Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #95

Wow, those statistics really make the case that the pandemic continues full tilt in unvaccinated folks. I hope that they will finally realize that they need to be vaccinated before they end up in a hospital or dead.

I do hope the unvaccinated ones will change their minds before it’s too late. But there are entirely too many stubborn Oregonians who are convinced vaccines are unsafe and that it’s all a government plot to control them. 'This is one of those things that happens in life:' Jon Rahm tests positive for COVID-19, withdraws from Memorial with six-shot lead

Golfer Jon Rahm, who had a 6 shot lead in a PGA tournament, had to drop out due to a positive Covid test. I must assume he is not vaccinated- though they don't say - the article does say if a golfer is fully vaccinated they would not require testing.

Leading by 6 strokes after 3 rounds, Jon Rahm withdraws from the Memorial after testing positive for COVID-19

“Jon Rahm walked off the 18th green after tying the 54-hole record and building a six-shot lead, leaving him on the cusp of joining Tiger Woods as the only repeat winners of the Memorial.

Moments later, he doubled over behind the green and said in anguish, “Not again!”

So he was automatically forced to give up this incredible achievement just because he had a positive covid test? No wonder people are suicidal :-|

Welcome to Websleuths @ringbearer. :)

The tournament rules apply to everyone regardless of ranking or whether they are playing at the top of bottom. It’s really unfortunate that he tested positive, but the rule is in place to keep others safe from this deadly virus. It sounds like Rahm had a mature reaction and wasn’t suicidal.

“I’m very disappointed in having to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament,” Rahm posted on Twitter. “This is one of those things that happens in life, one of those moments where how we respond to a setback defines us as people. I’m very thankful that my family and I are all OK. I will take all of the necessary precautions to be safe and healthy, and I look forward to returning to the golf course as soon as possible.”

Well, I guess he should have got himself vaccinated in plenty of time then. If this tournament meant so much to him.

It is obvious he is either unvaccinated, or vaccinated less than 14 days ago. I would guess he is unvaccinated as he declines to tell people his vaccination status.

I think that this is how life is going to go now. There are things - events, international travel, in person University education - that are going to be denied to the unvaccinated.
He is probably lucky he could play at all. He had to test daily as he was a close contact of a covid positive person.
We have posted two articles now that show the verdict is in ... it is primarily the unvaccinated who are catching covid.

It is highly likely that if he'd caught measles or some other contagious disease, he would have had to withdraw then as well.

“If someone had been fully vaccinated, and fully vaccinated under our protocol is, and it’s defined by the CDC, is 14 days past the full cycle of a vaccination. They do not have to test as a result of being a close contact.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will urge leaders of other wealthy countries to commit to vaccinating the world against Covid-19 by the end of next year.

He will lay out a target for global vaccination at a summit of the G7 group of advanced economies on Friday.

As well as dose-sharing, the UK will encourage more discussion about how manufacturing can be stepped up in the coming months.

The root cause of pandemics – the destruction of nature – is being ignored, scientists have warned.

The razing of forests and hunting of wildlife is increasingly bringing animals and the microbes they harbour into contact with people and livestock. About 70% of new infectious diseases have come from animals, including Covid-19, Sars, bird flu, Ebola and HIV.

However, preventing this root cause of spillover is scarcely mentioned by leaders and authorities, said the scientists behind a new independent taskforce, which will report to the coalition on Preventing Pandemics at the Source.

“Covid-19 was a warning shot from the whole of nature to our species,” said Aaron Bernstein, a doctor at Harvard’s Center for Climate, Health and the Global Environment who is leading the taskforce. “But so far world leaders are far from acting. You hear from [them] about the actions to supposedly prevent pandemics, but the idea of preventing their root causes is scarcely even mentioned, let alone discussed.

I suppose it’s possible that Rahm may not have had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated in time and took his chances. I guess we’ll ever know why he wasn’t vaccinated unless he talks about it. But Levinson (the senior Vice President of tour administration) made an interesting point about the logistics of players being fully vaccinated:

While the Tour has not required players to get vaccinated, Levinson revealed that the “fully vaccinated population is north of 50 percent.”

