COVID-19 cases spike in Michigan, fueled by infections among kids

“According to state data, since February 19, average daily new COVID-19 cases among children under 10 jumped 230%, more than any other age group. The second-highest increase in infections is in the 10 to 19 age group, which saw cases rise 227%. The trends in these groups exceed that of the state as a whole.“

Virus Surge in Michigan Is a ‘Gut Punch’ to Hopes of Pandemic’s End

Michigan Gov. Whitmer concerned over spring break impact on COVID spread

Michigan coronavirus cases up to 683,793; Death toll now at 16,161

“Testing has been steady around 35,000 diagnostic tests reported per day on average, with the 7-day positive rate above 14% as of Friday, the highest since early December. The state has reported an up-tick in hospitalizations over the last several weeks.”

Eta gah sorry for double post

Aah yes! Your country nailed this. Canadians aren't openly resistant to guidelines, but they sure can be passively resistant. We could have done a better job. When this is over, and the evaluations start coming in, we'll know where the breakdowns happened. We can likely start writing that report right now.
You guys are taking a beating in some areas, very sad to hear. I will continue to follow you guys closely. Going in to check on BC & Ontario now.

Urgent message from margarita JMO.

I can’t advise you guys enough to get ready for the surge, B117 specifically atm (with P1 and others on the horizon).

The world is on fire and surging.
See my updates here.

The variants are a game changer.

This is a whole new pandemic.

If you have not been vaccinated yet, double, triple down on your awareness and precautions. JMO. I hope you guys trust me by this point, if I’m wrong, I am wrong and you can all throw tomatoes at me when this over. But from my heart, I am begging, in tears, like the CDC Director was. Nobody wants to listen to Dr. O’s latest podcast I posted with my urgent message last night (except @SouthAussie), fine so be it, :D:D, - but considering this is all a matter of life and death, I am using this opportunity to advise all of you that this is FAR from over. We know we can look at what is happening in other countries to anticipate what is to come here. B117 (and others) are on our doorstep, it’s already come inside. Children in school are going to be a main vector of transmission, as they are now highly infectious. IANAD, but this is what Dr. O says.

All I’m saying is don’t take any chances yet, if you can avoid getting covid, pleeeease take ALL the precautions you can to avoid getting it, until you can get vaccinated. Thankfully, many of us here are already vaccinated or in the process, and this is good because you will be safe from B117. But as Dr. O says, you don’t want to die 3 days before you get your vaccine.

So my heartfelt message to all of you is do not let pandemic fatigue get you, do not get complacent or comfortable. There’s a BIG STORM on our doorstep.

Yes vaccinations are good and provide hope, and that is being distributed and implementEd to the best of the Biden administration’s ability, but not enough people are vaccinated right now and there is a LOT of wood left to burn, metaphorically speaking. Yes the vaccines will offer some buffering here, but on the larger scale, it’s like Dr. O said, “You can’t build the Empire State Building in one week”.

Anyway, I wouldn’t feel right today if I didn’t send you all this message. I have said my peace.

BUMP

THANK YOU @margarita25 for your message! I certainly do trust your opinion and have since my first day on this thread back in February 2020. I listened to the first 40 minutes of Dr O so far and IMO he is spot on. Even though I have a degree of immunity from my encounter with Covid in late January (plus a monoclonal antibody infusion), and will receive my vaccination starting May 3, there is no way I will consider that “permission” to slack off. Dr O has confirmed my instincts, as has Dr Walensky. The variants are coming and they aren’t going to cut us any slack just because we want our “normal” life back again. Keep beating that drum dear friend!

Oh no, LadyL.

This is exactly the kind of stress we are all going to have to face as we reopen. Is your husband vaccinated? I can't remember if you are.

YAY! It's such a glorious feeling when our kids get vaccinated as well. We are stoked here. I have just one close family member still unvaccinated, and of course, the actual kids - but everyone is still shielding, so we're good.

