The second shot may be to ensure that it lasts longer. I’m not sure if they know how long the protection lasts. I was told to wait 90 days after having the monoclonal antibody infusion at the end of January. When I researched why, it was to make sure the antibodies didn’t interfere with the vaccine, but the 90 days was not based on any tests, just guesswork. Most people I know are not having really bad reactions to the second shot, so I plan to get both when my 90 days are up at the end of April. I do understand your concern though because in a way we are all guinea pigs!

I will get the 2nd shot- with some trepidation!!! yes we all are guinea pigs!!!!
My thought process is this: This is the only way out of this horror- there is no plan B- there is no other way out-

They say it is because you need the booster for longevity. I was just reading something tonight that said while one shot is good, the immunity from a single dose only lasts for 80-90-120 days.
We need the 2nd shot to prolong the effectiveness. To build a stronger resistance.
.

Thanks for that info: it makes sense

"It's available for kids 6 months old to 12 years old," said Dr. Steve Plimpton, a principal investigator in the Moderna study for kids. "They get the two-shot vaccine just like normal. It is an open-label study being done for kids in that age group. They will know they're getting the actual Moderna vaccine. They're not going to get a placebo."

Arizona kids can get COVID vaccine through Moderna study starting next week.

At 8:00 into the video from yesterday, Dr. Campbell addresses the 2-3 deaths due to blood clots / AZ vaccine. (as always, if you don't have time to view you can read his notes below the video)

"thromboembolic events in vaccinated people is no higher than that seen in the general population"...

22 cases of thromboembolic events / three million people vaccinated with AZ vaccine in the EU. Dr. Campbell is not concerned with the number of cases/death, and thinks that this is a "story", but should not be a "story" and is really NOT a concern at all.

Normal incidence rate: Avg women/men is 120/100,000
Men, 130 per 100,000 per year
Women, 110 per 100,000 per year

That's ~10 per month per 100,000
That's ~100 per million per month

Therefore, for 3 million of the population 300 thromboembolic events expected per month, yet vaccinated group of 3 million has seen only 22. So, less than expected have happened.

Novavax vaccine 96% effective against original coronavirus, 86% vs British variant in UK trial
In a smaller trial conducted in South Africa - where volunteers were primarily exposed to another newer, more contagious variant widely circulating there and spreading around the world - the Novavax vaccine was 55% effective, based on people without HIV, but still fully prevented severe illness.

Will we need a COVID booster? | VERIFY | 11alive.com

"On the CDC's frequently asked questions page it asks, "how long does protection from a COVID-19 vaccine last?" The CDC says it's unknown how long the protection will last after getting the vaccine.

The pharmaceutical companies Pfzier and Moderna are working with the FDA to test a booster vaccine to protect against the mutations, like the variant first identified in South African.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says a COVID booster shot is a real possibility. That's why the companies are starting "clinical trials of a booster shot against the specific variant in question. And in this case, it's the 315 from South Africa," Fauci said. "

MOO, I thought that the Brazil variant was the worst as to cross protection... will keep an eye out for more info to share

I hope he is okay: Let us know what the doctor says: It does make one pause a bit at the thought of getting the 2nd shot (which I am due for in 14 days)-- I read that Moderna has 92 percent efficacy fourteen days after the first shot so my question would be, why do we need the 2nd shot????

The Moderna COVID-19 (mRNA-1273) vaccine: what you need to know

I often explain the booster to folks who bring in new puppies for vaccinations. It's called the Prime-Boost strategy for getting a really good, long term immunity. The first shot primes your immune system, and the second shot cranks up your antibody response so that you can get long term protection. The booster is timed so that the response from the prime vaccine is at its peak, and that provides the best possible response.

This is hopeful. We really can't get herd immunity without vaccinating kids.

Has anyone read of any work being done on vaccinations for pregnant women?

LATEST: Italy to impose new lockdown for most regions as Covid 'third wave' takes hold - The Local

BREAKING: 11 March 2021
Most of Italy is to effectively be placed under lockdown – in either the ‘red’ or ‘orange’ zone – from Monday, as the health ministry announced tough new restrictions for much of the country following a fresh surge in infections.
New restrictions will be in place until at least Easter, when all of Italy would be under ‘red’ zone restrictions over the weekend of April 3-5, the prime minister’s office has confirmed.
The only exception to the restrictions is Sardinia, which is Italy’s only ‘white zone’.

There is recent surveillance data that says that Pfizer and Moderna vacs are okay.

Though I can't access the full article.

Pregnant women can safely get vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for Covid-19, surveillance data from the US CDC suggests.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that “COVID-19 vaccines should not be withheld from pregnant individuals.”

They better be. They blocked Australia getting our vaccine order from the EU because they wanted it.

U.S. reaches COVID-19 vaccine milestone of 100 million shots

The U.S. has now administered over 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine — 101.1 million, to be precise — according to figures posted Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That equates to more than 35 million Americans fully vaccinated — 10.5% of the total U.S. population. Nearly 66 million, or almost 20% of the total population, have gotten at least one dose. Nearly one-third of Americans age 65 and older are fully vaccinated.

It looks as though the US is getting ready to have a surplus, so maybe we should send some to Australia. We have no need for more vaccines than we have people, I shouldn't think. What good is stockpiling when people around the world are still at risk?

COVID-19 vaccine, scarce now, could be in surplus across US by April
