Outbreak of 69 #COVID19 cases in 2 schools, plus 20 at daycare centers in one Danish city—all #B117. “Something going on with the infection of [variant] #B117 among children that we have not seen with the old coronavirus” says an epidemiologist.

Holy cow: 10% of the village of Corzano
has the #B117 variant—10% of all residents! 60% of cases are kids from kindergarten and primary school, other 40% are their parents, says the mayor. Schools in the village now closed

None of this data surprises me at all. Schools here have been in person, 5 days a week, since late August. It was almost 9 full weeks before we had a SINGLE case in the middle and high school my two attend, despite rapidly escalating community spread.

Both of my kids in middle/high school have now had covid, neither of whom got it at school or from anyone they go to school with. More significantly, none of their “close contacts” at school, nor any of their teachers, tested positive either (and all had to be tested).

I have 4 kids total, all of whom have had it now, each at completely different times, and nobody else in the house got it from each other. I haven’t had it, and am now about a month post vaccine #2. It’s not quite as easily transmissible as one might think... but these new more contagious variants might be a totally different ball game.

From my personal experience though with our schools here, what these studies are showing is spot on with what we are seeing. Transmission among school-aged kids isn’t really rampant in the schools as a general rule (here, anyway). I do realize our schools were basically a live experiment to see what happened when we opened back up. Edited to add: Our schools are religious about wearing masks and social distancing, and their cleaning routines are nothing short of impressive.
Wow. All 4 of your kids had it at different times but didn’t get it from each other.
They didn’t get it at school or friends either?

It’s a good thing you didn’t get it too!

It’s been a wild 6 months for sure!! I was actually very impressed we managed to not get it from each other when each of them had it!! None of them got it at school for sure. We know where the positive exposure was for 3 of the 4, and the fourth one hadn’t been in school for well over 2 weeks when symptoms began for her. She’s the only one without a known positive contact.

I was just speechless that she was not more concerned about: 1. visiting family 2. going through at least 2 airports twice (maybe more- I did not ask her full itinerary) 3. going on some public transportation in a destination country 4. now going through a surgery here
while I worry about every foray out and every contact ... this person is fairly old and a licensed degreed heath professional. Also happen to know she was not vaccinated because I did talk to her about that previously.

wow that scares me

The deception continues.

Cuomo fallout continues as top doctor denies claim he was an adviser: "One five-minute conversation"

The fallout over Governor Andrew Cuomo's handling of nursing home coronavirus data continued on Friday when a top doctor denied a claim from Cuomo's team that he was one of their chief health advisers.

"I've had one five-minute conversation my entire life with Governor Cuomo, just a few weeks ago when he called me just to congratulate me on a TV program appearance," Dr. Michael Osterholm said in an interview with PBS' Firing Line.

Cuomo's order to put Covid patients in nursing homes bothered me from the beginning, and I couldn't understand why so many didn't seem to care. Now, it seems the media and other former supporters are turning on him so it's probably only a matter of time before he steps down.

AOC is calling for a full-scale investigation. And, CNN is no longer allowing Chris Cuomo to chat with Andrew on the show.

It's time for Andrew to admit how awful the mistake was and take responsibility for it. I don't think he can come back from this. So many people are disappointed.

AOC for the win here, in Texas as well raising over a $million
Big applause!!

Sure, if you're okay with 92% effectiveness. For the elderly and vulnerable, that is still a lot of death.

Of course, it takes time to figure this out - and no one knows how it will fare with the new variants, 85% effectiveness is not enough for me to go back to normal - nor would I recommend that for anyone over 55.

Also, the number of moderate to severe cases goes up with just one dose. No thank you.

I was listening to NPR the other day and supposedly all the research they have shows that school cases do not originate from school exposures- meaning that the people who happen to be in a school and get COVID got it at home or in some other activity:

All of this involves schools who are following mitigation measures. There are plenty of documented cases of school transmission - and including districts with low community spread just dilutes your point.

I'd go with the data from national studies. Adult-to-adult transmission in schools is a real thing.

The kids are probably all right (although the B.1.1.2 variant seems to be bringing COVID to kids in a scary way - so again, it's too soon to have a lede that confuses people about schools, IMO).

In my Central West , New South Wales, Australia area.

Bathurst residents to miss first stage of COVID vaccine rollout

Aged care facilities in Orange will be among the first sites to get access to and begin administering COVID-19 jabs next week, with the federal government beginning the first phase of Pfizer vaccine rollout on Monday morning.

But Bathurst residents will have to wait a little longer for their access to the jabs.

The vaccination rollout begins almost a year to the day since the first diagnosed case in Australia with around 80,000 doses set to be released in the first week - 30,000 are allocated for workers and residents of aged-care facilities.

Orange facilities are among those, Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee confirmed, and based on health.gov.au information will be the only aged-care sites across the Central West to be included in the opening week of the roll-out.

no- after he second shot, you get 1% more effectiveness.... (maybe not even significant) and some people have been turning themselves inside out to get a second shot- they just did not have the data when this started,I guess, but the second shot is not that valuable.

"According to clinical trial results Pfizer provided to the FDA, its vaccine showed 52.4% effectiveness after one shot. However, that research did not show the effectiveness of the vaccine two weeks after the shot was given. The effectiveness jumped to 94% more than two weeks out from the first shot and 95% efficacy a week after the second shot."

Study: Pfizer COVID vaccine is ‘highly effective’ after one dose; can be stored at higher temperatures

Even though I’ve had Covid and did the monoclonal antibody treatment and will get the vaccine at the end of April (90 days from the monoclonal antibody treatment) if it’s available, I have no intention of going back to normal. The U.K mutation is floating around Oregon and at 75 I don’t want to take a chance of getting it again. I dodged the bullet once and I don’t want to tempt the virus again! My “back to normal” signal will be when Dr Fauci AND my county public health department say we’ve reached herd immunity. I’ll wait.

For the non-scientists among us, Richard Engel of NBC is hosting a special this Sunday at 10 pm EST that will explain how the virus and variants work, among other things. I saw a teaser tonight on MSNBC and the graphic cartoon was great!

U.S. House Democrats advance $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid bill

Besides the additional funding for medical supplies, major components of the massive aid plan focus on stimulating the country’s economy, which has struggled over the past year under job layoffs and shuttered businesses resulting from a pandemic that has killed nearly 500,000 Americans.

The plan would offer direct payments to households, extended federal unemployment benefits, aid to state and local governments, and other steps.
