COVID 19: First Minister warns Scots over Hogmanay partying

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has urged people to stay at home for Hogmanay following a rise in coronavirus cases in Scotland since Christmas.

Speaking about the traditional Scottish new year event, she said: "I take no pleasure in saying this but we should ring in 2021 in our own homes."

She said there had been "quite a big jump" in cases reported in Scotland on Monday - 1895.

This phrase may be a common one to many, but for those who suffer from anxiety (me too!), it can help:

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
I was trying to think of how that phrase went the other day! I have anxiety and ptsd. I am not ashamed to admit that. Needless to say people without this are getting a little sample of our every day life although I think issues hit much more harder for us. I still manage to say "I can do this" we can make it through. My husband and I dropped off some presents after Christmas to our grandsons. The 4 year old that mentioned being in cornfield meaning quarantine ran to me me then paused saying "grandmas scared of the virus" he did give me a quick hug!

Maskless Mob Storms Gourmet Grocery in City Awash in Death

There is a segment of our population that just keeps getting crazier and crazier:

There is a short video of them in this link, trying to push their way past the masked staff to get into the store.

WTH is the matter with people?? LA County is on its knees with suffering, and they think the restrictions have 'gotten out of hand', because they need to wear a little mask. The poor store staff, having to deal with this crapola.

That’s great news to me, my son is getting married in October and I desperately want the borders open so all the family can attend!
I have two friends from WA currently stuck in NSW...one applied for an exemption and was refused, she has 3 boys enrolled in school, her partner works FIFO in WA and they just completed on a house weeks before Xmas...she will keep applying.

The patient, a 42-year-old physical therapist and mother of four young children, had never had psychiatric symptoms or any family history of mental illness. Yet there she was, sitting at a table in a beige-walled room at South Oaks Hospital in Amityville, N.Y., sobbing and saying that she kept seeing her children, ages 2 to 10, being gruesomely murdered and that she herself had crafted plans to kill them.

“It was like she was experiencing a movie, like ‘Kill Bill,’” Dr. Goueli, a psychiatrist, said.

The patient described one of her children being run over by a truck and another decapitated. “It’s a horrifying thing that here’s this well-accomplished woman and she’s like ‘I love my kids, and I don’t know why I feel this way that I want to decapitate them,’” he said.

The only notable thing about her medical history was that the woman, who declined to be interviewed but allowed Dr. Goueli to describe her case, had become infected with the coronavirus in the spring. She had experienced only mild physical symptoms from the virus, but, months later, she heard a voice that first told her to kill herself and then told her to kill her children.

I wonder if they are prescribing montelukast...was given a black box warning for side effects in March 2020 after suicidal ideation in kids as young as 4...

Probs wouldn’t be listed in the mental health drugs prescribed as it is for respiratory conditions...supposedly.

I think our state coordinator has his finger hovering over the button right now. He has told any people going to NSW to reconsider their plans, and urged any South Australians there to come home from NSW. "Restrictions may be imposed at short notice". Sounds like our border may be closing soon.

160 cases now in Sydney. It has seeded. Gladys isn't shutting down Sydney fast enough for my liking. I hope we close our border today.

They’re not messing around here...the tin foil hat lady that walked out of quarantine was still in police custody last I heard. The community FB pages were pretty much up for hunting her down...she did have some crazy stuff on her FB. Mark would’ve blown his stack if she was positive...

This morning's release - 3,725 new deaths in US

Wow ... that is horribly incredible. Approaching 4,000 deaths per day! My gosh.

Buckle up, it is going to be a rough ride. :(

As the pandemic relentlessly persists, we are seeing the highest levels of anxiety and depression reported since the pandemic hit the U.S. in March. This is a troubling trend being fueled by loneliness and isolation. We are also seeing alarming numbers of children reporting thoughts of suicide and self-harm. The 2021 State of Mental Health in America report confirms the trend that mental health in the U.S. continues to get worse and many states are ill-prepared to handle this crisis and policymakers at every level of government need to act immediately.

