It looks as though lockdowns are a last resort in Phase 1. It seems (to me) as though vaccines are still the answer. If they are planning for Phase 1 to last into 2022, does that mean they're not expecting the majority to be vaccinated?

It is the vaccination supply issue.

Simon Birmingham on Thursday said Australia has had supply challenges “because European countries and drug companies have favoured those nations who’ve had high rates of Covid for the delivery of vaccines like Pfizer”.

“Which has put countries like New Zealand and Australia at the back of the queue in terms of receipt of some of those vaccines,” Birmingham said.

“But they’re coming.”

I surely wish that people would not act like covid is gone. As much as I want it to be- a horrid memory,
The lack of the vaccinated in the world is very concerning to me.
So very tired of this.

Unvaccinated people are 'variant factories,' infectious diseases expert says - CNN

Unvaccinated people do more than merely risk their own health. They're also a risk to everyone if they become infected with coronavirus, infectious disease specialists say.

That's because the only source of new coronavirus variants is the body of an infected person.

"Unvaccinated people are potential variant factories," Dr. William Schaffner, a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN Friday.

"The more unvaccinated people there are, the more opportunities for the virus to multiply," Schaffner said.
<snip>

Every time we see the virus circulating in the population, particularly a population that has pockets of immune people, vaccinated people, and pockets of unvaccinated people, you have a situation where the virus can probe," Pekosz said.

If a virus tries to infect someone with immunity, it may fail, or it may succeed and cause a mild or asymptomatic infection. In that case, it will replicate in response to the pressure from a primed immune system.

Like a bank robber whose picture is on wanted posters everywhere, the virus that succeeds will be the virus that makes a random change that makes it look less visible to the immune system.

Those populations of unvaccinated people give the virus the change not only to spread, but to change.
"All it takes is one mutation in one person," s
aid Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician and immunologist at Boston College.

Kali, I have an opportunity to visit California this week - I am vaccinated and I've not ever been sick - you seem to discourage people from visiting? My niece is doing the swim from Island to Island (Alcatraz) and I guess your post alarms me as to whether it's worse in California than everywhere else I've traveled to in the past few months.

COVID cases up more than 20% in Bay Area, California since June 15 reopening

You might want to check the city/county dashboard for whatever area you’re planning to visit?

I am only traveling to places that I have to go, no pleasure trips yet. Maybe this fall to a place with high vaccination percentages.

I feel safe in airports and on the plane because of the mask mandate, but I worry about the Delta variant.

Instead of decreasing - the cases are increasing again.

I agree, @KALI. And your opinion carries a lot of weight because I know it would be to your financial advantage at your restaurant if everyone acts like Covid is gone!

I’m not @KALI, but I get the sense that she is talking about the fact that the many unvaccinated parts of the world…not just California…should give us pause about visiting and resuming normal activities as if Covid is a thing of the past. The dangerous variants now dominate.

The UK has become the first nation in the world to plan a third round of COVID-19 vaccinations for vulnerable Britons, with a booster program that would shore up resistance to the virus ahead of winter.

Preparations to roll out the vaccine to elderly populations from September are awaiting final medical advice, but the move marks a step in the global vaccine race as the UK turns its attention towards providing ongoing resistance to COVID-19 and new variants.

World snapshot ..... for anyone who is interested.

Russia reported its fifth record for daily Covid-19 deaths in a row on Saturday, as countries around the world rush to contain the rapid spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

Indonesia imposed a partial lockdown on Saturday, a day after reporting more than 25,000 cases and 539 deaths, both new daily records.

Myanmar ordered two million people in the second city of Mandalay to stay at home Friday as the coup-hit country struggles to contain coronavirus cases.

Saint Petersburg (Russia) hosted a Euro 2020 quarter-final between Spain and Switzerland on Friday night, with concern raised after hundreds of cases were detected among spectators attending games across the continent.

Iran, battling the Middle East's deadliest outbreak of the coronavirus, has warned it could be about to be hit by yet another wave of infections. "It is feared that we are on the way to a fifth wave throughout the country"

Fiji, which went an entire year without recording any community coronavirus cases until Delta arrived in April, recorded its biggest-ever infection increase on Saturday.

