She may be a "damn good nurse' but her thought process is irrational when it comes to masking-- something as simple as a piece of cloth over your mouth to keep germs from projecting out of your mouth --and thus protecting others and yourself, becomes an issue for which she is ready to lose her job!!! I don't get it, I really don't. Her statement that this virus has a 98% survival rate is misleading . She is a nurse for God's sake: She must have seen the suffering and death of people she cared for. She must know that people over 65 have a
70% death rate if they contract this virus, according to Dr. Osterholm.

I've been thinking about this since early in the spread of the virus, so I'm glad to see The New Yorker addressing the issue. We have much to learn about this virus.

The usual trend of death from infectious diseases—malaria, typhoid, diphtheria, H.I.V.—follows a dismal pattern. Lower-income countries are hardest hit, with high-income countries the least affected. But if you look at the pattern of COVID-19 deaths reported per capita—deaths, not infections—Belgium, Italy, Spain, the United States, and the United Kingdom are among the worst off.

Why Does the Pandemic Seem to Be Hitting Some Countries Harder Than Others?

Co-Infection with 2 SARS-CoV2 strains
Date: 4 Mar 2021

Cientistas comprovam infecção simultânea por duas variantes do coronavírus

Brazilian scientists have proven that it is possible for people to be
infected simultaneously with 2 different lines of the new coronavirus.
It was the 1st time that specialists have attested the possibility of
co-infection by Sars-CoV-2.

The final version of the study (full version - 3 MB) was published in
the scientific journal Virus Research on 22 Feb 2021.

The researchers did the genetic sequencing of the viruses present in
92 people. In 2 women in their 30s, 2 different strains were found
simultaneously.

In one case, the 2 variants have been circulating in Brazil since the
beginning of the pandemic. In the other, in addition to an older
strain of the virus, the P2 variant was detected, identified for the
1st time in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2 women did not develop severe forms of the disease. With mild
symptoms, they were not hospitalized.

According to the research, the concern with coinfection is not due to
the worsening of the disease but to the possibility of recombination
of the genome of the different strains, which can generate new
variants of the coronavirus.

Minn. health officials report COVID-19 variant clusters in Carver Co., call for youth sports pause - StarTribune.com

Health officials are recommending changes for youth sports across Minnesota after identifying COVID-19 case clusters in Carver County that involve a more contagious form of the pandemic virus.

Since late January, at least 68 coronavirus cases have been connected to participants in school-sponsored and club sports, the Minnesota Department of Health announced Friday.

Whole genome sequencing has confirmed that 24 of the cases were caused by the variant known as B.1.1.7, with cases found in athletes, coaches, students and household contacts. Health officials have found links between those cases and at least 44 others.

Cases among young athletes span a number of sports including hockey, wrestling, basketball and Alpine skiing. The state also has seen case increases connected to gyms and fitness centers in Carver County, including some linked to sports-related outbreaks.

Aren’t gyms on the high risk list?

Regarding these sports above: Unless you have a tight bubble and constant testing - plus each household adheres to the exact same rules - I don’t see how it would work successfully to be a low enough risk.

Worth paying attention to:
Articles which speak of younger people becoming sick in Brazil. The articles are in Portuguese. I have put the translated title in English. After following the link you can right click the article page and choose to translate it to English. I believe they are still trying to determine why more young people are becoming infected. The why is important, but the facts on the ground at the moment are also important.

The article does not mention whether this was a travel related case or not. It was identified in a 2 year old child at a children's hospital. I would like to know more about this case. Because if it is not connected to a travel related case then it means it is a community acquired case. And one in a child at a hospital. Hopefully we will know more soon. This is in Ohio.

World no closer to answer on COVID origins despite WHO probe - expert

World no closer to answer on COVID origins despite WHO probe - expert
By Reuters Staff

“At this point we are no further advanced than we were a year ago,” said Nikolai Petrovsky, an expert in vaccines at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, and one of 26 global experts who signed the open letter, published on Thursday."

“All possibilities remain on the table and I have yet to see a single piece of independent scientific data that rules out any of them,” said Petrovsky.

Disappointing...but not surprising.

A future COVID-19 vaccine could be squirted up the nose. The nasal spray could stop transmission, especially in kids.

Altimmune's AdCOVID Vaccine Gets Positive FDA Update

Altimmune's experimental COVID-19 vaccine, AdCOVID, is designed to be sprayed in the nostrils.
  • A US company called Altimmune is developing a COVID-19 vaccine that gets sprayed up the nose.
  • Such intranasal vaccines may reduce coronavirus transmission better than shots do.
  • Boosters designed to protect against variants could also be delivered intranasally, experts say.

As in the movie Contagion! I remember when watching the film recently.... if this became the norm for protection and boosters, given in all doctors offices..... many more people would opt in.

If we had 150 cases a day .. heck, if we had 15 cases a day .. we would be in lockdown. For sure. No doubt about it.

I guess that is why we are considered "not vulnerable" and our vaccine orders are being re-routed elsewhere. <sigh>

yep... still burns.
Do really good... and go to the end of the line.

have not been on an airplane during the pandemic; have not wanted to travel to FL, HOWEVER, there are radio advertisements for FL hotels every day ...theme parks open, airlines flying... is anyone really surprised?

I am still deeply disturbed by his references to Florida during his CPAC speech as a “free oasis,” knowing that he could care less about the human life that was/is expendable to him.

CDC loosens guidelines for fully vaccinated Americans
More at link
Americans fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can gather indoors with other vaccinated people without masks or social distancing, one of several new guidelines announced Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC also said vaccinated Americans can avoid face-coverings and physical distance during visits to a single household with people who are unvaccinated but considered low-risk, paving the way for hugs between fully vaccinated grandparents and many family members.

Vaccinated people also can refrain from quarantining or testing after they’re exposed to the virus, so long as they remain asymptomatic, the CDC said. They should keep an eye on symptoms for two weeks, CDC noted. They should also still wear masks when out in public.

The long-awaited guidelines come as the federal government and states have ramped up vaccination efforts in the hopes of returning to normalcy after a pandemic that’s left more than half a million Americans dead.
