He first discussed primary vaccine failure, "when the body actually doesn't mount adequate immune response for a number of reasons," he explained, listing them as "immune status, health status, age medications you're on, or something wrong with the vaccine storage delivery composition."

"Secondary vaccine failure may occur when immunity fades over time," he explained. This is essentially why we get the flu shot yearly.

Third, he mentioned failure due to a mutation. "Now a vaccine may fail also if a person is exposed to a new or a different strain or a variant"

Dr. Fauci then pointed out an extremely important fact. "Even if a vaccine fails to protect against infection, it often protects against serious disease"

I got a shot of this last night

I just realised that you probably meant that you had your J&J shot last night (sorry, bit slow here today ).

Congrats for getting your vaccine! And please don't worry about the blood clot thing. When I had my AstraZeneca shot, my DD (nurse) told me to just make sure I had my daily walks for a while. Keep the circulation moving. She was super happy I got my shot, and we didn't worry.

Another friend I know who has some circulation issues went ahead and had her shot, and wore her compression stockings for a while afterwards. She feels fine, as well.

I am going to go ahead and get my 2nd shot when that appointment rolls around.

So if you are wanting to get together with older family members such as grandparents- you still need to take the same precautions as before vaccination- everyone wear masks, outdoors, socially distance, etc.

All I’ve seen regarding a variant cluster here was reference to “a cluster on cape cod” In an article a week or so ago. I have not been able to find anything further detailed. ( which is weird maybe I’m just missing it) because I was definitely curious about it myself.

I have been trying to follow as well..... it is such a significant number of cases of the P-1. Where are the updates??? There seems to be a real ban on reporting on this....

But I had read this article, that was quite informative. It was written almost a month ago!!!, and indicates, but does not identify a woman who was diagnosed with the Brazil P-1. I had not realized how high the Brazilian population is in Massachusetts. Third only to China and Dominican REpublic..... So that sizable population is probably attached to much more travel to and from Brazil.

But I had read this article, that was quite informative. It was written almost a month ago!!!, and indicates, but does not identify a woman who was diagnosed with the Brazil P-1. I had not realized how high the Brazilian population is in Massachusetts. Third only to China and Dominican REpublic..... So that sizable population is probably attached to much more travel to and from Brazil.

Variants will happen....but they don't spread across the globe on their own. People are bringing the variants from place to place.

Head of CDC advises Governor Whitmer to shut down the state: Whitmer is not going to do it. To be honest, at this point I don't think people will cooperate anyway. What I think is really happening is that people are getting together in small groups, parties, dinners, etc. and this is at least partly responsible for the huge surge in cases. Even if the state shuts down people are going to continue to live like there is no pandemic and Governor Whitmer knows it.

I don't think they'll cooperate, either. The message that they need to take precautions just isn't getting through.

Yesterday morning, our local City leaders voted NOT to lift the mask mandate, and within a few hours, disgruntled citizens had started recall petitions for those commissioners. On a local Facebook group, they ranted and cursed and swore not to wear masks.

This morning I saw a group of them are trying to get a maskless protest organized. The majority are young adults who seem to think the world revolves around them. At this point, I can't see a way to change their minds -- or their "me, me, me" attitudes.

I think it is very possible that Dr Fauci is not confident that we know for sure that the vaccines are good against the variants. And perhaps variants are developing so quickly that he is not confident that the current vaccines will be good against near-future variants.

One thing I feel sure of is that Dr Fauci has always been trying to keep people safe ... so when he speaks, we should listen.

This is what I feel as well. His cautiousness is largely due to the variants potential harm, and certainly now the delay of the J&J vaccine. Everything cannot move swimmingly....

This is why I am comfortable with the seemingly contradictions... just part of the flow.

It seems odd to pause the J & J considering it was only 6 out of 7 million who developed this rare blood clot. With Pfizer/Moderna there have been at least 36 people who developed serious platelet issues to the point that Doc in Florida died, but they have not paused Pfizer or Moderna. I appreciate their caution though.

The strain...remains more contagious than original strains of the virus however, according to the study in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Last March, friends and neighbors began stopping Emily Smith in her town outside of Waco, Texas, with questions about the coronavirus. An epidemiologist at Baylor University, Smith knows all too well how viruses are transmitted. But as the wife of a pastor and as a woman of faith, she also holds a trusted position in her community, and she would speak to those who asked about why she personally thought social distancing was a moral choice.

As the weeks wore on, the questions kept coming: “What does flatten the curvemean?” “Is it safe for my child to kick a soccer ball outside with a friend?” So she started a Facebook page and called herself the Friendly Neighbor Epidemiologist. She adopted “Love thy neighbor” as the page’s credo.

Smith wrote from the perspective of a scientist but also a wife and mother. ....

A year later, she has more than 76,000 followers on her Facebook page, and her blog gets 1 million to 3 million hits a week.

But as her digital footprint has grown—she now has followers all over the world, including a strong contingent among evangelical mothers living in the South—so has the amount of misinformation that pops up in the comments of her posts. That, too, she tries to approach with a “Love thy neighbor” ethos.

“They come in with this bunk science, and I still try to be neighborly instead of jumping all over them,” she says. It’s not always easy. When commenters suggest that wearing a mask “signals you don’t have faith in God” or that attending church in person is a must because “worshipping is worth dying for,” she will post studies showing how distancing and mask wearing can save lives. If they spread misinformation, like that European countries have banned the AstraZeneca vaccine, she explains that those countries have paused, not banned it. If they start making racist comments, she blocks them.

Smith, who has two children, draws fortitude from a text chain with about 30 women, mostly moms, all with M.D.s or Ph.D.s. Among them are Katelyn Jetelina, who operates a page called Your Local Epidemiologist (181,000 followers) and the all-female team of doctors and scientists who run the page Dear Pandemic (76,000 followers). She calls them her “gal pals.” They have spent the little spare time they have during the pandemic trying to provide their communities with information about a virus that, especially in the beginning, few people understood. Now with vaccines available to Americans who meet an expanding range of eligibility requirements, they are trying to both demystify the science and debunk conspiracy theories.

I think it's incredibly odd, myself. As you say, the Moderna vaccine is causing more side effects and it really made my mom sick after her second shot. I got the J&J shot and never had an issue--not even a sore arm. I don't want to put anyone at risk, but it seems as though the vaccine is more beneficial than it is risky. JMOO
