I had to reread that line about your relative a few times!!! ha ha

Are you that far North to be that cold??? Wow... 0 degrees. But spring comes pretty early , right???

32 Fahrenheit in American money!

Last year spring was wonderful, we locked down end of March and it was unseasonably warm for weeks. Definitely made Lockdown 1.0 more bearable!

It's - 1 here in the south right now too. A cold front and damp mist in the air. I havent been out for a walk today, feels too cold and miserable out there. January lockdown is hard going.

667 here but that includes the whole Vale which touches outer London. We were down to 13 at one point. It is depressing and terrifying actually.

It's my aunt's funeral tomorrow. Being streamed, with very few people attending. Part of me is glad that she passed peacefully on the Covid ward with a healthcare assistant sitting beside her. Dread to think how it might be now.

I'm so sorry, HongKongPhooey. It's very hard that we can't have funerals or visit the dying. I think if the hospitals weren't so entirely overwhelmed, they might let us suit up and visit the dying - but that is far in the future.

My cousin was given the option to visit during final hours but decided not to. They warned her it would be a v high covid risk as many patients on the ward were coughing so badly. She was worried for herself, as a single mum. Terrible decisions to make.

I of course decided I would go! Hot head. But at the ripe old age of my early 50s my parents told me I wasnt allowed! Very rarely in my life have they ever said no, you're not to do that...

Honestly though, how tragic?

Such is the friendship of WS, can you believe a few of my close buddies here are actually watching the live stream funeral tomorrow "with" me and others are lighting candles. Amazing.

Thank you, and to you.

These lonely times would have been so much worse without our friends here.

Things aren't getting any better in South Carolina! Percent positive continues to soar.

South Carolina reports almost 4,000 new COVID-19 cases, percent-positive near 35%

310,246 confirmed positive cases (+3,935)
5,189 confirmed deaths (+51)

Total Tests Received - 3,895,919
Percent Positive - 34.2%

Oh my!

Has anyone seen a chart that shows if percent positive is x, what the number of positives should be multiplied by? I wonder if it's an exponential curve for such determination.

TIA if anyone has ever seen/heard of such extrapolations which are science based.

Looked like a huge "super spreader" event in D.C. last night. Predicting uptick in Covid for area in next week and after.

Wish I could remember which member was interviewed, but said that on the floor, all required to wear. But once they were in their secret place.. many (who shall go nameless) took off their masks and refused to wear.

In 10 days, it will be the one-year anniversary of @Amonet starting this thread, and for many of us beginning to worry. One year ago today, I can’t remember what I might have worried about because it was so insignificant.

Worldometer just ended their daily( GMT day).
Coronavirus Update (Live): 88,495,963 Cases and 1,906,630 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Pandemic - Worldometer

Today 4,134 deaths in US
Yesterday 4,100 deaths in US
D-before Yesterday 3,769

That's heading to 120,000 in 30 days if levels out.

Yet, I don't think we are to level at all. But peak now may be into February 9 on their last IHME projection...so will be growing MOO as these graphs haven't been updated as to their IHME projections on December 23rd

... the actuals are just pushing at the different projections at IHME | COVID-19 Projections as every person here knows that the curve doesn't even fall that fast on the back end MOO We've been tracking at or above the "easing" models for some time!

When I volunteered on the ambulance -- nearly a decade ago -- the EMTs would obtain a "phone patch" with the doctor who was on call, or the patient's actual physician, and call th death over the phone, depending on the state of the patient. But, they had to be obviously dead, not someone who could be rescuitated.

Not transporting a patient because an EMT thinks their chance of survival is low, is risky, in my opinion. I think lawsuits will arise, especially because emergency workers are paid by tax dollars and every taxpayer has a right to be treated in an emergency situation.

It's so sad it's come to this.
I used to be a nationally licensed EMT (volunteer) and the standard we were trained to use before presuming someone dead was “incompatible with life”. The examples given were decapitation and rigor mortis. Anyone still warm, or with a pulse, or gasping for even the smallest breath or if they froze, drowned or their collapse was known to occur in the last half(?) hour were all to be regarded as savable.

I cannot even begin to imagine being asked to refuse transport of a living person, much less personally deciding who was worthy of transport. Not one of us would have felt qualified to assess who would likely die and who might survive. Almost all EMTs and Paramedics have transported someone “certain to die” only to find out later they had a full recovery. They can’t know for sure and they know they can’t know. Even if I could somehow bring myself to make a no-transport call at the scene I am 100% certain I would second guess each of those decisions for the rest of my life. It would destroy me. I’m certain of it. I would probably quit immediately, but I’d feel guilty and second-guess that decision too. What a nightmare!

Update on 2 folks I know personally that have been hospitalized.

One went home today, 92% O2 level at checkout while ON oxygen. She had the 5 rounds of Remdesivir and steroids and out she goes. Went home with Oxygen tank. (Yeah, you and I are thinking the same damn thing I bet..they need the bed). She said one of the worst things was how many times a day she heard code blue and the commotion that ensues (or doesn't).

Other family friend still in hospital.

Something to watch for. Post vaccine.
Death of Florida doctor following COVID-19 vaccine under investigation

Dr. Gregory Michael, 56, an OB-GYN at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, died after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke apparently resulting from a lack of platelets.

Miami medical examiners are investigating his death, the Florida Department of Health said in a statement.

In a Facebook post, Michael's wife, Heidi Neckelmann, said he sought emergency care three days after the shot because he had dots on his skin that indicated internal bleeding.

The condition she said led to his stroke, called thrombocytopenia, results from a lower-than-normal number of platelets, which help the blood clot.

I got suddenly sick early yesterday morning- head ache, nausea, vomiting... but it terrified me. I re-read all the COVID symptoms.... ordered a free test kit from my county; called my health care provider. I never had (and still do not have a fever). I think I just got a noro virus... however it made me realize that any illness these days, even something that I would not have thought about too much a year or so ago is now pretty terrifying.
Same thing with me Sunday night, same symptoms. I cried, so scared of the unknown.
Negative result today.

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and ask, 'Where have I gone wrong?' Then a voice says to me, 'This is going to take more than one night.'

Tonight I thank my ‘lucky stars’ for friends like you.

More contagious COVID-19 strain identified in Harris County, the first [detected] in Texas
“It was only a matter of time,” said Dr. Joseph Petrosino, director of molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. “It’s concerning from the standpoint that increased transmissibility means that unless we do a better job stopping the spread, we’re going to have more people in already overtaxed hospitals. Also, more spread leads to more new variants, any of which could be more severe or resistant to treatment.”
