Hooray, first day of zero recorded deaths in the UK since it all began!

Covid: Zero daily deaths announced in UK for first time

Can’t get too giddy since the Indian variant is on the increase and it’s a bank holiday weekend so reports may be slightly skewed, BUT it feels good, for now!

'More infectious' Indian Covid variant is growing rapidly in the US and now makes up 7% of all cases | Daily Mail Online

More infectious Indian Covid variant growing rapidly- seen in the US as well

I am really nervous about all these millions of people living life like the Virus is history: Airports, sporting events, weddings, parties- all going on like we are normal now. I hate to say this, but I am expecting another surge- I sure hope I am wrong but I don't think there are enough people vaccinated for herd immunity. We will know within two weeks.

I would feel a lot safer at an airport and on a plane due to the federal mask mandate (which is set to expire on September 13th.)

The flight attendants and pilots make a point to emphasize they take mask wearing serious (the airlines do too - its very clear from booking to check in about the mask requirement).

TSA extends face mask requirement at airports and throughout the transportation network | Transportation Security Administration

Events such as indoor maskless weddings with no social distancing and other parties- I definitely would feel less safe. I’ve declined several of those gatherings since last March. :(
But I have immune compromised family members so I tend to be cautious.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will use Greek letters to refer to coronavirus variants rather than the names of countries after professors raised concerns that nations could be “stigmatised” for detecting new strains.

From now on, the WHO will label the variants first discovered in Kent, South Africa, Brazil and India as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta respectively.

Seems those of us who are vaccinated in Australia might be able to start travelling sometime this year.
Not sure how many of us want to venture outside our country yet (other than perhaps going to NZ) ... but its a start.

Australians who have been vaccinated against Covid would be able to leave the country and return with less strict quarantine requirements under a plan that could be trialled within six weeks.
With Australia struggling to vaccinate its population by the end of 2021, there is pressure on the federal government to provide incentives to get the jab and to ease the travel ban that has separated families.

I wonder how the Greeks feel about us borrowing their alphabet to de-stigmatise all the other countries o_O:D

I suppose they could have just called it A,B,C,D,E, but the Greek words for their letters are more interesting.

A Brazilian town has seen a 95% drop in Covid-19 deaths after almost all adults were vaccinated as part of an experiment, researchers say.

Serrana, with 45,000 inhabitants, saw cases plunge after a mass vaccination with the Chinese-developed CoronaVac.

The findings suggest the pandemic can be controlled after 75% of people are fully dosed.

When 95% of adults were fully vaccinated, they said the results showed that:
  • Deaths fell by 95%
  • Hospitalisations fell by 86%
  • Symptomatic cases fell by 80%

Just think if we could get the 20% that won't get vaccines in the US to cooperate and understand what a monumentally wonderful thing the vaccine is, we could control this virus and truly get back to normal life without worrying about the virus!!!

The NIH said it started a trial looking at what happens when an adult who is fully vaccinated with one type of Covid vaccine, like Pfizer’s, is boosted with a different shot about three to four months later.

The trial will include about 150 adults who have been fully vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson, Moderna or Pfizer Covid vaccines, according to the agency.

" ..... we need to prepare for the possibility of needing booster shots to counter waning immunity and to keep pace with an evolving virus”
“The results of this trial are intended to inform public health policy decisions on the potential use of mixed vaccine schedules should booster doses be indicated”

Looking forward to the results of this trial---I think mix and match would be a good thing

Covid Victoria: State extends lockdown to curb outbreak

This says only 2% of Australians are vaccinated so far, does that sound right @SouthAussie ?

Yep. Sounds about right. :(

xx1.JPG

It is really painful, but we try not to get too worked up about it. We just can't get the vaccines for our under 50s (those who are not front line workers). We only receive small batches of our Pfizer order, and they go right to front line workers.

Our over 50s rollout (AstraZeneca) is starting to step up a bit now, but there is no way we will all be vaccinated before 2022 - and likely not until mid 2022. Unless we suddenly receive an avalanche of vaccines.

We are just going to have to keep on doing what we have been doing. At least our mass testing, contact tracing, and snap lockdowns are keeping things under control when we have an outbreak (with the closed borders/quarantining as our primary defence, of course).

There is no point whinging about it. We have done really well, and been very lucky, and can go wherever we want to holiday within Australia (and NZ), and life has been very normal for us - most of the time.
It is just going to end up being a 2-2½ year international border closure, I think.

A week and a half ago, the fast-rising percentage of Canadians with at least one dose of vaccine passed that of the United States.

This week, Canada will move ahead of Britain, the Group of 20 leader. Next week, the share of Canadians with at least one shot is likely to pass Israel – the developed world’s vaccination champion.

As of Tuesday, more than 66 per cent of eligible Canadians – those 12 years of age and older – had received at least one shot. Despite a vaccine supply both smaller and arriving later than many peer countries, Canada has surged ahead, owing to the eagerness of Canadians.

Globe editorial: Make COVID-19 history. Boost Canada’s vaccination rate to 90 per cent
