I cut/pasted transcript and sent your way of the Youtube video

(I can’t decide who’s a bigger geek, Dixie, you, or me? :D
I say this affectionately of course! But seriously, we are some nerds!)

So...the news is that the US had 4 million new COVID cases in one month (!) and Dr. Steve Atlas "resigned" from his position.

One of those pieces of news makes me very happy, the other is so disturbing that I find myself mentally trying to find a perch to sit on, where I can still be positive. All those...people...(I want to call them an uncomplimentary name) going out and getting COVID, denying other people with other illnesses a hospital bed - and infecting our healthcare workers.

4. million. and rising. Per month. We've got at least 3 months until the vaccine hits even our most vulnerable populations (beyond military and healthcare workers).

The "red zone"in the US is defined as over 100/100,000. My city is at 253/100,000 now. My zip code within my city is even higher.

Do most of y'all have such granularity with your reports? Where are most of you falling as to rates for those that know?

ETA: Looking at New York guidelines, we would be shutting down quite a bit... nada here. Not even mandatory masks. Source for screen shots below which has lots more...

Do you have people in Australia who are convinced that this QR tracing is the government’s way to spy on you and control you? In my Oregon county they would be furious and taking to FB with their conspiracy theories.

I’m not South Aussie, but I am in Oz. I think there are definitely a sub group of society that think like this. And there are definitely some whacko groups on FB, but I believe they existed before Covid and they have just taken this on as their latest complaint. Google Pete Evans, that’s one famous Aussie who has made some outrageous claims...

However, our governments have implemented strict penalties for those that don’t comply and I would imagine that has deterred a lot of this behaviour. That and I think Aussies just have a different mindset, we’re not as entrenched in politics as you guys are, and we haven’t turned this into a political drama, rather than a health one. Sure there have been little disagreements between states but nothing major...

Here is my local premier, giving a press release today...233 days with no community transmission...so incredibly lucky to have the leadership that we do here in Aus, and that they have protected us.

I don't think so.

Not sure how govt control could happen from QR code tracing.
"Aha, she was at aquafit at 12:30pm on 1st December ... let's control her!"
"And there she is again, at Brighton Beachside Cafe at 4:40pm, same day. She definitely needs controlling! She is helping our economy, dammit! That is just not on."

Of course, there are always the random civil liberties groups who say it is an invasion of our privacy. But I think most of us roll our eyes, because who the heck cares if the health dept knows where we were (if they bother to look).
It's a flippin' pandemic we're in. And we don't want to be in it any more than we have to be.

Also to add, most of us aware that the govt can access location data from phone providers, should they wish, and that they already know most things about where we are, what we are doing, when we are doing it, because the majority of people post on several social media platforms, and if you’ve seen social dilemma, you know that they already know information!!

Oh boy, the situation is bleak..

CA could run out of ICU beds by Christmas due to COVID-19, prompting Newsom to mull stay-at-home orders | KTLA

California could see a tripling of hospitalizations by Christmas and is considering stay-home orders for areas with the highest case rates as it tries to head off concerns that severe coronavirus cases could overwhelm intensive care beds, officials said Monday.

“The red flags are flying in terms of the trajectory in our projections of growth,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom. “If these trends continue, we’re going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic, action.”
...
The biggest concern is intensive care cases, which have increased 67% in the past two weeks. If that continues, it would push ICU beds to 112% of capacity by mid-December.
...
Newsom put out a new call for retired medical professionals to join the volunteer California Health Corps, and said the state may soon be using tents and other makeshift hospitals to help deal with the surge. Nearly 900 people are part of the corps, only 10 of whom are supporting skilled nursing facilities and hospitals, said Rodger Butler, a spokesman for the California Health and Human Services Agency.

@mickey2942 That's a very deep understanding of all what is to come. Great questions.

We'll be moving into a phase where folks have had, and/or have had vaccines.

I will never ever be able to find the reference (perhaps someone else here can).... but IIRC the antibody levels are ??? many times higher with the vaccine than natural infection.

That said.
How should they mask... for others still just to allay fears vs. being seen as an anti-masker?

Two to 4 months after infection... would they get reinfected. Dunno Yet even with the vaccines, (see above interview with Moderna and many posts) it hasn't been proven if folks can get it, and are protected like your kiddos... yet may transmit.

The science isn't out on that yet. At least from what I've seen. But yet, this is a question that is going to become more and more common! The messaging from leaders and scientists need to get on the same page as to expectations next year as is going to be VERY confusing to many who aren't as exposed to info as we are... and I'm not sure even after all I've read.

Also begs... if you have the vaccine, can you no longer wear a mask. Should you wear a mask just for that "Typhoid Mary type" transmission where may be in your nose, but aren't infected/get sick but could pass forward?

BTW.. I asked weeks ago and never heard... has ANYONE seen IgA studies done ANYWHERE? (IgM and IgG studies yes, but IgA comes later through secretions such as mucous membranes, breast milk etc.... I've seen nothing on such)

If anyone here has seen any IgA studies, can you post please? It's lacking yet very important MOO. Perhaps @10ofRods and others in the area can comment on?

Something just occurred to me about people flying during Thanksgiving. I’m watching the latest WHO Conference, and Doc T is talking about the upcoming holiday season, advising to avoid travelling if you can, etc., and he goes out of his way to specifically say, “don’t travel if you are sick”. I thought to myself, “duh!”, but then I remembered something!! Remember in the early days, there were those stories about people who knew they were infected and still got on airplanes anyway?Well, if that was happening back then, what’s to say this isn’t happening now!

No wonder Doc T has to tell people this. I forgot there are some people who actually do this.

I remember in the early days we used to talk about parents sending their kids off to school when they are sick...

In the Face the Nation video I posted last night, it shows Australians happily frolicking on the beach, their numbers at 8 total cases, iirc. :)

@10ofRods I think that this vaccine will open up a host of issues, not only ADA, but also religious objection. And don't get me started on the "Anti Vaxxer" folks.

Will the COVID-19 vaccine be mandatory?

I agree it cannot be generally mandated. I do think private businesses (like airlines) can require proof of vaccination to fly. There used to be proof of vaccination to travel into various nations. And there's still regulation in most states regarding vaccinations for school (although people can file for medical exemptions, many states have narrowed the loopholes considerably).

Anti-vaxxers are a small enough part of our world that if the rest of us do get vaccinated, we should achieve herd immunity (although if the vaccine is a neutralizing vaccine, those anti-vaxxers might continue to get sick, just as they do now with measles, etc).

Your screenshots just reminded me of something, Dixie, from the early days...when you used to post screenshots of which planes were in the air, flight schedules...that was cool...

(I talk about it like it was another lifetime ago...it practically was!)

There are no winners here. While I don’t condone what the restaurants are doing, I do understand their desperation. And I understand the public health department, trying to keep the community safe. Rock meet hard place on both sides. I have to wonder how many of their customers took an optional trip to visit family last week and will come home and spread coronavirus in the community, with little concern for business owners who have no options. Will these people who chose to travel trash the public health department for shutting down their favorite restaurants? It didn’t have to be this way. But now it is. :(
