The delta and delta plus variants: Everything you need to know (nbcnews.com)

The coronavirus variant is on track to become the dominant version of the virus in the U.S. Here's what you need to know about it and the delta plus variant.

A more contagious variant of the coronavirus, known as delta, is spreading in the United States and around the world, causing a surge of cases in some countries and prompting several nations to introduce new lockdowns.

The delta variant, which was first identified in India, now accounts for 25 percent of new Covid-19 cases in the U.S., and is on track to become the dominant version of the virus circulating in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a news briefing last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, called the delta variant the “greatest threat” to eliminating Covid-19 in the U.S. ...

We are seeing an upswing in number of COVID patients in the clinics where I have been working. Some younger patients have become very sick, one is only a teen.

Five of our patients this week have tested positive for COVID after being fully vaccinated. Two of them have severe symptoms.

I called the clinic where I got the J&J shot and asked if I should get a Moderna as a booster. They said they couldn't recommend that nor give me the shot until there's more guidance. How frustrating!

I could go somewhere else and get a shot and no one there would know I had a J&J previously, but if people start doing that, it will skew the vaccine count.

I really wish we were getting better guidance with Delta surging out there.

J&J Covid-19 vaccine lasts at least 8 months, protects against Delta variant, studies find

"Current data for the eight months studied so far show that the single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine generates a strong neutralizing antibody response that does not wane; rather, we observe an improvement over time," Dr. Mathai Mammen, head of research and development at J&J's Janssen vaccine arm, said in a statement.

For our older members who've been vaccinated, please take extra care. I really don't like this.

"A MailOnline headline on 13 June read: “Study shows 29% of the 42 people who have died after catching the new strain had BOTH vaccinations.” In Public Health England’s technical briefing on 25 June, that figure had risen to 43% (50 of 117), with the majority (60%) having received at least one dose."

...................................

"But the risk of dying from Covid-19 is extraordinarily dependent on age: it halves for each six to seven year age gap. This means that someone aged 80 who is fully vaccinated essentially takes on the risk of an unvaccinated person of around 50 – much lower, but still not nothing, and so we can expect some deaths."
Why most people who now die with Covid in England have had a vaccination | David Spiegelhalter and Anthony Masters

Do you which vaccines these are?? Moderna, Pfizer or AstraZeneca? or some other ones?

How very tragic.

It is tragic and at this time there is no information and I don't anticipate we will get much more information even when they determine the cause of death- although I would hope they would follow up and publish the cause of death and if in fact his death is related to the vaccine ( I think it is-)

I think so, too, especially if what the doctors told the family is correct, that the child had an enlarged heart. Prayers for the family.

Missouri. I believe that is one of the states that is said to be hugely unvaccinated.

Missouri is becoming a cautionary tale for the rest of the country: It is seeing an alarming rise in cases because of a combination of the fast-spreading delta variant and stubborn resistance among many people to getting vaccinated.

Intensive care beds are filling up with surprisingly young, unvaccinated patients, and staff members are getting burned out fighting a battle that was supposed to be in its final throes.

.... said Erik Frederick, chief administrative officer at Mercy Hospital Springfield, “We will be the canary.”

The current state of Covid-19 in the United States, in 5 charts (nbcnews.com)

Life is starting to feel normal, but Covid-19 is still with us.

After more than a year of pandemic-related lockdowns, social distancing and masking, life is feeling much more normal as Americans get ready to celebrate Independence Day. But Covid-19 still looms large.

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the "hypertransmissible” delta variant could have caused the recent 10 percent increase in new Covid-19 cases in the country. The news comes as states have largely abandoned mask mandates and reopened their economies, and as several states trail on vaccinations. The CDC said the country’s lagging vaccination rate, which is likely to miss President Joe Biden’s July 4 goal of getting at least one shot into the arms of 70 percent of adults, has contributed to the uptick in cases.

Slowing vaccinations, increased cases and a fast-spreading variant are among the factors at play as the country heads into a holiday weekend.

Here’s a quick look at the current state of the pandemic in the United States...

National Cabinet met twice this week. The first time to address what is currently happening with the Delta variant. The second time to introduce a proposed four phase plan.
We are in phase one now, and I think I heard that phase one will likely continue until mid-2022.

But premiers and chief ministers have agreed only in principle and will not finalise their position until they see advice from scientists in the next few weeks on the vaccination rate needed to open borders.

The number of people entering Australia through state hotel quarantine systems will drop from 6070 to 3035 per week.

Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said the Delta variant was “definitely more transmissible” but not more severe than other strains.

The national plan includes a trial of seven-day home quarantine as an alternative to 14 days in hotel rooms, with South Australia testing the idea.

Mr HKP has a question @SouthAussie. We knew someone who lived here but whose family were back in Aus. Would they be able to return home to visit the family, say if the mum was ill?

Yes, I think so. But they can't circumvent quarantine. We hear of people entering and leaving the country due to compassionate reasons. I would imagine that they have to seek special permission and show the appropriate verifying documentation.

Thank you for sharing that! It offers some relief.

It looks as though lockdowns are a last resort in Phase 1. It seems (to me) as though vaccines are still the answer. If they are planning for Phase 1 to last into 2022, does that mean they're not expecting the majority to be vaccinated?