We may stop by on Easter! (I'm fully vaccinated as of today!) DH has another 10 days ago, but should be at 90%. Both daughters are fully vaccinated too (nurse and teacher).

In another few weeks, where I live, we should be moving to our next phase of reopening, because the first two phases have gone well, with steady declines in both case numbers and in deaths.

Unfortunately, most people will not watch it and I'd be very surprised if local school authorities are aware of this or watching it. The scientific side of the story isn't told with explosive headlines. For example, Canadian newspapers have articles on how schools are opening (in which are embedded stories about entire districts shutting down due to B.1.1.1

Sigh.

we're going the opposite direction here in Ontario
back in the red zone of lockdown
and no, we are not eligible yet for the vaccination

The good thing is I heard last night somewhere jmo one of your leaders speaking - it sounds like he is being proactive and is going to try to do everything to protect your province.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order Friday prohibiting businesses from requiring customers to show proof they have received COVID vaccines and preventing the state government from issuing so-called "vaccine passports."

Why it matters: Immunization credentials for the coronavirus have become a controversial subject, especially with Republican governors, though proof of vaccination could speed international travel and economic reopening plans.

What they're saying: DeSantis' order says requiring immunization credentials "would create two classes of citizens based on vaccination."

"Businesses in Florida are prohibited from requiring patrons or customers to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination or post-transmission recovery to gain access to, entry upon, or service from the business," the order states.

Hope it’s okay to post a Friday happy hour video, for the sake of old times, when this was all first going down:

Remember when the 1918 flu had that second wave when the virus mutated? Last year I said I was worried about, with an increase in severity and effect on kids? Well, here we are. Jmo. We are on the eve, imo.

I can't wait for the "step back" retraction statement.

The cruise lines, feel like a "Vaccine Passport" will be the only thing to save their business. And cruiselines were BIG business in Florida.

What is a vaccine passport?

I just don't understand the US at times. It is as if many don't want to get rid of the virus. They just want things to be 'normal' and if people keep keeling over and dying from the virus, and keep getting very, very sick, it is no big deal.

The US is still experiencing over 1,000 covid deaths every day. That is hugely significant.
In one day the US is still having more covid deaths than we have had during the entire pandemic. It has been absolutely ages since we have had a covid death.

I just can't get my head around the mentality.

‘Vaccine passport’ idea causes political uproar in the US

hey, I have been fairly scared from day 1 and am not eligible for vaccine before Monday- checked websites to see if there is anyway to sign up on Monday or the days after and all the sites say "out of vaccine; check back later, shortages, etc." Am very scared of the variants and variants to come...

How frustrating and scary! Don’t give up. In Oregon people can call 211 to get info and an appointment. An 80 year old non-techie friend of mine got her appointment that way. Maybe check your state website to see if there is a similar provision, and at least confirm whether the websites are giving accurate info. Here’s hoping. Keep us posted. Hugs! :)

as concerned as I am, Monday starts with "over 55s," so the 16-55 folks are not even on the roster yet. I did call the state registration line to see if I was still in their system because I pre-registered months ago and they said "yes," so I have done what I was supposed to do. Everyone I know who was older and eligible earlier has had problems, except for a dentist and a person I know who works in a lab- they seem to have been efficiently given appointments. It is just the stress of being told how important this is, and then the inability to do it.

I felt that same frustration. Finally, I did get an appointment. But even now that I am vaccinated, I am not sure about going back to the gym, out to dinner, or doing any travel.

Not sure that the vaccines will work on the new variants.

I have always figured I’d remain cautious, and Dr O’s podcast that @margarita25 posted confirmed it for me. He did say the vaccines will work against the B117 variant, but who knows about the others?! Even though my dh and I have had Covid, I think there is too little known for us to take chances, even after we get our vaccine on May 3. I’m not a risk-taker by nature and neither is he.

Absolutely stressful! You’re doing all you can do and if you’re anything like many of us, you will continue to take precautions even after you get your vaccination. Hang in there.
