could be that a vaccine is on the way or it could be that we're simply "used to it" by now. However, I feel like I see fewer news reports and less anecdotal evidence about the death factor. For example, we've had several reports over the past 60 days about politicians and their advisors who test positive for COVID. Some of them are elderly, some of them are obese and some have complicating factors but none, to my recollection, have died (not complaining here). I feel like there have been dozens if not hundreds of NFL and college players and coaches that have tested positive yet they are back on the playing field in two weeks. Granted, they are young and fit but I think their cases color our perception. Nobody I know says, "Oh ^*&$$, my favorite QB has COVID, I hope he doesn't die" - they say "Oh no, he's on my fantasy football team, how many weeks is he going to miss - one or two?" Don't get me wrong, I'm not hoping for celebrity or political deaths, but I think that the case and death statistics alone have bored many and been lost on most.

At 20:50 into overnight video, Dr. Campbell also speaks to the interpretations/facts on Remdesivir as a follow up to above post.

As always, he has short bullet notes under the video...

Conditional recommendation against the use of remdesivir in hospitalized patients . Regardless of disease severity Currently no evidence that remdesivir improves survival and other outcomes Guideline, developed by international guideline development group 28 clinical care experts, 4 patient-partners, one ethicist Match scientific standards with the speed required to respond to an ongoing pandemic WHO Solidarity Trial, 3 other randomized controlled trials N = 7000 Insufficient evidence of an important effect on: Mortality Need for mechanical ventilation Time to clinical improvement Other patient-important outcomes Supported continued enrollment in trials evaluating remdesivir. A conditional recommendation When the evidence around the benefits and risks of an intervention are less certain

In this case, there is a conditional recommendation against the use of remdesivir This means that there isn’t enough evidence to support its use. US pharmaceutical company Gilead Disputes the findings WHO's findings were yet to be subjected to peer review Remdesivir is currently approved for use as a COVID-19 in over 50 countries Cost https://www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m... A treatment cycle may take 5-10 days A five day course of treatment for one patient costs around $2340 (£1773; €1976) for government programmes $3120 for private insurers Gilead has reached agreements to make cheaper generic versions available in low and middle income countries (Tamiflu costs less than $75 per course of treatment to shorten symptom duration for patients with influenza)

I have come to believe that there are a lot of people, (aside from people who think it's an infringement on their freedom to wear masks, or think it's a hoax, or think not wearing a mask makes them loyal to President Trump), who are taking risks outside the guidelines and recommendations, and justifying it to themselves and anyone who will listen

After seeing footage of airports on the news, and granted, people have masks on, but there is no pretense of social distancing or 6 feet apart, and people interviewed say they are following all safety precautions

Makes me feel like I'm living under a rock
Or unaware, uninformed, eyes shut, hermity
(Yes I am on that last one);)

I thought the reports of large rally type gatherings, or weddings, etc, were outliers

Now I think I am the outlier:/

The > 90%-95% effectiveness for both were 7 days iirc after the second dosage... for which one vaccine was 21 days after first dose and 28 days after second IIRC

To my knowledge, the information hasn't been released as to what the levels were interim as IIRC they only collected blood samples when they went to get the second dosage... not during.

Early studies showed that IgM were good in 5 days, and IgG were good at <9-10 with natural infections (and these vaccines are creating a MUCH higher antibody/immune response).. but that would take too much digging to find, sorry. Perhaps someone else can find.

EPD: Woman removed from Eureka Costco after refusing to wear a mask

“At around 1:15 p.m. employees at the store on Wabash Avenue called to report a woman refusing to wear a mask who "strong armed" a cell phone from an employee, police said.”

“In the video, the woman can be heard saying, "There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to shop without a mask on," to which Peggy replies, "Haven't you heard about the virus?"“

Disgusting. “No reason“, eh?

Political commentator Rachel Maddow returned to her show on MSNBC tonight, broadcasting from home without makeup, wearing glasses and managing (“McGyvering”) her own mic and earpiece. She had been gone for two weeks in isolation because “someone close to her” had tested positive (Rachel has continued to test negative). It turned out to be her longtime partner Susan Mikula who was very ill and almost died while they stayed apart. After an emotional explanation Rachel said:

"Whatever you think of your own life and however much risk you are willing to take on for yourself, that's not how this works," she said. "What you need to know is that whoever is the most important person in your life, whoever you most love and most care for and most cherish in the world, that's the person who you may lose or who you may spend weeks up all night freaking out about and calling doctors all over the place and trying to figure out how to keep that person breathing and out of the hospital."

Maddow concluded: "This thing is scary as hell and whatever you've been willing to do to risk getting it, don't. Just don't do it. So that is what's been going on with me."

