Half of all new COVID-19 cases are variant strain | 9news.com

COLORADO, USA — State leaders say anyone who gets COVID-19 in Colorado right now has a pretty good chance of contracting a mutated version of the virus.

“If you contract COVID-19 today, it’s is more likely that you are exposed and have contracted a variant strain,” said Governor Jared Polis during a press conference on Tuesday.

“About half the specimens we're testing weekly are the B.1.1.7 variant,” he said, referencing the strain first discovered in the U.K.

Testing for COVID is a different process from determining whether each case is a variant. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) says the state lab is currently conducting genome sequencing on about 7% of positive COVID-19 tests to determine if they are variant cases.“

We are having a bit of a dilemma with hotel quarantine workers at the moment (in my state). 10-15% of them haven't been vaccinated, their choice. And that creates such a danger for the community.

I am not sure what they are going to do about it. Pass legislation that all quarantine workers must be covid vaccinated? Create policy that all quarantine workers must be covid vaccinated? I think the govt is looking into their legal choices.

Perhaps if there is no legal choice, they might just 'find' another reason to lay them off from their job. Like make their position redundant, and create a newly titled position for the same kind of tasks (and give that newly titled position to someone else who is vaccinated). That is a common way of getting rid of hard-to-get-rid-of people, it seems.

It seems so counterproductive for "quarantine workers" not to get vaccinated. Their job, after all, is to be around those who are most likely to be bringing the virus in.

Of all people, you'd think they'd want to be vaccinated.

Maybe they could be required to wear more protective face and mask shields and abide by more extensive health practices.

I heard that in the US--not sure how accurate this is--that if the FDA approves any of the vaccines on more than an emergency basis, employers would be able to require the shots.

Even then, there are a number of opt-outs, though.

That’s a good question! I didn’t get a choice, you got what they specified when you signed up. I decided I had waited long enough and either Pfizer or Moderna was fine with me.
That has been the only ones offered around here.
If you have any underlying health issues, maybe you could contact your doctor for help deciding which is right for you?

Thanks for the answer. It is at my doctor's office that I will be getting the shot. I just had surgery (3/26/21) on my left carotid artery - it was blocked 80% & have been taking 75mg of aspirin a day. Had surgery on my right carotid artery at the end of January which was 90% blocked. I feel good!
So the aspirin should help in no blood clots, eh?

I do wonder, though, whether people who have risk of clots from HRT, BC pills, smoking, genetics or COVID might also be the group with a higher risk from the vaccine.

I have pin-prick rash on my foot today (and have had BC-related blood clots that almost killed me). I'm 3 weeks out from my second shot and now they're saying clots can still occur.

Gonna go take an aspirin. No idea what to do and am pretty tired worrying about it, myself.

How is your rash today? I used to get these all the time when drinking alcohol or sun exposure, almost every time. I finally decided it must be an allergic reaction and stopped. Maybe an allergic reaction not the vaccine? I hope you are better! :)

OMG..!

So glad you're doing well!

You might be our only Latvia poster.....take care.....:)

Yes absolutely aspirin thins the blood, thus helps with blood clot issues.
There are different sized doses of aspirin and also prescription blood thinners so please consult your heart specialist on exactly what - and how much - you should take to thin your blood.

Go on...call your Doctor's office... "spit-spot" .....;) (means hurry according to Mary Poppins)

COVID cases and hospitalization are rising in NH as its mask mandate expires

On a more positive note NH is opening up and giving their vaccines to anyone from anywhere that wants one starting Monday. Hopefully that’ll take a little bit of demand off of Massachusetts supply . (If people in our northern border towns decide to go there instead )
As we see reports on the numbers rising, I think we do need to watch if the hospitalization numbers rise significantly. We might have to accept cases rising (with people recovering at home and hopefully not spreading it).

It's the rate of people being so sick they have to be hospitalized that should be the concern, imo, and that's the number the vaccinations should curb.

can you telahealth a picture of the pin pricks to your Dr? that is sort of what telehealth is about and maybe they will either say "it's nothing" or "come in" or "go to a hospital to get checked out."

Thank you for that suggestion - it did cross my mind last night, but was too lazy to photograph my foot (I had them on my hand about 4 days before). They are gone this morning - but I do wonder what's going on. I took aspirin last night and will continue to do so. It's interesting that the dots were on extremities (hand and foot) though.

