The UK’s Labour shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said almost 100,000 people had flown between India and the UK during January and February, as he accused the British government of not doing enough to keep out coronavirus mutations.

" ....according to data from the Civil Aviation Authority and other international air passenger sources, 631,500 air travellers arrived in the UK in January, with only around 1% undertaking a hotel quarantine.
This British reopening is being put at risk by ministers’ reckless refusal to protect our borders against Covid."

Well, our quarantine-free travel bubble started this morning with NZ.

And they are speaking of vaccinated Aussies possibly being able to travel to Cook Islands and Singapore later in the year ... maybe in July.

The atmosphere is very buoyant, and the TV stations are all showing pics of planes being pushed back ready to fly, (masked) dancers displaying happy dances in airports, (masked) people excitedly waiting to board their flights to NZ.

Otters at Georgia Aquarium test positive for COVID-19
more at link
Some of the Georgia Aquarium's most playful and popular mammals have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Asian small-clawed otters had been showing mild symptoms like sneezing, coughing and lack of energy. Veterinarians believe the otters caught the virus from an asymptomatic staff members.

The otters haven't had any contact with guests at the Atlanta facility, so they shouldn't post any risk of spreading coronavirus to visitors.

Oh noooo :( I love otters.

I really think Sars Co-V-2 is going to become another endemic coronavirus, especially if there is a large wild reservoir.

IMO they should forget using politicians and use celebrities that are more trusted by Americans. For example I just saw a program about Sully Sullenberger, who landed a plane on the Hudson River and saved all the passengers: he became an instant celebrity and beloved by most Americans. A message from someone like that would go a longer way than a message from Obama or even Biden.

Wonder if the staff members had been vaccinated.

Wonder if the staff members had been vaccinated.
Let's remember that the virus can still be spread by vaccinated people. The vaccine prevents a person from getting extremely sick and dying, but doesn't prevent the spread entirely.

So to prevent spread, we shouldn’t be gathering indoors without masks, hugging grandparents, etc - even if we’ve been vaccinated since we could spread it to those who are unvaccinated or in poor health (like family members in nursing homes)?

If everyone is vaccinated, it seems safe. Here's info currently on the CDC website:

COVID-19 Vaccination

"Although COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting sick, scientists are still learning how well vaccines prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to others, even if you do not have symptoms. Early data show the vaccines do help keep people with no symptoms from spreading COVID-19, but we are learning more as more people get vaccinated.

We’re also still learning how long COVID-19 vaccines protect people.

For these reasons, people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should keep taking precautions in public places, until we know more, like wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart from others, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and washing your hands often."

Travel advisories: State Department to list 80% of countries as 'Do Not Travel' as it updates advisory system to align with CDC - CNNPolitics

The State Department announced Monday that it would begin to update its travel advisories to more closely align with those from the [URL='https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/18/health/us-coronavirus-sunday/index.html']Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
, a change that "will result in a significant increase in the number of countries at Level 4: Do Not Travel, to approximately 80% of countries worldwide."

"This does not imply a reassessment of the current health situation in a given country, but rather reflects an adjustment in the State Department's Travel Advisory system to rely more on CDC's existing epidemiological assessments," the department said in a media note.

It’s shocking to see the number of dark red “do not travel countries” on this CDC travel recommendations map and list, including the U.S. As always, congratulations to Australia and New Zealand, among the very few low risk countries.

Weird. Michigan wasn’t even in the top five of new case numbers ...
(Eta I assume it’s a data delayed reporting thing)

Early Moderna COVID vaccine trials show doses 'are very safe and very efficacious'
Moderna COVID vaccine could receive emergency authorization for children ages 12 to 15 within ‘weeks’

more at link
After months of clinical trials examining how Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine affects children 12 to 15 years old, Dr. Robert Finberg of UMass Medical School in Worcester anticipates emergency authorization for the population within weeks.

UMass Medical School researchers began enrolling adolescents ages 12 through 17 in February. The trials were expected to enroll 3,000 adolescents at up to 15 sites nationwide.

They are now fully enrolled and researchers are waiting for the data to return.

“So far the clinical trials have been very successful,” Finberg said. “I think we’re confident that they will continue to be. These vaccines look like they are very safe and very efficacious.”