Just curious - is Thanksgiving more or less important/celebrated than Christmas?

I would say equal. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the most heavily travelled day of the year, and the Sunday after the second most travelled... more because Thanksgiving HOliday is more finite than Christmas. People spread their travelling over Christmas over many more days....

For the last 4 years we kept hearing how families had so much trouble getting together because of politics. This year it is because of Covid. I know of some, who were going to travel, but have changed their minds...due in part because of the skyrocketing numbers, and the CDC warning.

My most memorable Thanksgiving was spent in London with a whole bunch of family and expats!

“At around 1:15 p.m. employees at the store on Wabash Avenue called to report a woman refusing to wear a mask who "strong armed" a cell phone from an employee, police said.”

Here is the "Catch 22" retail employees face, 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week...they are told by management to wear a mask, and not engage or enforce "mask mandate" with customers who are not wearing a mask. Then, other mask wearing customers, go to store clerks, expecting the clerk, to "enforce" mask wearing on "non mask" customers.

It is non stop "preschool management" with supposed adults, who don't think that rules apply to them. And these people are not normal, they WANT a confrontation. They are primed and ready to escalate it. That is the problem.

Solution? At least for my daughter, I told her to just call the manager to deal with it. And last week, fortunately, unfortunately, she was promoted...to manager!

The WHO and NIH disagree about Remdesivir which I think is alarming.

UK, Europe have approved it and the USA has only approved it for emergency use. It was used on Trump (however one feels about him is not important here IMO),

Dr. Andre Kalil, a University of Nebraska infectious disease specialist who helped lead the U.S. remdesivir study, said the WHO one was poorly designed, which makes its conclusions less reliable. Patients and doctors knew what treatment they were using, there was no placebo infusion to help avoid biased reporting of risks or benefits, there was little information about the severity of patients’ symptoms when treatments began and a lot of missing data, he said.

WHO study finds remdesivir didn't help COVID-19 patients

When I read this article I was alarmed by the emphasis that they placed on the drug cost instead of whether the drug works. The entire population of the world is not going to die from Covid prior to the vaccine (at least).

Why not give it to the people (all over the world) that develop the virus?

Governments have a lot of purchasing power plus there are people like Bill Gates and Bill Clinton. Those 2 helped to bring down the cost of HIV drugs to a very low cost. There are foundations and the WHO that could help fund it.

America is about to change administrations and no one knows whether the FDA will decide that it can't be administered in the USA.

I am not blaming anyone at all. I am just very concerned.

And I believe the FDA or CDC has been more favorable about Remdesivir........... however, the US co-owns all the product, so it appears to be more about sales than outcomes......

Coronavirus: US buys nearly all of Gilead's Covid-19 drug remdesivir

Jack said to Rose "The ship is gonna suck us down. Take a deep breath when I say it. Keep looking for the surface. Keep kicking..."

I feel like we are at that moment. Unimaginable tragedy awaits us all shortly. Too many people are not heeding the warnings. For Titanic, help arrived too late. Too many lives were lost already.:(

anything about Jack and Rose just makes me sadder.................

Regeneron was just approved on Saturday 11/21/2018 in the USA for emergency treatment,

FDA authorizes use of Regeneron's antibody cocktail given to Trump to treat Covid-19 - CNN

This is my most concerning issue:

"Unlike some other drugs used for Covid-19, the antibody cocktail is meant to be given early in infection, before patients are hospitalized or require oxygen therapy. The drug should be given as soon as possible after a positive viral test, according to the FDA."

You also have to be over 12, have a high BMI, age risk or underlying condition that makes you high risk.

In Ohio, we are NOT getting the test results for 5 - 7 days. A patient would most likely be in the hospital (in Ohio) before we knew if we are positive or not. At that point, we wouldn't qualify for the treatment.

I had a family friend that died in less than a week. We have a church friend that went into the hospital last night and she certainly didn't know about her diagnosis last week.

My healthy son and DIL survived this last week but went downhill (he did) on Day 5.

America is about to change administrations and no one knows whether the FDA will decide that it can't be administered in the USA.

I am not blaming anyone at all. I am just very concerned.

Our church friend will 'most likely' die from this but she can't get the drug because the diagnosis just came back.

Each of your sentences just made me more and more sad.............
I think a large part of the US population is just doing anything to "avoid" knowing these things.............
How they can say it is just the flu....just baffles me.

We have a long way, before we are going to know why some get such severe cases, others moderate, mild, asymptomatic........ there are some molecular secrets out there... we are learning soooo much, but we have such a long way to go....

My first experience with the virus was from a couple on a cruise and they posted everyday from Japan. The man showed how to do lung exercises and I still do them.

Do you still have the link to those exercises? It might be wise for the rest of us to be doing them.
