Chances are that most people have already been vaccinated with one or more vaccines that use fetal cell lines, in their lifetime.

The chickenpox vac, a rabies vac, the rubella vac, the shingles vac, and the hepatitis A vac all use fetal cell lines also. It is not an uncommon thing in science.

Greece on Monday mourned a 37-day-old baby, the youngest among the country’s nearly 6,800 Covid-19 victims, AFP reports.

“Sadly today we had the pandemic’s youngest victim in our country, an infant that spent 17 of its 37 days fighting the coronavirus,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tweeted.

“Today, grief is unbearable,” he said.

If a critical mass of people don’t accept Covid-19 vaccines, the country won’t achieve “herd immunity.” When there was just a trickle of vaccines, hesitancy didn’t matter as much because plenty of people were clamoring for the scarce shots. Now that the supply is ramping up, the challenge is to overcome fear, distrust and outright antagonism to the new vaccines shared by some groups in large numbers. That’s the path to save lives, slow the emergence of new virus variants, end the stress on the health care system and restore the economy.

“We’ve got fairly good trust — but there’s a block of the community, or the population, who thinks that this is a hoax, that it’s to exert control to limit people’s freedom,” said Mike Holmes, who for over 40 years has been CEO of Scenic Rivers Health Services in one of the most rural regions of Minnesota. “That’s a hard group to convince.”

Because the pandemic hit Black and brown communities so hard — at the same time as a broad and disruptive American awakening over race — much of the focus has been on getting the shots to minority communities and addressing their long distrust of a health care system that at times has ignored and abused them. But polls have found that some of the deepest opposition to vaccines is among rural whites and Republicans, including some who say the risk of Covid-19 has been exaggerated. One coalition of health groups and nonprofits has even engaged a prominent GOP pollster and wordsmith to help them break through with pro-vaccine messages.

But the damage from months of mixed messaging about the virus’s severity, whether from T**** world or social media, has been done, say public health experts and health care workers administering shots in rural America.

It's really odd how some groups are more leery of getting the virus than others. From what I've read, the most skeptical of all are blacks, but it's difficult to figure out why. Some say it's because there's a history of them not trusting American medicine, but that doesn't really seem so likely to me because--as far as I know--they seek medical treatment as often as any other group.

On the plus side, Native Americans are getting vaccinated at healthy rates.

The Japanese government has decided to exclude overseas spectators from attending this summer's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, officials with knowledge of the matter said Tuesday.

The government and the Japanese organizing committee of the Summer Games are expected to hold a remote meeting with the International Olympic Committee and two other bodies later this month to make a formal decision on the issue of overseas visitors.

The government has concluded that welcoming fans from abroad is not possible given concerns among the Japanese public over the coronavirus and the fact that more contagious variants have been detected in many countries, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Batch of Oxford vaccine suspected of link to Austrian nurse's death went to 17 countries
Seventeen European countries received doses from a batch of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine that authorities in Austria have stopped using while investigating a death and an illness, a senior health official has told Reuters.

The warning came after a 49-year-old nurse in Zwettl, a town north-west of Vienna, died as a result of severe coagulation disorders after receiving the vaccine. Another nurse from Zwettl who is 35 and received a dose from the same batch, ABV 5300, developed a pulmonary embolism and is recovering.

Christa Wirthumer-Hoche, the head of Austrian public health agency AGES’ medicines market supervisory body, was quoted by Reuters as saying:

We informed all European colleagues in the European network as this batch, which amounted to roughly a million doses in total, was sent to 17 European countries.

The European Medicines Agency’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), which monitors the safety of medicines, discussed the case on Monday, said Wirthumer-Hoche, who also heads EMA’s management board.

The teachers were urged to keep spring break pictures off social media because it could hurt the union's argument that it's currently unsafe to return to the classroom, according to a screenshot that appeared to be from a roughly 5,700 member Facebook group titled, "UTLA FB GROUP- Members Only."

My husband and I have worn masks properly and consistently and yet we both got Covid. Fortunately, we didn’t die. My respiratory therapist in the hospital told me that 95% of her patients have no idea how Covid found them. I don’t know if all of them wore masks properly and consistently as we did. It’s also possible that we (and the 95%) touched our faces without realizing it or didn’t wash our hands carefully enough. We will never know. But we will keep wearing masks and doing our very best with other mitigations.

A 2% reduction in cases is considered statistically significant by the CDC for good reason. If 2% of a population of 100K did not get Covid because of a mask mandate, that’s 2000 fewer cases. In the small city of about 200K near me that’s 4000 fewer cases, not an insignificant amount.

My concern is that misinterpreting the CDC report will reduce the number of masks worn by those who are anti-mask and cause even more states to abandon mask mandates at a time when more contagious variants are proliferating.
