I just don't think CNN's position on this is as well-researched as the links I posted, which show that the vast majority of HCW's are in favor of the vaccine. You said "most of the nurses" you know are vaccine-adverse or hesitant and I don't disagree - I'm just saying that this is likely regional and that it is not true of all nurses everywhere.

I too know a lot of nurses and have been teaching a required course in the nursing school for 30 years...but I wouldn't base my views on the topic merely on what the nurses I know might say (naturally, a lot of the nurses I know are connected to a university, which is a different population).

I prefer to go with actual studies on the topic, and still see no evidence anywhere that "most" nurses or HCW's are unfavorable to the vaccine. We shall soon learn, I believe, whether HCW's in infectious disease wards and nursing homes will take the vaccine or not. There are so many variables that will affect the actual choices - what people say they'll do and what they actually do in future are almost always two different things.

If I ran a nursing home, I wouldn't want any LVN's or RN's working there (or other HCW's) unless they'd had the vaccine. Most states in the US are at will employment states, so I suspect that if a vaccine is required, many will take it. Anxiety over a vaccine is normal. But to conflate anxiety and talking about vaccines with the real behavior of people regarding vaccines is premature, IMO.

My employer requires a flu shot. If you did not get the flu shot, you had to wear a mask at all times at work. This started three years ago, before we all had to wear masks anyway.

Just to avoid the hassle, and look "different" everyone got a flu shot. I am not sure that an employer could actually let go of an employee who refused a vaccine. That opens up to a huge ADA issue.

Interesting, I just called our veterinarian, apparently they are not taking any animals in for boarding due to Covid and potential spread with animals.

Yeah, it is thought that minks and cats and some other animals can spread COVID (with or without symptoms - apparently the minks don't get symptoms?)

If mink can spread COVID without actually having COVID, that's not good. Can humans do this too? We call human spreaders without symptoms "asymptomatic" but it's been really hard to get good data on how many of these people there are, or how long they are spreading. We do know that if symptoms develop and then the immune system ramps up, in a short while, the person has few live/replicating virions.

While I intend to be vaccinated as soon as my place in line comes up, I am not sure that means I will be unable to transmit COVID. I am not sure about the minks, either (I don't think anyone knows for sure!)

Only if the person qualifies for ADA - which is an interesting question. The disability has to affect immunity/immunizations. I am a disabled person (technically, I have a placard, I fractured my back 15 years ago, it's led to a series of orthopedic issues that affect my mobility; it does not affect my immune system). My doctor is a good doct0r, there's no way he would tell my employer that I am unable to take a vaccine. My PCP wouldn't, either (she'd say the opposite; with my familial high ch0lesterol, I am at risk for a severe course of COVID, she would urge me to take the vaccine).

But yes, if an employee's doctor had communicated to one's workplace that they had a medical reason not to take the vaccine (keeping in mind that millions of medical fragile, elderly and immune-compromised will be taking the vaccine first) then an employee could file some kind of action with the feds (good luck with that though, because even people with bona fide issues are only entitled to reasonable accommodations). As a teacher (for example), we can't claim that it's reasonable that we never enter a classroom again because we are immune-compromised. They'd tell us to wear masks and they would build us a plexi-glass booth (and there are a couple of classrooms with stages completely shielded - they'd put us there and if we refused, we'd lose pay).

Employers can certainly let people go for refusing vaccines or tests (you can't just not teach and get paid; if you refuse a TB test, you can't go in the classroom, etc). We actually don't get much sick leave, so I've watched bone marrow transplant patients who are teachers take 6 months of unpaid leave in order to at least keep their health insurance, and then be required to return to the classroom - their doctors may support them being in a plexiglass booth, but they can't just stay home, not teach and receive a paycheck).

I have been a member of the adjudication panel for accommodations for about 10 years. It's been eye-opening. But airline pilots can't fly if they can't see, and teachers can't teach if they refuse to go into any kind of classroom (right now, most teachers who claim this kind of immune disability are required to teach online; however some disciplines do not prevent it and I'm watching a dear friend return to a real classroom right now - with protective gear - after carefully considering her other option, of early retirement).

ETA: Shouldn’t everyone be tested once a week since there are so many with no/low symptoms, unaware they are transmitting the virus?

