My husband and I have worn masks properly and consistently and yet we both got Covid. Fortunately, we didn’t die. My respiratory therapist in the hospital told me that 95% of her patients have no idea how Covid found them. I don’t know if all of them wore masks properly and consistently as we did. It’s also possible that we (and the 95%) touched our faces without realizing it or didn’t wash our hands carefully enough. We will never know. But we will keep wearing masks and doing our very best with other mitigations.

A 2% reduction in cases is considered statistically significant by the CDC for good reason. If 2% in a population of 100K did not get Covid because of a mask mandate, that’s 2000 fewer cases. In the small city of about 200K near me that’s 4000 fewer cases, not an insignificant amount.

My concern is that misinterpreting the CDC report will reduce the number of masks worn by those who are anti-mask and cause even more states to abandon mask mandates at a time when more contagious variants are proliferating.

I think there will always be people who do not put a mask on, whatever the CDC success rate numbers.
Some people have actual psychological and physiological reasons for it. Other people will just "not feel like" putting one on.
Like everything in this country, the reasons for non-mask wearers are as diverse as our population. <modsnip: Politicizing>

Yes, a 2% DAILY reduction in numbers is significant over time. Each and every day a decrease of 2% vs. an exponential increase is remarkable.

Thank you! Science speaks louder than paranoia I hope
Truly amazing that all of the millions of these effective and routine vaccines were never questioned or researched on cell lines prior to J&J’s COVID-19 one
The religious argument against vaccines that use anything related to aborted fetal cells was around long before covid. It’s nothing new.

And I didn’t even calculate it daily, so it’s even more than I came up with, I think (not a math whiz here).

I had an interesting FT with a US friend today. We were speaking of covid, our respective vaccination situations, when we each would get our vaccinations , blah blah blah ....

It was the most frustrating conversation ever. It is difficult to speak with someone who makes everything about covid into politics and bad 'science'. I can't imagine what he is reading, and where he gets his misinformation from.
I promised to send him some links to some scientifc journals and reliable science facts.

It was new to me! I’d never heard anything like it prior to this J&J hysteria
Getting my first shot tomorrow and don’t care how it’s made as long as safe and effective

I always find it interesting to talk to people who have no clue how they caught Covid. Personally, the contact tracing I have seen seems superficial and minimal.

I bet with a skilled interviewer, who used a multifaceted approach, of interview, and review of cellphone data, could potentially discover a trend. Or where people were most likely exposed.

There was no contact tracing done for us that I recall. I did receive a call from a nurse at the public health department after my positive test, but I don’t think my DH did. I honestly don’t remember what we talked about, although she may have asked where we had been—me nowhere; DH only to a drug/variety store, double masked. So we assume he may have picked it up somehow at that store, but there is no way to determine how.

I'm so glad you're here with us and feeling better~! I have a couple of friends who got COVID and don't know how they got it, but we hypothesize that a household member who was reasonably careful must have had contact with COVID and gotten it - although asymptomatically. Asymptomatic but very infectious people seem to often be at the core of this. So, for example, in a drug/variety store there could have been a clerk with no mask or an ill-fitting mask and who was highly contagious (keeping in mind that no mask is 100% effective; and that eyes are another area of entry). Restroom use in stores can be another virion-intensive activity that people don't always think about.

Just today, a COVID ICU nurse confirmed that they have been working very hard to make sure that staff are not in contact with COVID+ patients (even in full protective gear) for periods exceeding around 40-50 minutes (due to the viral load issue) and that they have been alternating hours on the floor in light of this - and no one has gotten COVID.

OTOH, someone I know with a particular autoimmune disease got COVID despite only going for doctor's visits, disinfecting groceries, etc., etc. She thinks she got it at the doctor's office when bloodwork was done (lab tech was using only a surgical mask, not an N-95).

It's very hard not knowing - but I"m so glad that you and hubby are doing okay. How are you feeling now??

Yes, it had to have been something/someone at the store that infected him asymptomatically. And our doctor thinks he got it first, gave it to me and then became symptomatic after I did. It occurred to me that he could have walked through aerosol droplets and touched his mask, touched his face or eyes before washing his hands, which he is scrupulous about, but there can always be a slip-up.

We are both feeling much better. My cough is gone and so is our fatigue so all is well. Thanks for checking in. :) Stay well!

I have recently returned to subbing, in the high school that I retired from (after 11 months of not subbing). This past Sunday, I was contact traced by the principal. She explained to me that a student in one of the classes I covered tested positive. She asked me where I sat, if I interacted closely with any student and then told me I followed correct protocol and it was determined I was not required to quarantine as I was safely far enough away from the student.

There were only 4-5 students in the room and they are individually surrounded by plexiglass. Other precautions in the room are assigned seats for each student. Air purifiers set for the duration of class time and all wearing masks. Also, the desks are wiped after each class leaves and before the next small group enters, even though no desks are shared back-to-back between the 4 classes that use the room.

Also, since I'm double-dosed vaccinated, there would be different requirements for my need to quarantine. I did feel that she (the principal) did a good job of contact tracing (I was on a list of calls to be made) and that the school is doing a fantastic job of protecting kids and teachers/staff.

Officials confident in COVID vaccine as CT reports first UK variant death (ctpost.com)

While Connecticut has reported its first death associated with the highly contagious UK variant of the coronavirus, officials remain confident the vaccine will offer ample protection.

A state Department of Public health official said Tuesday the person was between the ages of 30 and 40, but could not disclose any other information, including where the person lived or if they had traveled before becoming ill. The official said the person was among 81 confirmed Connecticut cases associated with what is known as the B.1.1.7 variant of the virus.
