Marguarita.... doesn't it just make you sick, how people (especially Americans) just don't understand that we are "of the world", and must pay attention to the world? The situation in Brazil, demands help in any way possible....

The world desperately needs vaccines, if 40% of AMericans don't even want them, then we must ship them off shore to help others who do. This bothers me every day.

Let's face the ugly facts: Americans are totally American centered- for so many Americans, no other people exist on the planet. They don't care or think about any other people, except in this country. As it pertains about caring about fellow Americans, well, forget that. Just look at all the states opening up restaurants and bars, and basically living like we did before the pandemic. The airlines are packed with travelers---my step-daughter and her family just went to Florida for a vacation (staying in our condo)--- going out every night to eat in restaurants- no masks- oh, they have two sons, ages 13 and 16 - I would not be surprised if they are asymptomatic carriers. I keep my mouth shut- there is nothing I can say that would give them pause regarding their behavior.

It’s sooo weird, nhm, I used to watch cooking shows every single day before the pandemic, Top Chef, Master Chef, and restaurant shows like Diners, Drive Ins and Dives & Beat Bobby Flay - however, I haven’t been able to watch a single one since the pandemic, because it reminds me in a sad way of how life used to be...

I know what you mean: when I watch those shows and see how we lived before the pandemic I get very sad.

Isn't it just so painful... .. there are a lot of people who just accept our huge mistakes as "acceptable" or "normal".
Ohhhh how we could have brought the country together on this one.

There are still so many surprise yet to come.
This article today regarding Florida'a high number of covid Breakthrough cases (AFTER full vaccination) is making me really stew even more....

Volusia County has six documented breakthrough cases while Sumter County has six and Lake County has
26 cases, according to emails from each county’s spokesperson.

Dozens in Central Florida contract COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated

The vaccine is not 100% but it should prevent severe illness--- hospitalizations and death. If we start hearing about people who were vaccinated being hospitalized and died, that would be a great concern

The pandemic was a danger not only because of deaths (that's bad enough, of course!) but because the danger of overcrowding hospitals and breaking down the healthcare system.

If a hospital is filled with covid patients, then that means the hospital cannot handle all the other patients who need medical help - like from car accidents and injuries, heart attacks, chronic illnesses, etc. etc. etc.

It's possible we might see some rare hospitalizations and complications from covid after vaccines, but covid will not overrun the hospitals anymore putting all of us at risk for lack of available medical care.

Bummer. Called to schedule an appointment and my doctor is out of the office due to covid.

She got covid last September and had to be hospitalized. She has tried to come back to work a couple times but had to leave due to still having symptoms.

Just a few more months and she would have been vaccinated.

We are so close to getting protected- I feel bad for people who get the virus before being able to get vaccinated. I hope she recovers but we know about the post covid symptoms( ( I prefer the description of post covid syndrome to long - hauler)- The term Long hauler doesn't give the medical condition the seriousness of the problem that it deserves IMO.

On the vaccination home front...

Our daughter and her husband (age 50) received their first dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines (respectively) today in San Diego. They went to different locations, hence the different brands. Our daughter said she had to hold back tears just before she got it because she was so relieved and excited. They are moving to a very loose state in late May and wanted to have their second doses well beforehand as they deal with movers and flying.

They’re ahead of us (age 75/76) here in Oregon because we had the monoclonal antibody infusion when we had Covid and have to wait 90 days for the vaccine. But the good news for us is that we made our appointments online today for May 3! Woo hoo!!

I don’t know why my oldest dd in her 30s got so lucky, but she was able to secure an appt for (no, she did not cheat) and now has already gotten the J&J vaccine. She, too, told me she was tearing up and the one administering the shot asked her if she was ok, thinking maybe she was scared of needles. Dd told her, “No, I’m just so happy and relieved to finally get vaccinated.” She was surprised, herself, how much it meant to her.

I love how seriously she has been taking the virus, and how proactive she has been throughout this year. It’s good to hear these counter stories to those stories of people that don’t take it serious enough, which are disheartening to hear, to say the least.

Cheers to your daughter and her husband! And for you and your dh for your scheduled vaccine appt. Hooray!

There have apparently been 2 (Washington state) but the circumstances are unusual (very elderly is my understanding, as well as underlying health conditions and may have gotten COVID before full immunity set in).

So it's a good time to remember that for a health 50-60 year old, 2 weeks post second shot of Pfizer or Moderna is roughly "full immunity," but for some in that same group, it's 4 weeks. There's a lot of discussion in the medical community about people feeling relieved after the first shot and letting their guard down. Probably okay for a 30-something to do, but we older people should wait the time out. I will resume a few normal activities (masked if around others) next week (2.5 weeks after my second shot) but I won't be going to indoor restaurants any time soon.