Levinson was asked if he was happy with that number.

“We are,” Levinson said. “You know, of course we would like to see the number higher, but full vaccination is two full weeks past the completion of a cycle. So let’s look at the Moderna vaccine, for example. That’s a six-week process. And you’re looking at a population of a lot of young people who may not have even necessarily been eligible in their hometowns until mid-April. So we’re really starting to see that percentage of people uploading their full vaccination record, that’s really starting to increase significantly over the last two weeks and I expect it to continue.”

I am amazed he was able to play at all. Being a close contact of a covid positive person.

If he lived here or in NZ, he would have been in self isolation for 14 days. And would have had to test negative before leaving self isolation.
Too much risk that he might have caught covid (which he did) then spread it even further (which is yet to be determined).

Yes, proof of vaccination will be the price of admission to many opportunities, even grandparents seeing their grandkids in some families. This is reasonable and fair. It’s just life in a pandemic that hasn’t yet run its course and may be with us for a long time…especially if people refuse to be vaccinated. Apparently these folks want it to magically disappear, so they don’t have to sacrifice anything to help it happen. But magical thinking is what children do, not responsible adults.

Yes, without being vaccinated (for whatever reason) you’d think that the close contact with a Covid positive person would have been the end of it, and it should have been. It never ceases to amaze me that someone who knows they’ve been exposed is willing to put others at risk and is allowed to do so. I’m actually surprised there was any contact tracing going on.

Barring a limit on the number of children families can have, I'm not sure we're going to be able to slow population growth, which means we're going to continue to encroach on nature and forested lands.

I don't know the degree to which encroachment on nature increases our risk of pandemics, but it's harmful to a number of things.

I've wondered why we don't see more tree planting initiatives at national, federal, and local levels. Everyone wants that wide expanse of lush green lawn, but if property tax credits were given for each healthy tree growing in a yard, I think we'd see a lot more trees--and nothing is better at reducing CO than trees.

From what I've read, the tournament director ordered a second test on the original sample. I'm just guessing that Rom was told the first test was positive and that a second test was being run.

He must have known something, though, because it was reported that a fan asked him to sign something, and he said he couldn't because he was in contact tracing.

Poor guy, but it apparently didn't come as a surprise.

Eating Out

My sister and I took our elderly mother out to eat yesterday. We used to do this every other weekend until Covid interfered.

Yesterday, was wonderful! We went to Elderslie Farm, a little farm in the middle of nowhere where patrons can eat outdoors. We are all vaccinated, of course.

The servers all wore masks and we had a very friendly rooster wander over by our table to say hello.

It's a fun little place and it has a creamery where we got a scoop of lemon ice cream and ate it on the patio as well before we left.

I spoke with the young lady who served up the ice cream and asked how long they would be required to wear masks--she didn't know but she told me she was fully vaccinated, too. She was probably 16 or 17. She said she and her parents had been vaccinated last fall--they volunteered as part of the vaccine trial.

I told her "Thank you." For both the ice cream and for volunteering for the trial.

Jon Rahm withdraws from Memorial due to Covid: Questions and answers

“Rahm played with Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler on Saturday, and Cantlay said he has not been vaccinated, while Scheffler declined to answer.

Said Cantlay: “I’ve already had Covid, so, yeah, I got to imagine I have antibodies, so I don’t feel too concerned, but obviously it is somewhat of a concern, but I got to imagine that I had it earlier this year, so I’m feeling pretty OK about it.”

Said Scheffler: “Yeah, we played golf outside in the sunlight and everything, I don’t feel very concerned. I had Covid. I’m not going to say whether or not I got vaccinated. I had Covid in the fall and, I mean, I still feel great. I mean, I — yeah, no.”
———

We played outside in the sunlight - what kind of answer is that?

If your career is important to you wouldn’t you do everything you could to be healthy and not get Covid for the second time?

Perhaps he had been in the sun too long.
