WHO's Mike Ryan to receive Trócaire's Romero International Award

Dr Mike Ryan of the World Health Organization will receive Trócaire's Romero International Award at a ceremony today in recognition of his work.

Mr Ryan is the Executive Director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme.

The Irishman has been at the forefront of managing acute risks to global health for nearly 25 years.

The Romero award commemorates the work of the late Archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Romero, who fought against poverty and repression in his native El Salvador.

The honour highlights efforts to raise awareness of human rights violations and support for people who are experiencing poverty and injustice.

This year the award will be given jointly to Dr Ryan and Dr Lilian Otiso at a webinar which will be held this afternoon.

Dr Otiso is the Executive Director of a Kenyan NGO founded in 2001 called Liverpool Voluntary Counselling and Testing (LVCT).

She oversees over 200 staff implementing programmes on HIV prevention, testing, counselling, care and treatment.

The LVCT programmes also seek to tackle gender-based violence against adolescent girls and young women.

(...)

Despite the demands of his job in the past year, Dr Ryan has been generous with his time outside of the WHO.

He has spoken at webinars, accepted awards from NGOs and answered innumerable questions from journalists worldwide.

BAD NEWS-Exclusive: Two variants have merged into heavily mutated coronavirus | New Scientist

Health 16 February 2021
By Graham Lawton

Two variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes covid-19 have combined their genomes to form a heavily mutated hybrid version of the virus. The “recombination” event was discovered in a virus sample in California, provoking warnings that we may be poised to enter a new phase of the pandemic.

The hybrid virus is the result of recombination of the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant discovered in the UK and the B.1.429 variant that originated in California and which may be responsible for a recent wave of cases in Los Angeles because it carries a mutation making it resistant to some antibodies.

Super interesting read, was it the elevator? I avoid the elevator in my apartment building for just this reason.
Covid-19 in Spain: Architecture of an outbreak: the Spanish apartment building hijacked by the coronavirus | Society | EL PAÍS in English (elpais.com)

Six people are dead and dozens more infected after the virus moved undetected through a 16-story residential property in the Basque city of Bilbao

I would think that an elevator would not be a good place to be during a pandemic: people in a small space, standing close together--- and at least one of them having the virus.

With the new variants, it is hard to say how the virus travels. We have had people in strict quarantine who have caught the virus from someone else in strict quarantine.

The authorities have trawled through all the CCTV and have seen no safety breaches. No mixing of people, no sharing of space. They conclude ventilation, and in one case perhaps nebuliser mist escaping when a door was opened.

Now, they are keeping infected people in a whole different building, instead of just different rooms.

Landing at random to bump a couple of Tricia's earlier posts:

Hey Everyone,

After SillyBilly's warning, I am still seeing political posts.

I really REALLY want to keep this thread open. This thread is needed but everyone needs to stop with the politics. Stop with the complaining about politics. Stop with the complaining about posters complaining about politics.

PLEASE JUST STOP!

Thank you,

Tricia
