Delta variant confirmed in samples from League City church group COVID outbreak after summer camp

“Unfortunately, upon return from camp, 125+ campers and adults reported to us that they tested positive for COVID-19," church officials said in a statement. "Additionally, hundreds more were exposed to COVID-19 at camp. And hundreds of others were likely exposed when infected people returned home from camp.”

“Galveston County Health District officials said Friday they were investigating the outbreak at the five-day event that was attended by around 450 adults and children in sixth through 12th grades. The first case was reported to them on June 27.”

Church camp COVID-19 outbreak should serve as 'cautionary tale,' Galveston Co. health official says | khou.com

“From the beginning of the pandemic, we have sought to love our neighbors by practicing strict safety protocols. We are surprised and saddened by this turn of events. Our hearts break for those infected with the virus. Please pray for a speedy and complete recovery for all of those affected.

Grace and Peace,

Bruce Wesley”

Huh? Strict safety protocols?

Unsafe protocols have been normalized in some states so that people like Bruce Wesley think their unsafe practices are fine. Then suddenly hundreds of people have Covid, and the organizers have no idea how that could have happened.

Covid-19 Australia: New York Times takes aim at Australia's bungled vaccine rollout | Daily Mail Online

"The New York Times has taken aim at Australia's low vaccination rates by using the country's bungled vaccine rollout as an example of how not to manage Covid-19.

That's a bit rich coming from a country that has had over 606,000 covid deaths, isn't it?
And continued covid deaths on a daily basis.
As well as a western world that has hung onto their Pfizer vaccines because they were in much worse shape than a country that tried their hardest.

Nothing like a little hypocrisy.

Yesterday, we had zero new cases of covid in every state - except 1 new case in Qld and 23 new cases in NSW. The only place that is "locked down" is specific areas of NSW ... for obvious reasons.

************************

ETA: I just read the actual NY Times article. It is not written in the vein that the DM has portrayed (which omits pertinent facts). For example, I notice that the DM has neglected to mention ....
"The good news is that Australia (at the state level) has become extremely sharp when it comes to outbreak management. I was able to get tested late Wednesday night in a suburb of Canberra, and my negative result arrived a few hours later with a text message at 3:07 a.m.
In Sydney, my wife’s visit to a busy pop-up clinic had her in and out in record time."
"What I immediately thought (but did not say) was that I could have had a shot sooner. I’d given up my spot (which would have made me fully vaccinated by now) for the same reason I was talking to Andrew: I wanted to do my part, to keep the system fair, to serve that same collective spirit that made Australia do so well with Covid’s first phase."

.... and other positive comments.

Agreed ... I researched a bit about their church, last night. It seems that their strict protocols involved having only online services for a while. They still have online services on offer, along with in person services.

That's certainly something commendable that they are doing to help keep people safe, but it's a wider issue than just the church. Galveston's public health guidelines seem non-existent. And we know that vaccination rates in the southern US are far too low and ongoing cases are too high to allow for 5-day camps with 450 people. It was a planned disaster, imo. Of course there are now hundreds of new cases of covid.

It's frustrating because by now, leaders should have figured this out.

Flight to Bahamas canceled when airline says Winthrop teens refused to wear masks
Much More at link
A group of Winthrop high school graduates are being blamed for canceling an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to the Bahamas because they reportedly refused to wear masks.

“Prior to departure on July 5, passengers traveling on American Airlines Flight 893 from Charlotte (CLT) to Nassau, Bahamas (NAS) were reported to be noncompliant with the federal mask mandate, became disruptive to other customers and refused to follow crew member instructions while onboard,” American Airlines said in a statement.
So instead of having the teenagers disembark the plane - they cancelled the flight for everyone.

The flight attendants and pilots make it VERY clear that rowdy behavior because of the mask mandate will not be tolerated.
“I will put this bird down at the first available airport and you will be removed” says the captain....

HEY! We did a great job. And we're All on board with this vaccination thing. Steamrolling through 50% fully vaccinated, with 75% herd immunity right around the corner. We'll probably be there by September.

2022. But that's besides the point. You Australians aren't perfect and it's the responsibility of highly intellectual publications like DM to point that out. So there!

FAA will look into American Airlines flight delayed by mask mandate noncompliance — CNN

“Winer said the passengers of flight 893 bound for the Bahamas sat on the aircraft in Charlotte for about two hours awaiting resolution of a mechanical issue with the flight, and "during this time some passengers including the students may have removed masks due to no air-conditioning/ventilation, quite unbearable conditions."

