This is an excellent idea. Are they allowing known positive cases to travel back for quarantine in this new facility, or is it just for travelers who come in initially negative but then test positive during the quarantine period?

Returning travellers are required to produce a negative test taken within 72 hours of departure (a fairly recent requirement). They don't want known sick or asymptomatic people travelling and infecting the whole plane.

Needless to say, covid positive people are still arriving though. 72 hours prior to departure, plus a long plane journey home, possibly transiting through another country, still leaves time for the virus to rear its ugly head in some people.

The rules for travellers returning to Australia are here, if anyone wants to know.

This is so scary! So great that your government had a 16 day test - very smart. People have managed not to show up positive for longer periods than earlier thought.

Australia doesn't have the UK or South African variants, right?

Just want to say that I saw this article ...

"As of February 5, 87 samples of the UK strain and 18 samples of the South African strain had been recorded in the hotel quarantine system, he said."
"“We need to be prepared for those strains, which are definitely more able to be transmitted between people,” Professor Kelly said."

Wow, that is just crazy! I haven't seen a soul going about without a mask and not distancing, for months! It just looks so horrible to see crowds of people show so little regard for their own health and that of others.

I haven't either, but I think people feel differently in different areas of the country. With all the precautions we need to take, I think the last thing that should be allowed is contact sports of any kind. I get it that people want everything to feel normal, but that's crazy.

Are 3 deaths out of the Millions who have received the vaccines, really statistically significant? I mean, even if they were all confirmed to be related to the vaccine, it still has to be Many times less deadly than the rate at which someone could die if they came down with the virus itself.

I'd be more concerned if we were hearing about deaths happening all over the place. I find it difficult to believe these various vaccines would be authorized around the world, if they posed a significant risk to the lives of people who take them.

I hear ya!! and I agree!! It is scary to think that though it is very very rare, a person could die after having a vaccine-- I think it is an idiosyncratic reaction-- that person, for whatever reason had a horrible deadly reaction to the vaccine- In no way do I think people should not get vaccinated and I will get one ( I am trying to get one but no luck)-

36 people developed rare blood disorder after covid vaccination | Daily Mail Online

36 people, and out of those 36 one person died, after developing thrombocytopenia ( decreased platelets) after they received the vaccine. That is a lot of people- the situation is being investigated.

In my mind there is no question the vaccine has caused this- it is still a small portion of those who have been vaccinated, but it is still cause for concern.

There are different causes of thrombocytopenia, but one of the causes has to do with the immune system. It seems to me, that in those people who had this reaction, the vaccine caused the immune system to destroy platelets. I am no physician, but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the relationship.

wonder if they could develop a test to predict this reaction... expect that they are working on it

Victorian health authorities believe the use of a nebuliser by a COVID-infected guest may be behind the spread of the virus at the Holiday Inn quarantine hotel where two workers and another returned traveller were infected.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the nebuliser was used by a guest with a pre-existing health condition, who was taken to intensive care with the virus on Tuesday and who is now fighting for their life.

“We believe that the transmission of the UK strain occurred prior to them entering Victoria,” he said.

Returned travellers have been required to declare any medical devices upon their arrival, but quarantine boss Emma Cassar said the man’s nebuliser seems to have inadvertently slipped through.

“I think in this instance the individual didn’t recognise his nebuliser ... as a medical device,” she said.

Professor Sutton said a nebuliser could create tiny particles of coronavirus that could spread when a hotel room’s door was opened.

Just got word on my COVID vaccine. I am getting my first dose on Thursday. :)

Most may know this, but I don’t think I’ve posted here that my Covid progressed to the point that I landed in the hospital last Thursday with Covid pneumonia (as opposed to Covid without respiratory symptoms) and low O2. That was my “golden ticket” to get a hospital bed. Otherwise they send you home to be miserable since there’s nothing they can do.

I had hoped the monoclonal antibody treatment would help keep me out of the hospital, as that’s the goal, but I think it at least kept my symptoms from getting a lot worse. I hadn’t eaten anything but applesauce for a week and wanted to sleep all the time, my O2 dipped to 88-89%, so my husband called 911 and sent me off to ER. The small 49 bed local hospital in our town handles the regular Covid cases in a wing with about 10 beds, and the ICU patients go to the larger 375 bed hospital 12 miles away.

I had “presidential treatment.” Antiviral Remdesevir daily IV for five days, steroid dexamethosone, blood thinner to prevent clots, inhaled treatments twice daily by a respiratory therapist and a PT. I was on O2, reduced from 3L to 1.5L. Most of my nurses were “travelers” (Chicago, Utah, Michigan, Louisiana) and were wonderful. Interestingly, my respiratory therapist told me that 95% of her patients have no idea where they got Covid. If only half are truthful, that’s still scary! So please be careful!!

I came home today, without needing home O2, thankfully. The doctor put me on a 1/2 dose of a blood thinner (not Coumadin) for 7 days to prevent the little clots that are common with Covid. He said my cough and exhaustion could last for weeks. My husband is still exhausted and coughing but his O2 is good, so we will recuperate together.

I’m very grateful for the amazing care I received in our rural county in southern Oregon, and that things didn’t go downhill. I had been afraid since last March that if I got Covid it would kill me because of mild asthma, controlled high blood pressure, overweight and age (75), but I’m still here! :) I can’t emphasize enough the need to increase precautions, especially with the U.K. mutation spreading rapidly. Don’t get casual! Hugs to all!

Pleased to hear that. Good on you!

Oh boy ... here we go again. State borders closing against Victoria. Their outbreak from a quarantine hotel has gone from one person to three people to eight people now.
(This is the outbreak that is believed to have been caused by a nebuliser.)

The first shipment of Pfizer (80,000 doses, of an initial 10,000,000 dose order) is set to arrive next week.
Nowhere near enough, but at least we can get started.

Covid-19 US: NYC man in 70s dies 25 minutes after getting vaccine | Daily Mail Online

70 year old man in New York collapses and dies 25 minutes after getting the vaccine.

These deaths, though extremely rare, scare me. This is the third death related to the vaccine (though not proven to be caused by the vaccine)- A 56 year old doctor, a woman in her 50's, and now this man.

With respect to the death of this man, they are saying it was not an allergic reaction.

It seems to me that these deaths are related to the vaccine, but the mechanism is obviously not known.
It doesn't scare me at all.
My 84 yr old dad got the Moderna vaccine.
ZERO- ANYTHING
He didn't even feel the needle.
IMO the deaths were not due to the shot.
Perhaps the shot caused stress on their system, Maybe a rise in blood pressure/ or a fall.
MOO

Dr. Campbell update yesterday. First part discusses Brazil, and how they had such a high rate of infections previously, but now a surprisingly high resurgence even with high seroprevelance. He covers 4 reasons why happening, and what it means for the future potentially.
