Both Pfizer and Moderna, the two major drug manufacturers likely to receive emergency authorizations for a Covid-19 vaccine in the coming weeks, have rejected invitations from President Trump to appear at a White House “Vaccine Summit” on Tuesday, according to two sources familiar with the event’s planning.

The Trump administration has openly feuded with Pfizer in recent weeks over its involvement in Operation Warp Speed and the timing of a data release showing its vaccine to be highly effective, but had nonetheless invited CEO Albert Bourla to appear on a panel about the vaccine development process. Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel was also invited, but neither he nor another company executive will attend.

The vaccine manufacturers’ absences will be conspicuous at a “Vaccine Summit,” an event that drug industry figures and one Trump administration official largely viewed as a public relations stunt when STAT first reportedthe event last week.

The event appeared to be an effort for the administration to claim credit for the rapid development of a Covid-19 vaccine and to pressure the Food and Drug Administration to move quickly on an authorization. The agency’s commissioner, Stephen Hahn, was twice called to the White House to explain the FDA’s slower-than-desired timetable for issuing emergency use authorizations for Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines, Axios and Bloombergreported.

It doesnt *feel* like we have the second wave under control here. People are shopping like crazy, students are returning home (although offered lateral flow tests) and pubs in tier 2, who can only serve customers eating a substantial meal, are allowed to consider a sausage roll as such. Schools are closed all over my local area due to positive tests, or not enough teachers.

My elderly aunt who only yesterday was having oxygen for Covid, has been discharged today and told to call 999 if she gets worse. She will have carers and nurses, who will then visit other patients. She went in with a broken ankle last Saturday, sent home with Covid.

In my family in the last month, a nephew and cousin have tested positive (different areas) as well as my aunt. And we are in "lower" risk areas.

Sorry for the negativity, but I'm dreading to think what January will bring (and worried about my aunt).

So sorry to hear that your family is experiencing covid. I hope they all recover well - it is especially concerning for your elderly aunt.

Yes, I noticed that the article I linked didn't mention the UK.

It mentioned ...

- France has brought daily new cases from about 50,000 a day to roughly 10,000.
- Belgium had the worst infection rate in Europe ....... Now, it has the fifth lowest infection rate on the continent.
- Italian government announced an easing of restrictions in parts of the country, as coronavirus incidence rates dropped for the second consecutive week.

The article also said that Germany is doing really badly at the moment.

Official UK Coronavirus Dashboard

Our figures are heading in the right direction. It just worries me that we'll go backwards again. The estimated R between 0.8 and 1 is too fragile, not the right word but you know what I mean, with Christmas only weeks away.

ETA thanks, for your kind words and yes v worried for my aunt.

I’m so sorry about your aunt and other family who have tested positive @HongKongPhooey. It’s all very scary.

It is, not even close to home but it is home. As sure as we are that we had it, with the immunity uncertainty I dont feel at all protected myself either. Not so much worried for me, but for Mr HKP with his London train commute. The youngsters are fine btw. Very mild symptoms and back to normal. Taking it day by day with my aunt. She has several high risk factors but her symptoms had improved enough for them to let her go home so we shall see. She was desperate to go home. At least she is comfortable now.

Today my husband received an email from the local natural foods co-op we belong to notifying us that one of their checkers has tested positive for Covid. This employee last worked on Nov 29 and 30, so they are asking anyone who had close contact for more than 15 minutes (per CDC guidelines) to let them know. In the meantime, they have sanitized all touch areas. This is the ONE store my husband felt comfortable going to (double masked, gloved and goggled) because they strictly limit how many are allowed in at once, enforce the mask mandate and basically run a tight ship. Now we will have to assume other employees will test positive. The only positive is that he never is in close contact, let alone for 15 minutes or more. But still...we feel awful for the co-op.

The way the virus is spreading in our area, he has to assume that anyone he comes into contact with is contagious. I never go out, so his big concern is bringing it home to me.

