Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #95

We here at WS KNEW it was aerosolized for over a da*n year!
.
IMO it's just like when a bunch of people on a thread are convinced they know who is the culprit of a crime: it's all very well to have a gut feeling, but when it comes to putting people in jail for a long time, you need actual hard evidence, which people on WS don't have.

IMO science is not just one study from one research paper, it is many studies built up over time to test the hypothesis in different circumstances, by different researchers, until a consensus is reached amongst the scientists, just like an actual guilty verdict in an actual trial is made by a consensus of jury members, not by individual WS posters.

It's not just whether Covid could be spread by aerosol, but whether it actually is spread by aerosols in any significant numbers. From my reading, it doesn't appear that scientists have resolved that debate yet, in spite of the CDC updating their information. Other countries are contemplating the issue as well:

I think it was probably this one from a South Korean restaurant that showed the airflow and who then got Covid, the times they were there, etc.

No kidding. I seem to remember a graphic depicting a restaurant and how the HVAC system blew it all over the room. Maybe from China? Anyways I don’t have a link so it’s just a memory and an opinion of mine at this point. Moo

That was from Guangdong. Will find report.

“GUANGZHOU, Guangdong Province — Researchers in China believe air conditioning inside a restaurant in Guangzhou, China, may have played a part in spreading COVID-19 from one person, who wasn't feeling sick, to nine others.”

There was also this:

Coronavirus can remain in air up to 3 hours, on surfaces for days, study finds
March 18, 2020

“Researchers found that the new coronavirus remained "viable in aerosols" — infectious in air — for three hours, the duration of the experiment.”

*There is another report I’m looking for, one that I’ve gone by all year, also wrt the three hour thing.

Eta3: Here’s another one from WHO (still not the one I’m looking for) :

“Experimental studies have generated aerosols of infectious samples using high-powered jet nebulizers under controlled laboratory conditions. These studies found SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA in air samples within aerosols for up to 3 hours in one study (21) and 16 hours in another, which also found viable replication-competent virus.(22) These findings were from experimentally induced aerosols that do not reflect normal human cough conditions.”

Eta4: This maaaaay be the one I’m looking for, not sure yet:

Aerosol and Surface Stability of SARS-CoV-2 as Compared with SARS-CoV-1
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmc2004973

“SARS-CoV-2 remained viable in aerosols throughout the duration of our experiment (3 hours), with a reduction in infectious titer from 103.5to 102.7 TCID50 per liter of air. This reduction was similar to that observed with SARS-CoV-1, from 104.3 to 103.5TCID50 per milliliter (Figure 1A)”

Nope that’s not the one I’m looking for either lol.

Eta5: Speaking of Guangdong, as I posted early last year, it was my initial theory that this is where the source is/where the virus originated. Making a note to check if the WHO team references Guangdong at all in that latest report.

Yes. I'm sickened daily by the fact that in my area health departments and other entities are begging folks through social media to come in on a walk-in basis so vaccines don't spoil. Send them to other countries in need, already!
Oh yes, send us your spares please! I'm realistically still a couple of months away from being eligible for my first vaccine appointment. I've honestly started to dream about being vaccinated... Most Irish people would give their right arm to get a vaccination! No hesitancy here. It's hard to comprehend people turning them down.

India supplied vaccines to other countries, and now they need them.

The oxygen shortages are just horrific to think about. My heart really goes out to all these people and countries.

ETA: So, when the latest WHO report came out on the source studies, I was swamped with work and didn’t have a chance to read it. Then I got distracted and forgot about it. So, I’m reading it now (only on page 7/120), and so far am finding it very, very interesting:

I bet if we sent even just one full week of our own available vaccs to India it could make an impact. The US and anyone else who currently has vaccine spoilage going on should pause here for a week and divert vaccines there. Wish I had Biden's ear. I would nag and nag.

Your suggestion makes so much sense- too much sense, so of course it won't happen!

Let's make a deal. We'll send Ireland doses of vaccine and, in exchange, Ireland sends us a big dose of common sense we can spread around, at least enough for herd immunity to protect against misinformation.

Done! We'll throw in a few barrels of whiskey as well to sweeten the deal

If anyone doesn't have the time to read the full report, here is a news release about it with some links:
WHO calls for further studies, data on origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus, reiterates that all hypotheses remain open

30 March 2021

The report of the international team on their Wuhan field visit, from 14 January -10 February 2021, was published today as WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for further studies.

The report stems from a Member State resolution adopted by consensus at the World Health Assembly in May 2020 and calling on WHO “to identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population, including the possible role of intermediate hosts, including through efforts such as scientific and collaborative field missions.”

In remarks to Member States today, Dr Tedros, who received the full report on the weekend, thanked the team for their tireless work. He said it advances our understanding in important ways, while raising questions that will need to be addressed by further studies, as noted in the report. “As far as WHO is concerned, all hypotheses remain on the table. This report is a very important beginning, but it is not the end. We have not yet found the source of the virus, and we must continue to follow the science and leave no stone unturned as we do,” said Dr Tedros. “Finding the origin of a virus takes time and we owe it to the world to find the source so we can collectively take steps to reduce the risk of this happening again. No single research trip can provide all the answers.”

The report is available on this webpage:

Virus origin / Origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus

Below is the full text of the Director-General’s remarks that can be found here:

WHO Director-General's remarks at the Member State Briefing on the report of the international team studying the origins of SARS-CoV-2

Background information
From the very beginning of the pandemic WHO has stressed the need to understand the origin of the virus in order to better understand the emergence of new pathogens and possible exposures.

Only a few weeks into the outbreak, the IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts recommended that WHO and China pursue efforts to identify the animal source of the virus.

Throughout 2020, WHO continued to discuss with China and other Member States the need to study and share information around the virus origins.

The World Health Assembly resolution of May 2020, which was adopted by all Member States, cited a need “to identify the zoonotic source” ....

[Snip]

In July 2020 WHO sent a small team to China to plan a joint study comprising Chinese and independent international scientists.

It was agreed that WHO would select the international scientists. The Terms of Reference for the Virus Origins Study were completed by fall 2020.

[Snip]

The team of scientists came from around the world: Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, Qatar, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Viet Nam.

The joint international team comprised 17 Chinese and 17 international experts from 10 other countries as well as the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE); and WHO.
  • Find the list of the members of the international team here.
From the outset, this study was designed as one step on the path of understanding the origins of COVID-19 reflecting the specific scope and mandate as outlined by Member States in the World Health Assembly resolution and negotiated Terms of Reference.

I'm watching an on-demand from this week of the TV show 48 hours. It's the first case that I've seen somebody was trying to do a cover up with the covid pandemic as to a murder.

Well, Dr. Osterholm reads all his emails (or so he says), and considering he was an advisor to Biden, maybe you can email him. :)

Speaking of Dr. O, on his latest podcast, he assigned everyone a homework assignment, to email him at CIDRAP letting him know what he can do better on his podcast. I have no feedback for improvement. :)

What happened? Did someone deliberately murder a person by giving them covid? A friend of mine got covid and then visited her 93 yr old father. This obit was posted this week. It's hard for me not to think that she murdered him.

I heard that on the news and thought i was hearing things---why is that?
are these unclaimed bodies??

some of them but it also says this: 'while family members sort out plans for their final resting places.'

I think so. Hart Island is where they bury indigents and unclaimed bodies. I just wonder why they're keeping them in cold storage so long?
