We are in Vermont staying with our son and fam, came up last week for grandson's graduation from HS (yay!). Here is the latest news from the state re covid:

Vermont has reached its 80% COVID vaccination goal. Gov. Phil Scott made the announcement Monday morning and said, as promised, he is dropping all existing COVID restrictions.

The pandemic milestone means masking, social distancing, distance between tables, Plexiglass barriers and other health measures are now recommended, not required.

However, masking will remain in a number of settings like schools, hospitals, prisons and public transportation, to name a few.

ETA: Question if ANYONE here knows. When they do the annual change of flu variants each and every year for flu shots.... how to they do those trials. How many do they have to have get such... or since they are mostly working on past years, it's easier.

The flu viruses are selected through constant studies and research of new variants at:

London, United Kingdom (The Francis Crick Institute)

Tokyo, Japan (National Institute for Infectious Diseases)

The updated flu vaccines do go to clinical trial for 6 months on volunteers. (Which I saw in another link which I cannot now find again). Although it is not mentioned how many volunteers are used.

For months now, noted American cardiologist and researcher Eric Topol has been keenly following the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines around the world. And he can't say enough good things about his northern neighbour's fast and sudden rise to the top.

His frequent praise for Canada can be found on Twitter, including a recent tweet lauding the country for "pulling away, setting a new pace and ceiling for 1st dose vaccinations of major countries."

It's a rise to the top that he says is mostly due to "the culture" of Canada.

In an interview with CBC News, Topol said Canadians are more science-based, less vaccine-hesitant and certainly less likely to be "anti-vaxx" than those in his own country.

Yet, I'm worried. However, I am a bit of the worrying type.
California has a pretty good rate of vaccinated people according to our government
Leaders.
I guess, I am just shell shocked over these months of "open-close" directives that have thrown us into chaos so many times.
I would love to throw my masks in the air and say "this war is over"!

The problem is these unvaccinated people will contract the virus and spread it
overwhelming our medical system and thereby affecting all of us, and no
doubt some vaccinated people will also contract the virus-

I am cautiously optimistic that we have enough people partially or fully vaccinated or that have already had covid and likely have at least some degree of immunity that we shouldn’t see the horrifying numbers that overwhelm our hospitals like we saw last spring, summer, and fall. The numbers here literally nose-dived once vaccines really got off the ground. I could be wrong, but I pray I’m not.

It's a v cruel rollercoaster ride if you ask me.

Keep your eyes to what is happening here in the UK. We thought we were returning to some kind of normal this week but no, the Delta variant is creating a surge and our lifting of restrictions is pushed back a month.

Make hay while the sun is shining but stay as safe as you can while doing so. Thats what I think, anyway.

Could this finally be over? Here is California, we've been told that the pandemic is over.
Everything re-opens tomorrow.
I own a restaurant, so, obviously, I am thrilled.
Yet, I'm worried. However, I am a bit of the worrying type.
California has a pretty good rate of vaccinated people according to our government
Leaders.
I guess, I am just shell shocked over these months of "open-close" directives that have thrown us into chaos so many times.
I would love to throw my masks in the air and say "this war is over"!

I don't believe it is fully 'over' yet....but it has gotten a whole lot better.

Yesterday we actually went to a nice Restaurant in West Hollywood, and has drinks and dinner. It was lovely. I feel safer, as we are both fully vaccinated and so are our whole family, except grandchildren.

My 90 year old Mom has come through this unscathed. And that was my biggest fear. She is doing great, even after being in lockdown for over a year, and she seems upbeat. We are flying to see her next week.

Her assisted living center has ZERO residents coming down with the virus and there are over 200 in the complex.

The town her restaurant is in has about a 70% vaccination rate right now. People who are fully vaccinated are still being successfully protected from the Delta variant , according to current stats.

So I think things will be OK.

It seems like there is always a new variant, more transmissible than the last- Is this what we have to look forward to given that there is a segment of the population that will not get vaccinated?

I think this might be the beginning of the end of the pandemic, as well. For vaccinated people.

We just really need to get the whole world vaccinated (or at least 70%-80% of each country), because while we are feeling comforted the pandemic is raging on in less fortunate countries. And thousands are still dying every day.

We need a true humanitarian effort and a whole bunch of caring about others.

And we need to watch out for our little children, who are unprotected at the moment ... and will be for quite a while.

In the US we will never get 70-80% of people vaccinated and this presents a serious problem. Just think of those 180 hospital employees who sued their hospital because the hospital insists they get vaccinated and they won't comply- they will be fired. Just imagine the mind set of a hospital employee who is so clueless as to not understand what a risk they, an unvaccinated person, presents to hospital patients!!! It is outrageous.