Rebekah Jones, the former chief data scientist at Florida’s health department who said she was fired for refusing to manipulate Covid-19 data, said the police seized a computer she was using to publish a coronavirus data dashboard of her own.

“At 8:30 am this morning, state police came into my house and took all my hardware and tech,” she said on Twitter. “They were serving a warrant on my computer after [the health department] filed a complaint. They pointed a gun in my face. They pointed guns at my kids.”

Jones began publishing state coronavirus data updates on her own website after she was fired in May for refusing to “manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen”. Florida’s official site undercounts the infection total and overcounts the number of people who are tested, to minimize the severity of the pandemic in the state, she has said.

“They took my phone and the computer I use every day to post the case numbers in Florida, and school cases for the entire country.

Trump admin officials passed when Pfizer offered in late summer to sell the U.S. government additional doses of its vaccine. Now Pfizer may not be able provide more of its vaccine to the US until next June because of its commitments to other countries.
Covid-19 Live Updates: Trump Officials Passed When Pfizer Offered to Sell More Vaccine Doses in Late Summer

I just don't get this. How can the current administration contend that it was promoting the vaccination of the American public?

It seems as if the plan was to *not* buy sufficient vaccines for the American public but say that it was all under control. SMH.

The sudden lockdown, tight restrictions, introduction of QR codes everywhere has been worth it. Today we have returned to zero active covid cases.

South Australia will significantly ease its COVID-19 restrictions within days as the state returns to zero active cases.

Premier Steven Marshall congratulated South Australians for the “incredible” result and said the loosening of restrictions was well-earned.

“We stared down this cluster, we stared down this second wave ... now we’re all going to be the beneficiaries,” he said.

I'll distract you. What's a lateral flow test?

(I am pretty negative right now - don't get me started).

Gosh, these stats are all over the place - but seem to indicate out of control COVID in Iowa. Death rate is concerning (given the small population of Iowa). Case rate seems to be slowing. It is very difficult to explain, but it's the same in several smaller California counties - the entire reporting system is over-burdened and maybe, confused.

35 deaths is a lot. My county is ⅓ the population of of Iowa and had 1 death. I'm wondering if ICU bed availability is a factor. Plus, not all hospitals are using steroids and anticoagulants as effectively.

“North Carolina set another high in COVID-19 hospitalizations Monday, continuing a month-long increase, according to data reported by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

The state health department also reported 4,372 new cases Monday, bringing the 7-day daily average for new lab-confirmed cases to 4,979 cases. Of the state’s six highest daily new case numbers, five have been recorded in the past week.”

Sounds like China or Russia.

I'm not sure why that sounds not-doable to you. Fauci predicted all Americans would have the vaccine available perhaps even as soon as April, which is two months ahead of mid-2021.

I'm not a big Fauci fan but he probably can estimate a timeline, given this is his expertise.

Principal who was at work Friday died Sunday after COVID diagnosis, Texas school says
BURNET -- A Texas principal who tested positive for the coronavirus died two days after he was at school, officials say.

Burnet Middle School Principal Jeremy LeJeune went to work Friday and didn’t feel sick, officials say. But that changed over the weekend when he was hospitalized.

LeJeune suffered from a rare blood vessel disorder that had previously required hospital admissions, Superintendent Keith McBurnett said in a letter to students and families. Though he was asymptomatic, the hospital discovered LeJeune was positive for COVID-19 during the admission process, McBurnett said. By Sunday evening, LeJeune had died.

“It is likely that the virus exacerbated his condition,” McBurnett said.

Cuomo Warns NYC Indoor Dining Ban Could Start Next Monday

The governor said that if the hospitalization rate doesn’t stabilize in the next five days, the city’s restaurants will face new restrictions.
ooooooooooo

It’s JMO but restaurant dining seems like a high risk activity, even on a patio. Too much time is spent unmasked with others who are also unmasked. Too little distance separates different groups of unmasked diners. The activity of eating, drinking and chatting easily puts virions into the air. I will get takeout for now (maybe always.) MOO