RSBM

The people at rapidtest.org argue yes, or even twice a week.

Unfortunately, with close to 70% of people refusing to respond to contact tracers it is yet another thing that is proving impossible in the US.

RSBM

I thought the contact tracer I spoke to sounded surprised when I returned a call. She thanked me profusely.

Last night I downloaded my state's covid safe app onto my phone. Why? Because as of today I am going to have to scan a QR code, using my phone, if I want to enter certain community spaces (restaurants, pubs, cafes, my aquafit swimming pool, etc).

The scanning of the QR code will allow the state's covid safe database to record my phone number and date/time of when I entered that community space. Each community space will have its own designated QR code that will be on display at the door or on the front counter.

This will allow the state health dept to contact trace me if an infected person is known to have used that community space at the same time that I did.

COVID-19 takes lives of Jackson couple who did 'everything together'

Sad article about this couple that died together, at the exact same time from Covid- if you read further down in the article though, you will read how they contracted it: dining out in restaurants-- Apparently after they contracted the virus, they regretted dining out in restaurants. Sigh. While it is terribly sad, had they adhered to restrictions they would probably still be with us today: The couple was in their late 70s.

Another (previous) nurse who didn't use her nursing infection knowledge to her best advantage.

I see that your link includes another link that Detroit Free Press have set up, for Michigan people to honour their loved ones who passed from covid.
Sad to see so many names at their link, though it is evidently not the entire 9,000+ MI people who have died from covid.

Do you have people in Australia who are convinced that this QR tracing is the government’s way to spy on you and control you? In my Oregon county they would be furious and taking to FB with their conspiracy theories.

I pity any oncology patients or employees at a hospital in Salem Oregon with whom this nurse came in contact! Unbelievable!

A Salem Health nurse has been placed on administrative leave following a viral TikTok where she stated that she did not wear a mask out in public away from work and let her children engage in play dates.

The original TikTok from user Loveiskind05 was deleted, however, a duet of her original video, where another user is reacting to her video, has more than 240,000 likes and more than 5,000 comments after only approximately 24 hours.

I don't think so.

Not sure how govt control could happen from QR code tracing.
"Aha, she was at aquafit at 12:30pm on 1st December ... let's control her!"
"And there she is again, at Brighton Beachside Cafe at 4:40pm, same day. She definitely needs controlling! She is helping our economy, dammit! That is just not on."

Of course, there are always the random civil liberties groups who say it is an invasion of our privacy. But I think most of us roll our eyes, because who the heck cares if the health dept knows where we were (if they bother to look).
It's a flippin' pandemic we're in. And we don't want to be in it any more than we have to be.

On my Facebook feed, I have a friend that would be screaming "SOCIALISM, we must rebel" if that were to happen here in the US. They already are with the masks and mitigation measures (personal freedom,ya know o_O )

ETA: I see Lilibet said same in her area.

You know those cultural differences I spoke of earlier? This would be one of them.

We actually know what socialism is, and don't just scream the word because some leader made it sound bad.

True! I hope her administrative leave turns into permanent leave and her nursing license is revoked. What she did is unconscionable...especially around cancer patients! Unfortunately, her intended audience here in Oregon is no doubt cheering her on.

I couldn't access the video interview with Katie Couric and Moderna, but was it about this?

Moderna found its vaccine is 100 per cent effective at preventing severe cases.
In a statement on Tuesday morning (Australian time), Moderna said it would seek emergency use authorisation from the US Food and Drug Administration.
It comes just over a week after Pfizer applied for the same authorisation.

Moderna’s chief medical officer Dr Tal Zaks said he became emotional when he learnt of the “striking” results from their final trial.
He was quoted by The Associated Press as saying, “it was the first time I allowed myself to cry”.
“We have a full expectation to change the course of this pandemic.”

Is this still the Covid thread? Sorry if I'm off topic with the below:

Leaked documents reveal China's mishandling of the early stages of Covid-19 pandemic - CNN

.
"But even if they had been 100% transparent, that would not stop the Trump administration downplaying the seriousness of it. It would probably not have stopped this developing into a pandemic." ........ said Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, who has written extensively on public health in China.