Africa has also been largely spared the worst of the pandemic, but infection numbers have increased in the continent for six weeks running, driven by the Delta variant. Deaths rose by 15 percent in the same period."We are indeed... in the eye of the storm of the third wave"

Germany has issued what appears to be the strongest recommendation anywhere for the mixing of Covid-19 vaccines on efficacy grounds.

" .... people who receive a first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine "should get an mRNA vaccine as their second dose, regardless of their age."

STIKO said that "current study results" show that the immune response generated after a mixed dose vaccination "is clearly superior."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07/03/covid-july-4-delta/

This article is behind a paywall- perhaps it is somewhere else on the net- it is very discouraging that so many Americans seem to think the pandemic is over and they can party down without consequences.

The messaging surrounding covid has been poor from day one, and it's not improving. Even though the WHO still recommends masks and social distancing, our own CDC decided mask rules could be lifted and an honor system would be the best way to go. States and counties quickly followed suit and lifted their mandates.

Here we are at July 4, and people are planning big celebrations, seemingly unaware that Delta is moving quickly.

The White House is sending out "Surge Response Teams" that are designed to help out with hotspots where Delta flares up. That can be considered "cleanup on aisle 5" but it does nothing to reduce the actual spread. It's a band-aid on a severed limb.

Perhaps most of the current vaccines will protect us against the Delta variant, but what about the next mutation? And, the next? We're playing fast and loose with a whole lot of lives here. JMOO

Olympics, parades, parties, huge celebrations, sports, are all happening and no one is masking.

Ted Cruz joins forces with other GOP lawmakers to call for an end to mask mandates for vaccinated travelers, ahead of Independence Day
June 26, 2021

Ted Cruz, Susan Collins, and other senators file bill to end mask mandates on airlines

“U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced a Senate resolution this week calling on the Biden Administration’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to end its mask mandate for fully vaccinated individuals on public transportation throughout the United States-including at airports, on commercial airplanes, on buses, and rail systems.

“Over 150 million people in the United States are fully vaccinated and mask mandates have been lifted across the country. But the CDC inexplicably still hasn’t lifted the mask mandate for public transportation. It’s long past time for President Biden and the CDC to follow the science and end this mask mandate for fully vaccinated individuals. Americans should be able to travel to celebrate Independence Day with their friends and loved ones without having to follow an outdated and unnecessary mandate,” Cruz said.”

Gov. DeSantis downplays delta variant as CDC raises concern
June 15
https://www.wptv.com/news/state/des...ht-delta-variant-critics-call-for-more-effort

“'There's been a lot of talk about variants leading up to this,' DeSantis says. 'I think it gets put out there in ways designed to frighten people.'”

He must just say whatever he thinks the people want to hear. What a sad thing that he cannot come forward as a strong leader in the fight against Covid. The tragic number of deaths, the people and their stories don't matter to him. He seems bent on hiding the truth.

Does anyone know his background? He talks like he has no more than a grade 6 education.

I have come to the conclusion that many unvaccinated people simply don't care about infecting others-- and are in denial about their ability to contract the virus themselves. If people continue to pretend the virus is gone, as a country we will continue to perpetuate this evil virus for years- and that doesn't even take into consideration all the people around the world who are not vaccinated because of lack of access.

I hear ya!!! the media is partly responsible for this state of denial. Just watch the news, local and national, talking about all the activities for the fourth of July and how , isn't it great we have our freedom back, and then oh yeah, they spend two seconds talking about the Delta variant---and back to showing all the crowds gathering for the 4th!!!! It makes me crazy!!!!

I agree. We hardly ever have to wear masks here, when we have no infections. But we always have to wear them, at all times, in the airports and on planes. No matter what our country's covid status is.

Governor DeSantis is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. He also served as a JAG officer in the Navy, I believe. The MSM article appears to be strongly biased against him, written from a certain political perspective, a certain narrative. Not everyone agrees on their views of his leadership of the state, and the Covid pandemic.

Nope. Sorry, you were reading into my words. I wouldn't worry about visiting California. It's a huge place. I have no knowledge of outbreaks anywhere. You just should look into the stats for wherever you are going. I'm sure you'll be fine. I was referencing in generalities. Not specifically California.