View the report
Snip of report:
Key Findings
  • Youth mental health is worsening. 9.7% of youth in the U.S. have severe major depression, compared to 9.2% in last year’s dataset. This rate was highest among youth who identify as more than one race, at 12.4%.
  • Even before COVID-19, the prevalence of mental illness among adults was increasing. In 2017-2018, 19% of adults experienced a mental illness, an increase of 1.5 million people over last year’s dataset.
  • Suicidal ideation among adults is increasing. The percentage of adults in the U.S. who are experiencing serious thoughts of suicide increased 0.15% from 2016-2017 to 2017-2018 – an additional 460,000 people from last year’s dataset.
  • There is still unmet need for mental health treatment among youth and adults. 60% of youth with major depression did not receive any mental health treatment in 2017-2018. Even in states with the greatest access, over 38% are not receiving the mental health services they need. Among youth with severe depression, only 27.3% received consistent treatment. 23.6% of adults with a mental illness reported an unmet need for treatment in 2017-2018. This number has not declined since 2011.
  • The percentage of adults with a mental illness who are uninsured increased for the first time since the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Nationally, 10.8% are uninsured, totaling 5.1 million adults. This figure differs dramatically across states – in New Jersey (ranked #1) 2.5% of adults with AMI are uninsured, compared to 23% in Wyoming (ranked #51)

I posted an article yesterday that said that domestic violence is also up by 60% (I think they were speaking specifically of Chicago). People's nerves are frayed, people are not thinking right .... it is all too scary and horrendous.

It is another sad and terrible side effect of not getting this virus under control/manageable. Of people not wearing that little piece of cloth across their face and not social distancing and not washing their hands a lot. Simple things.

I like your idea better.

"All passengers on flights entering Canada will require a negative PCR test three days before their arrival."

Three days is too far out, especially as Canada cannot control the (presumed) requirement of the traveller isolating between the PCR test and getting on the plane. And Canada doesn't have enforced hotel quarantine once they arrive there.

One of them was a lifelong friend of mine, who caught COVID last March, working in an ED that mostly serves agricultural workers.

He was a year older than me and one of the best doctors I've ever known.

He was 66.

Things were very challenging back in March. Testing was new, if even yet available, contact tracing barely in place, there were shortages of PPE, and scientists were still learning about this new virus. It's terribly sad that this great man was taken down by the virus. I wish that there was a way to honour those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

This man, your friend, deserves to be honoured, but we hear almost nothing about the deaths of health care workers. Instead, we hear about politicians who have died after spurning mask regulations, travelling against the advice of those who care about them, and attending Christmas parties that never should have taken place. Bah!

Wow ... that is horribly incredible. Approaching 4,000 deaths per day! My gosh.

Buckle up, it is going to be a rough ride. :(

TBF, there were days with no data (Christmas Eve was a Thursday - data was poor that day, people who usually input it went home; it wasn't until Tuesday the 28th that things began to return to normal, but some of our increased numbers are from delayed reporting).

OTOH, there are counties in California where we know it's bad (including many deaths) that haven't reported and every day, some states are failing to report. Eventually the actual date of death data will be known, but in the meantime...yes, we're going up toward 4000 (and I think we'll get there) but I'm holding out hope that it won't be quite as rapid as what this week's figures show.

Of course, now we have more holidays coming up.

I have colleagues who think 3600 is still a low number for yesterday's recorded deaths, we're waiting to see who is right (I tend to be the optimist).

If we do get to 4000 per day by next Tuesday, I won't really be surprised. New York is about to hit 2000 deaths per million of population (!) which is 1 in 500 people dead. Of COVID.

Boggles the mind.

If we're above 3500 deaths today...it does not bode well for next week. We could well get to 100,000 or more deaths per month in January.

I hope all of us here on WS are prepared to stay in our bunkers as much as possible for the next couple of months.
