How Long Do Vaccine Protections Last? Science Can’t Say for Sure (msn.com)

Protection from coronavirus vaccines is expected to wane, but no one knows when. It could be as soon as this fall for the first wave of people vaccinated last winter, and many predict that Covid boosters will soon join annual flu shots.

Ideally, anyone worried about fading vaccine protection could get tested for Covid-fighting antibodies, the primary defense against the virus. But as cancer patients and others with impaired immune systems are learning, it’s not that simple.

Comment: MOO- We will need a mix of vaccines AND NPI/travel restrictions to get out of this pandemic-but the political will to go in that direction is not there-making this pandemic only worse! The present direction will bring resistant Covid-19 viruses-the virus wins...stupidity will kill us...My impression is the US/UK/EU goal is to keep the RO just under 1...even if that means the pandemic will go on worldwide for many years..."economy first=economy only"...that strategy remains to be a disaster! I am NOT an expert-I think most experts do not want to go for long term scenarios-other then "endemic".

And this is why our government (UK) seems reluctant to confirm the magical June 21st date which should have been the end of all our restrictions. It’s all gone to plan up until now, so we should know what’s what in a couple of weeks.

Fortunately, as it stands today, while cases are rising, hospitalisations and deaths are still falling. It remains to be seen whether that means the vaccine is doing its job against the Indian and other recent variants.

Are people getting infected but having mild cases they can manage at home?

Or are we about to have another surge in hospital admissions and deaths?

God I sincerely hope not...

Apparently, the CDC has been urging schools to keep up their mask use - as well as physical distancing.

U.S. schools should maintain mask requirements at least through the end of the academic year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its latest guidance, even after saying fully vaccinated adults can safely shed face coverings in most settings.
“Universal and correct use of masks should be required” at K-12 schools providing in-person instruction, the CDC said in a statement Saturday.
“Physical distancing should be maximized to the greatest extent possible.” That includes creating distance between children on school buses when possible and ensuring that “teachers and staff use proper handwashing and respiratory etiquette,” according to the agency.

Things are starting to heat up:

"There’s a lot of cloudiness around the origins of COVID-19 still, so I wanted to ask, are you still confident that it developed naturally?" PolitiFact’s Katie Sanders asked the nation’s top infectious disease expert in an event, United Facts of America: A Festival of Fact-Checking event.

"No actually," Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said, around 12 minutes into footage of the event, which was held earlier this month but overlooked by most media outlets. "I am not convinced about that, I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened."

Covid-19: Bengaluru hospitals out of beds to treat black fungus cases | Bengaluru News - Times of India
Sunitha Rao May 23, 2021

After the scarcity of the drug Liposomal amphotericin B, a shortage of hospital beds is affecting patients with mucormycosis, a serious fungal infection. Major hospitals in the city, which had reserved beds for such cases, say their wards are full now. Many patients turning up at OPDs are being sent back without treatment.

Patients with mucormycosis, dubbed black fungus, require nearly two weeks of hospital care.

The aggressive infection develops in the nasal tract, travels towards the eye, and can be fatal if it spreads to the brain. It is being detected in several people who recovered from Covid-19. Patients who received high doses of steroids or were on oxygen support during the Covid treatment are thought to be particularly vulnerable.

If anyone doesn't have the time to read the full report, here is a news release about it with some links:
WHO calls for further studies, data on origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus, reiterates that all hypotheses remain open

30 March 2021

The report of the international team on their Wuhan field visit, from 14 January -10 February 2021, was published today as WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for further studies.

The report stems from a Member State resolution adopted by consensus at the World Health Assembly in May 2020 and calling on WHO “to identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population, including the possible role of intermediate hosts, including through efforts such as scientific and collaborative field missions.”

In remarks to Member States today, Dr Tedros, who received the full report on the weekend, thanked the team for their tireless work. He said it advances our understanding in important ways, while raising questions that will need to be addressed by further studies, as noted in the report. “As far as WHO is concerned, all hypotheses remain on the table. This report is a very important beginning, but it is not the end. We have not yet found the source of the virus, and we must continue to follow the science and leave no stone unturned as we do,” said Dr Tedros. “Finding the origin of a virus takes time and we owe it to the world to find the source so we can collectively take steps to reduce the risk of this happening again. No single research trip can provide all the answers.”

The report is available on this webpage:

Virus origin / Origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus

Below is the full text of the Director-General’s remarks that can be found here:

WHO Director-General's remarks at the Member State Briefing on the report of the international team studying the origins of SARS-CoV-2

Background information
From the very beginning of the pandemic WHO has stressed the need to understand the origin of the virus in order to better understand the emergence of new pathogens and possible exposures.

Only a few weeks into the outbreak, the IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts recommended that WHO and China pursue efforts to identify the animal source of the virus.

Throughout 2020, WHO continued to discuss with China and other Member States the need to study and share information around the virus origins.

The World Health Assembly resolution of May 2020, which was adopted by all Member States, cited a need “to identify the zoonotic source” ....

[Snip]

In July 2020 WHO sent a small team to China to plan a joint study comprising Chinese and independent international scientists.

It was agreed that WHO would select the international scientists. The Terms of Reference for the Virus Origins Study were completed by fall 2020.

[Snip]

The team of scientists came from around the world: Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, Qatar, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Viet Nam.

The joint international team comprised 17 Chinese and 17 international experts from 10 other countries as well as the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE); and WHO.
  • Find the list of the members of the international team here.
From the outset, this study was designed as one step on the path of understanding the origins of COVID-19 reflecting the specific scope and mandate as outlined by Member States in the World Health Assembly resolution and negotiated Terms of Reference.

''WASHINGTON — Three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) sought hospital care in November 2019, months before China disclosed the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report.

The newspaper said the previously undisclosed report – which provides fresh details on the number of researchers affected, the timing of their illnesses, and their hospital visits – may add weight to calls for a broader investigation into whether the COVID-19 virus could have escaped from the laboratory.''

A little update from Aussieland.

Little cluster in a north Melbourne suburb (9 related cases, so far). All Melburnians required to wear masks until next Tuesday.
Cluster developed from quarantine source ... after the traveller had done his required 14 days in quarantine, and tested negative multiple times.

Airlines are crying and wanting international borders to "safely" open. The govt says "Nope". The people primarily don't care.

Vaccine rollout going immensely slow. About 5% of the population vaccinated.
Pfizer says it will have our whole order to us by the end of the year, in the meantime we go on receiving small batches from them.
Moderna (and others) have been invited to tender on mRNA making facility here, looking toward the future requirements of mRNA booster shots and negating our dependancy on others in this regard.