It’s unfortunate there was a mechanical issue. But you know you have to wear a mask on the plane. Travel disruptions happen often - ESPECIALLY during this holiday week. It’s been in news every day to be prepared for this type of thing.
Taking it off to sip your water occasionally is not the issue.

Doc T says the world is at a perilous point in the pandemic, as fast-moving variants continue to spread because of an uneven global vaccination effort:

WHO Chief Says World at Perilous Point in COVID-19 Pandemic

“But the WHO chief said that because of what he called a “shocking inequity in vaccination,” and highly contagious variants of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, far too many countries in every region of the world were seeing spikes in cases and hospitalizations.

He said that had led to an acute shortage of oxygen and treatments and was driving a wave of death in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Tedros said around the world, variants were winning the race against vaccines because of inequitable vaccine production and distribution, which, he said, also threatened the global economic recovery.”

I watched this conference this morning and it was intense to hear Doc T speaking about all this:

New Lancet article .....

We reaffirm our expression of solidarity with those in China who confronted the outbreak then, and the many health professionals around the world who have since worked to exhaustion, and at personal risk, in the relentless and continuing battle against this virus.

The critical question we must address now is, how did SARS-CoV-2 reach the human population?

We believe the strongest clue from new, credible, and peer-reviewed evidence in the scientific literature is that the virus evolved in nature
(references linking the evidence provided in this article)

Allegations and conjecture are of no help, as they do not facilitate access to information and objective assessment of the pathway from a bat virus to a human pathogen that might help to prevent a future pandemic.

Recrimination has not, and will not, encourage international cooperation and collaboration.

New viruses can emerge anywhere, so maintaining transparency and cooperation between scientists everywhere provides an essential early warning system.

It is time to turn down the heat of the rhetoric and turn up the light of scientific inquiry if we are to be better prepared to stem the next pandemic, whenever it comes and wherever it begins.

Science, not speculation, is essential

Spectators to face Olympic ban as Tokyo declares coronavirus emergency (nbcnews.com)

The ban is the latest blow to the troubled Olympics, already delayed by a year because of the pandemic.

TOKYO —The Tokyo Olympics will take place without spectators, organizers said on Thursday, as a resurgent pandemic forced Japan to declare a coronavirus state of emergency for the capital that will run throughout the event.

It was the latest blow to the troubled Olympics, already delayed by a year because of the pandemic and plagued by a series of setbacks, including massive budget overruns...

Japan to declare virus emergency lasting through Olympics (detroitnews.com)

TokyoJapan is set to place Tokyo under a state of emergency that would last through the Olympics, fearing an ongoing COVID-19 surge will multiply during the Games.

At a meeting with experts Thursday morning, government officials proposed a plan to issue a state of emergency in Tokyo from next Monday to Aug. 22. The Summer Olympics, already delayed a year by the pandemic, begin July 23 and close Aug. 8.

The Games already will take place without foreign spectators, but the planned six-week state of emergency likely ends chances of a local audience. A decision about fans is expected later Thursday when local organizers meet with the International Olympic Committee and other representatives...

The DailyMail likes to use sensationalism and clickbait.

If Australia has experienced a slow vaccine rollout, maybe it's because vaccines they tried to order didn't show up.

I'm not all that impressed by a second Daszak letter to the Lancet. At least not after what we found out about the first one.

I noticed that this latest letter has fewer signatories than the first one, which prompted me to find out why.

I didn't do a lot of research, but I find this:

"Peter Palese, the virologist who wrote about the 1977 flu pandemic, said that “a lot of disturbing information has surfaced since The Lancet letter I signed” and that he wants an investigation to come up with answers.

Other scientists have also said they have changed their minds.

Ian Lipkin, the director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University and a co-author of an influential article in Nature Medicine that argued in favor of a natural origin in March 2020, is also now more skeptical. “People should not be looking at bat viruses in BSL-2 labs,” he told the science reporter Donald G. McNeil Jr. last month. “My view has changed.”
Opinion | Where Did the Coronavirus Come From? What We Already Know Is Troubling.

I was relieved to read that Daszak is now off the WHO Investigative Committee. He never should have been on it.

I really hope Covid is found to be zoonotic, because that would ease a lot of angst. But, it's a sad thing that we have some scientists recruiting other scientists in an effort to control a narrative. It damages the public's faith in science as a whole, and that's not fair to the vast majority of scientists who don't have an agenda.