Thank you for taking an interest, too, I didn't want to mention it to DH who would freak out.

(Actually I can still see a couple so will take a picture here in a few minutes).

Thank you for your concern! That's an interesting point - I've been outdoors barefoot quite a bit in the last week (after months mostly indoors) and I did drink alcohol as well. Plus, I stopped taking my usual daytime antihistamine. Those are really good hypotheses. As a small child, I used to get a rash that one doctor thought might be sun related. Hmmm. I don't remember what it looked like - it wasn't a sunburn and I tan easily, so maybe there is some kind of reaction (not tan right now at all!)

That is what my doctor (who did my surgery) recommended - the 75mg aspirin. Yes, call my doctor on Monday - and will probably get my shot the next day - that's how it worked for my bro.

Yes, I do believe I AM the only Latvian poster here! And taking care of myself! Thanks! ;)

Like pinpricks or more like a rash?
Didn’t think about sun exposure.
I was wondering if bleeding under the skin.
If you press on one, does it turn pale?
Hope you are doing okay otherwise.

Thanks for clarifying that the 75 mg is your Doctor's orders..... Don't make me take a plane to Europe to make sure you comply... LOL .. !

I have Factor V Leiden, a blood clotting disorder. It is genetic. My daughter as 21 when diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolisms while on a birth control patch. Every pregnancy resulted in blood clots before her 7 wks. She was prescribed daily lovenox injections throughout the pregnancy. She’s an NICU NP and contracted COVID-19 that swept through her department. Thankfully, she did not develop blood clots. When she was cleared to return to work 2 wks later, she scheduled and received the the vaccines. I guess that healthcare workers didn’t have to wait the 90 days to get vaccinated.

Great to meet you! DH is from not too far away from Latvia. We are reading Norman Davies' Europe and learning all about your part of the world (it is fascinating - we're up to about the year 1200, ha). Do. you know the work of Marija Gimbutas? She's Lithuanian, but her work as an archaeologist is across the broader region. There's a great documentary on her work (Signs Out of Time) which completely changed my views on the prehistory of Europe.

I'll have to have my bro download this documentary - thanks! So your DH is a Lithuanian? :)
And yes Latvia's history goes way back. 1st country to have a flag - 1st Christmas tree in Riga! :D And the architecture here is amazing! - sorry OT....

Didn’t think about sun exposure.

It's more like pin pricks. No raised anything. When I press on it, the area around it turns pale, it does not.

I'm doing great otherwise. I do wonder about longer term side effects of my vaccine - my DH has had a mild to moderate headache nearly every day since his second dose, which was 2.5 weeks ago now, and otherwise feels great.

These pinprick type spots were on the top of my right foot and the top of my right hand - I sleep on my right side, usually, so it did occur to me that circulation + vaccine might be the issue.

(DH just took a picture, I can see that there are more of them just under the skin. If they are clots, they are in the capillaries, so I'm likely to continue to ignore it. However, I think it's important that those of you who have had the vaccine report on any odd symptoms (to us and to your doctor).

I am glad I got the first set of shots when my immune system is still so active (I took Vitamin D, Zinc regularly even before the pandemic, because research showed that those things ward off the flu as well as flu shots do - but I got a flu shot this year, to prime my immune system). Then I added NAC a couple of days before the vaccine and only just stopped taking it. DH says NAC is the only thing that helps with his headaches, so surely his headaches are an immune response?

Top 9 Benefits of NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

On a purely psychological note, my mood is so much better and I'm sleeping better after the vaccine. We had our granddaughter over for an entire day - and it was weird, almost as if we all had to get acquainted again. She was subdued, although did a lot of running around in the backyard (she doesn't have a yard) and sat and hugged her favorite dog while they both watched 101 Dalmations (dog howls along and barks to send messages to the dogs on screen - she finds this hilarious, so do we).

That's when I realized that I've been mildly to moderately depressed for an entire year. Memories from more than a year ago, of things left unsaid and undone at work, flooded back. It's so weird - even driving around time seems weird. We used curbside pick-up instead of house delivery for the first time - great experience. But I feel less young, less adaptable. Am slowly getting more...interested in life again?

I suspect many of us are going through similar. And those of us still shielding (we're still avoiding many circumstances, various reasons) are still trapped in some way by this disease. When my county's new case rate gets a little lower, I'll feel much better.