If you're over 85, I think that you'd want to avoid any situation where you could get a high initial load of COVID (such as having a 2 hour indoor face to face conversation with an asymptomatic carrier or having to be a care situation where someone was right next to your face - such as getting one's hair done, indoors or out, IMO). We still have a lot of unvaccinated people who do not understand how important a well-fitting mask is (those paper masks are not enough if the client/patient is in a vulnerable health category).

Being around adolescents is a special risk, as they are unlikely to have symptoms but can be ready spreaders of COVID, due to their adult-like lung capacity.

Two weeks ago today since I had my first Zeneca jab and I do believe my long covid symptoms have improved. I havent had the crushing tiredness for at least a week now. I darent celebrate just yet because I have read that for some people it's short lived relief, but I cant tell you how glad I am to feel like the old me is emerging. No news yet re the clinic referral, I think they are probably overrun.

Anyway, all good so far :)

So glad to hear this! Vaccines are definitely supposed to help with long Covid symptoms. I hope and pray you are on the mend from here on out (that seems to be the case with most of the Long COVID people who are vaccinated).

In Ontario, patients aged 59 years and younger currently make up 46 per cent of new COVID-19 admissions to intensive care units (ICU) ...

Health officials in British Columbia are also growing concerned, as an increasing number of people in their 30s around the province are being admitted to the hospital, and even the ICU.

‘Hit the hardest’: Why COVID-19 cases are rising among young Canadians

Something is going on in Washington/British Columbia and Michigan/Ontario. It's really strange and so far, no new variants found. Could it be lack of Vitamin D? It's really concerning.

CDC changes school guidance, allowing desks to be closer

800.jpeg

The new guidance:
— Removes recommendations for plastic shields or other barriers between desks. “We don't have a lot of evidence of their effectiveness” in preventing transmission, Massetti said.

— Advises at least 3 feet of space between desks in elementary schools, even in towns and cities where community spread is high, so long as students and teachers wear masks and take other precautions.

— Says spacing can also be 3 feet in middle and high schools, so long as there is not a high level of spread in the community. If there is, the distance should be at least 6 feet.

The CDC said 6 feet should still be maintained in common areas, such as school lobbies, and when masks can't be worn, such as when eating.

Also, students should be kept 6 feet apart in situations where there are a lot of people talking, cheering or singing, all of which can expel droplets containing the coronavirus. That includes chorus practice, assemblies and sports events.

Teachers and other adults should continue to stay 6 feet from one another and from students, the CDC said.

The CDC guidance was problematic for many schools that traditionally had 25, 30 or more children per classroom in closely grouped desks. Some schools adopted complicated schedules. For example, half a class might come to school on some days, and the other half on other days.

Some schools stopped using lockers and staggered when different grades could move between classes.

Giani Clarke, 18, a senior at Wilson High School in West Lawn, Pa., takes a test in her AP statistics class earlier this month. The desks are doubled as a way to provide more social distancing.

Yes, we do have variants in BC. I’m just watching our provincial health care briefing on tv. We have B117, ( wherever that’s from) the South African variant, and also the dreaded Brazil variant. I believe Ontario has variants as well but I’ll let someone from Ontario address that.

B117 is the UK variant. Highly contagious. It is the variant we see most here in Australia ... likely because many of our returning travellers are coming in from the UK. Fortunately, they all go right into hotel quarantine.

The incidence of returning travellers testing positive for covid is quite high here, despite them being required to have a negative covid test within 3 days prior to boarding the flight to Australia.
Not sure what that means - they caught the virus in that possible 3-day window, that the virus developed during the long flight back?

Why Michigan health officials are so far avoiding new restrictions amid Covid rise.
As of Thursday Michigan's second day atop national rankings for per capita new cases
over the previous week. The governor has opted against issuing new state wide
restrictions to limit gatherings or businesses to stem the spread of the virus. The Thumb
region of Michigan appears to be experiencing the largest jump in cases in Michigan.
Public health experts are tying the increases in spread in Michigan to residents
dropping their guards early, and Covid variants that spread more quickly from
person to person.

The number of adults hospitalized with Covid -19 in Michigan reached 2526 on thursday, a 128% increase from the total 2 weeks earlier. As of Wednesday, 2.7 million Michigan residents, 34% of the adult population had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 1.7 million residents, 21% of the adult population, had received
their full vaccination. On Monday, all individuals over the age of 16 in the state, became eligible for vaccines.

There is uncertainty about what will happen with Michigan's hospitalizations, cases
and death numbers in the coming weeks.
